ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Actor Whitman Mayo, best known for his role as Grady on the 1970s hit television show "Sanford and Son," died Tuesday in Atlanta of a heart attack. He was 70.

Mayo had been hospitalized for the last two months due to a hernia, a spokeswoman for the family said. He died at 5:15 a.m. as he was being transported from one hospital to another.

Mayo worked in the television and film industry for more than 30 years. He gained fame as the affable character Grady Wilson on "Sanford and Son," known for his trademark expression: "Good goobily goop!"

Most recently, Whitman hosted Turner South's original weekly series "Liars & Legends" and was an adjunct professor at Clark Atlanta University instructing a film/theater class.

"Turner South is deeply saddened by the death of Whitman Mayo," said David Rudolph, vice president and general manager of Turner South, a division of AOL Time Warner, which also owns CNN.

Among Whitman's TV credits are "Diff'rent Strokes," "In the Heat of the Night," "Trapper John, M.D." and "The Cape." Whitman's film credits include John Singleton's "Boyz in the Hood," "The Main Event" with Barbra Streisand and the 1999 "Waterproof" with Burt Reynolds.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Gail Reid Mayo, and three grown children.

grady,

how are you splitting your six votes for the best thread poll? all six to 'so not gonna happen' or will oink invites take a vote? also, how was prins thomas?

jergïns, Thursday, 13 September 2007 22:02 (sixteen years ago) link

i will only vote once.

PT was fun but suffered from some misdirected promotion. Also, it was a really bad week for me so i couldnt hang too long. Word from my friends was he didnt stop playing records till 10am though!

It was cool to meet him. He's a very nice guy and a family man too.

what's thirtyninehotel like?

jergïns, Monday, 17 September 2007 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link

i only walked through once, but kind of a lightly renovated space with exposed brick. more office sized than warehouse. was there an outdoors with some chairs? i believe. with a hawaii stoner art vibe. its on the second level. and Hotel Street is famous for prostitution and meth, but has been undergoing a bit of a revival.

grady, feel free to swoop in and tell me i stay trippin

Confounded, Monday, 17 September 2007 18:47 (sixteen years ago) link

its been re-modeled since Conrad last saw it. its much more of a lounge/ gallery environment than the art/ performance/ BYOB place it began as.

the outdoor area has a permanent bar now and a raised deck area. they do kabobs during happy hour now, too.

the indoor area is only slightly larger than the outdoor area and is almost completely white, as it still serves as a gallery. at night, the only lights focus on the disco ball.

just this weekend saw the unveiling of four Klipschorn speakers and two amps that originally served in Mancuso's Loft in the 70's.

thirtyninehotel.com (kind of under construction now)

oh yeah, jergs - also this

how long do you think you'll live in hawaii? would it be a job or lifestyle-related decision? are you going to daft punk in vegas? (me, no)

any L O S T gossip?

jergïns, Saturday, 6 October 2007 05:41 (sixteen years ago) link

how long do you think you'll live in hawaii? would it be a job or lifestyle-related decision?

hard to say. at the most, another three years. i'd like to live in a new city by that time. but i'm open to that changing.

are you going to daft punk in vegas?

barring a last minute impulse, no.

any L O S T gossip?

no. i was drunk a few weekends ago and pressed a guy i know who is on the crew for some insider info, but all he'd give me was a cop-out: "jack and kate get off the island." i think letting on how huge a LOST nerd i am made him think twice about introducing me to E.L.-in-disguise.

:/

i passed shooting locations a few times in the last week or so. i cant remember what generic project name they are using on the signs, but i recognized it (and the same enormous security guard) after seeing it twice. i work on the north shore now, and pass a lot of past locations on my commute.

grady, is it acceptable for a gentleman to where a white linen suit to a wedding in september in northern europe?

caek, Thursday, 1 September 2011 10:25 (twelve years ago) link

where "where" = "wear"

caek, Thursday, 1 September 2011 10:25 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know.

 (gr8080), Thursday, 1 September 2011 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

for real though i think when it comes to dos & donts with wedding attire, it comes down to what the bride and groom are like, what they've communicated about their wedding plans/any theme, and what your circle of friends/family is like, more than any Ms Manners book of rules.
