i get by with a shirt jacket for like 10 months of the year.

this from norse projects is mine

http://fashionstealer.com/PICTURES/STEALS/norse%20projects/norse_projects_bjorn_wool_shirt.jpg

but they don't make it any more and it is sort of dying via backpack wear after ~1yr

recommend me shirt jackets

filson. allegedly hard wearing.

woolrich do a few and they are cheap (and currently mostly out of stock)

Love these. Total art teacher-wear, hides my body, has pockets, can turn the collars up in a pinch. Best item ever along with long-line V-neck cardigans.

excellent for air travel!

caek, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link

At least one of my 3-season coats is actually one of these. Very tailored, 4 front pockets, one with flap. I want an identical one that's lined, could keep it another 20 years.

i kind of like this, although it is a bit more jackety than i am looking for

caek, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

Let's buy the same jacket.

grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

Then I'll find the perfect winter oxfords (to replace my half-linen ones I'm currently stretching past their fall expiration date) and we'll both look just like max.

grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

i got mine via a tip from max iirc

caek, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

i even had it repaired in fort greene, which i think means i became max

Whoah idk what happened to llbean models but ws each and every shirted one.

grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

They're mostly the same guy so that's not completely outrageous.

i am seriously tempted by that ridiculous houndstooth jacket but i am not sure i can pull it off

i would pay cash money for it right now if it came in like navy or green or charcoal or something sane

caek, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:39 (eleven years ago) link

will probably just get a filson in navy (being boring)

caek, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

and i will no doubt rue the lack of hip pockets

caek, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

I require hand-area pockets. Prefer full-on patch pockets to those diagonal slashed ones but require SOMETHING.

grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

otm

caek, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

the norse projects hip pockets are exactly 1 kindle in size

caek, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

I just asked for the houndstooth one for Christmas since I can't find anyone stocking the Corcoran field boots that I actually need.

Goal until spring: dress like a paramilitary lumberjack.

grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:46 (eleven years ago) link

these usually seem to be more expensive than any shirt OR jacket I would buy, yet not as warm as an actual jacket

drunk 'n' white's elements of style (Hurting 2), Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:46 (eleven years ago) link

Most winter coats are way too warm for me in the body, I just need sleeves and neck/ears to be covered.

grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:49 (eleven years ago) link

I ADORE the look of fitted formal coats on men and women both but I give up on wearing them--I beat the shit out of 'em carrying shoulder bags and swinging my arms and sweating in them, and I am ALWAYS sweating if I have to walk more than a couple of blocks. Ideally would want a winter coat with zipper vents under the arms and in the middle of the back. Will settle for houndstooth.

grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:51 (eleven years ago) link

I had a beautiful cross between a striped button down and a jeans jacket presumably from the mid 60s. I boughty it around '85 and lost it on my interail trip. Shame always wanted another one like it but have never to my kknowledge seen one.

Stevolende, Friday, 30 November 2012 08:58 (eleven years ago) link

I emailed my mom that houndstooth jkt for my Christmas list and she had just bought that exact one...for my brother. Now she's getting us the same thing.

grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Saturday, 1 December 2012 21:26 (eleven years ago) link

Would really like to find out more about that button down collar jacket thing I had in the mid 80s. I got around to googling it over the week but didn't have any luck. Looked like it came out of a '66 mod/freakbeat photoshoot. So I wonder if there were many of them made or if it was a short-term fad out of Carnaby street, Lord John or something.

caek, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

i kinda prefer sweater jackets to shirt jackets cuz i find them warmer and idk cozier i guess, i like the extra bulk of a sweater but i do have one shirt jacket:

http://www.selectism.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/wings-horns-melton-wool-shirt-00.jpg

that i like a fair bit

f (Lamp), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 17:26 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i got a navy one like that by woolrich wm

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 17:42 (eleven years ago) link

CPO or cruiser jacket, right?

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 17:42 (eleven years ago) link

i think the cruiser coat is a little longer and has more pockets. thats supposed to be a 'hunting shirt' iirc.

i have been eyeing up the wwm flight jackets in blue tho. i kinda like the trend of making really heavy fitted blazer jackets like that, theres a nice boo two button tweed blazer jacket thats (unsurprisingly) steeply marked-down in my size that i want/have on my mental xmas wish list

f (Lamp), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 00:22 (eleven years ago) link

I have been into things that are definitely shirt-jackety of late

although I don't think that they integrate well with my other jacket interest that I discovered a couple years ago: the napoleon pocket

shirt jackets still on my mind.

lag∞n, Friday, 1 October 2021 15:10 (two years ago) link

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Friday, 1 October 2021 15:13 (two years ago) link

i own a shirt jacket without hand pockets and every time i wear it rediscover the idea of having a tailor put hand pockets in it

lag∞n, Friday, 1 October 2021 15:34 (two years ago) link

tho the shirt jacket depicted on aigle dot com is way on the shirt end of the shirt jacket spectrum so maybe you could wear it more like a shirt and it wouldnt be a problem

lag∞n, Friday, 1 October 2021 15:36 (two years ago) link

yeah. i ended up there because i wanted to show you guys an aigle SHACKET yes i said it again lag∞n that i actually have, which is really one of my most treasured things now. it's got the side pockets and it's slightly quilted. god it's the best. the only slight downside is that the quilting can feel a little COLD on bare arms if you're wearing it that way but i just steel myself for it because i know it'll pass in about half a minute.

thanks! the socks were a christmas present - my parents know i love socks - with a ridiculously cute conceit - they come in a pack of two, one adult size and one kid size for your kid awwwww.

the side seam pockets are very comfortable, in fact i forget they're there. i don't usually like to keep big stuff in there for very long but it's extremely handy in, say, sniffle season

xpost

Tracer Hand, Friday, 1 October 2021 16:48 (two years ago) link

it just seems like kind of far to reach back to put your hands in, tho i know its not a totally uncommon placement

lag∞n, Friday, 1 October 2021 16:52 (two years ago) link

yeah i guess you just get used to it. there is a stealth element that is not unpleasing

Tracer Hand, Friday, 1 October 2021 16:57 (two years ago) link

I like a slashed diagonal welted pocket myself but I acknowledge I'm particular. Or large patch pockets on the front, but that has something of an "art teacher/olde worlde craftperson" vibe. Which I'm also fine with.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Friday, 1 October 2021 16:59 (two years ago) link

yeah i would prefer having some sort of further forward than the seam pocket were i to get my jacket altered, which im almost certainly not going to lol, but pockets on the seams seems like the easiest operation considering the jacket is all one fabric and theres not more of it

lag∞n, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:05 (two years ago) link

its a nice jacket but its unlined wool which is scratchy also i own many light jackets sweatshirts fleeces and various things to keep me warm in the cold but not that cold weather

lag∞n, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:07 (two years ago) link

a few years ago my wife got me a stitchfix gift card thing as a birthday present. it was an interesting experience having clothes show up at my doorstep. they mostly look really good, but some of them revealed themselves to be shoddy quality over time (jeans esp). but i did get this nift shacket:

https://d3n78nkjl8tizo.cloudfront.net/stitch-fix/image/upload/c_scale,w_1000/e_replace_color:f2f3f4:300:ffffff/f_auto,q_auto/v1537306226/pv6fo0ulaqf4sxhbrlg4.jpg

love it, and this is the perfect season. wearing it almost daily

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:12 (two years ago) link

that looks pretty sweet. i guess those are the pockets of your dreams cr?m?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

That's sooo good. And Tracer, yours too! Top shacket marks for secured top pockets, open side pockets for standing around with your hands in.

Timely. Thinking about overshirts & shackets today.

Looking at the Wax Whiting, as mentioned by Moodles upthread:

https://waxlondon.com/products/whiting-overshirt-marine-beatnik

(no handpockets so feels slightly off-thread, though I wear heavy shirts as jackets plenty)

or a Form&thread atelier in ink, a purer shacket

What one

woof, Saturday, 12 March 2022 11:27 (two years ago) link

I had this great garment I bought in the 2nd hand clothing shop in Clapham that was like a button down shirt at the collar and had a bottom that seemed a lot more like a jeans jacket, I don't think I've ever seen another like it. Have thought of trying to create something more like it. Think it was pretty light but that bottom was weird for a shirt. Including the side jacket waist adjustment tabs you get on the back of jeans jackets and a waist band strip so I don't think it would tuck into trousers easily. Fabric a lot more shirtish than external jacket .

Unfortunately it was in a bag that I lost while interailing in mid 85. So can't check to see if it had labels or anything, whether it was a mass made thing or more bespoke or smaller boutique level numbers of production.
