let's release the U2 album before U2 releases the U2 album

inspired by the frankly awesome tracklisting of the new U2 album, "there is no line on the horizon":

01 No Line on the Horizon
02 Magnificent
03 Moment of Surrender
04 Unknown Caller
05 I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
06 Get on Your Boots
07 Stand Up Comedy
08 Fez - Being Born
09 White as Snow
10 Breathe
11 Cedars of Lebanon

it would be awesome if various music people on this board would each claim one of these song titles, then write and record a song with that title, then put a link to it on this board. the songs don't have to sound like U2 or have anything to do with U2 at all. the u2 album comes out march 3, if we could get this all done before then, it would be awesome. anyone interested?

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 19 January 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I couldn't care less about u2 but this might be fun.
hum...which one to pick... I'll go with "crazy".
can there be several versions of each track or does it have to be one and only one of each ?

AleXTC, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago) link

ideally the later, unless more than 11 people want to contribute, in which case we'll figure something out

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 19 January 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

fucking great idea

Mr. Que, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i would like to use "stand up comedy" as i have a lot to say on the subject but will give it up if it encourages more people to contribute

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 19 January 2009 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link

you should have a breakdown in the middle of the song where you do actual stand up comedy

Mr. Que, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:20 (fifteen years ago) link

fine. I already have some ideas rolling... if I don't go for some drinks after work or get too lazy once at home, I'll start it tonight !

AleXTC, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I'll go crazy if i don't go crazy tonight practically writes itself

Mr. Que, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:20 (fifteen years ago) link

ahah, well you could always keep an option on it until someone else REALLY wants to do it.

AleXTC, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

basically all of these titles conjure up country songs in my head

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 19 January 2009 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, "crazy" is pretty evocative... but I'll try to add some... craziness !

AleXTC, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I'll take "Fez - Being Born"

TOMBOT, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I would like to take "Get On Your Boots", if that's alright with everyone?

snoball, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:26 (fifteen years ago) link

well, I think it's first come first served so go ahead !

ok, I've made the basic demo for "crazy" last night. now I just have to re-record everything properly (I was a bit too drunk to make decent takes...).
It should be ready far before the dead line.
now i'm pretty curious to hear what U2's track is like... it was a trick to make us listen to their new album !

AleXTC, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 09:53 (fifteen years ago) link

(xpost) Jordan, are you claiming "Get On Your Boots", because I thought I already called dibs on that?

snoball, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 10:45 (fifteen years ago) link

BTW I've already written the lyrics and have a rough arrangement for my version

snoball, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 10:46 (fifteen years ago) link

so, so far we have 5 out of 10 tracks. we need more people to work on this great project !

AleXTC, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 11:20 (fifteen years ago) link

huh, 11, sorry...

AleXTC, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 11:20 (fifteen years ago) link

BTW is anyone keeping a list of who's doing which track?

cedars of lebanon has to be on the slower end of mid-tempo and has to reference palestine, israel, and the 1972 olympiad.

i found a rolling stone article with 'previews' of these songs, but i wouldn't want to influence anyone.

except some of them are pretty funny:

"No Line on the Horizon"
The title track's relentless groove began as a group improvisation. "It's very raw and very to the point," says the Edge. "It's like rock & roll 2009."

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:29 (fifteen years ago) link

"Magnificent"
"Only love can leave such a mark," Bono roars on what sounds like an instant U2 anthem. Will.i.am has already done what Bono calls "the most extraordinary" remix of the tune.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

"The Most Extraordinary Remix" would be a good name for a song

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

i listened to "get on your boots"; it actually wasn't that bad, though i don't know what i was expecting given that i haven't actively listened to a u2 album since zooropa

'unknown caller' preview, jordan ? xp

6335, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

pretty hard to top:

"Unknown Caller"
This midtempo track could have fit on All That You Can't Leave Behind. "The idea is that the narrator is in an altered state, and his phone starts talking to him," says the Edge.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

6335, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link

ok these are my lyrics i wrote in 3 minutes inna u2 stylee, if anyone wants em go ahead

This wood
Burn it for the new year
Look at the trees
From where this wood came
Name of a hospital
The place where Marley died
A grove holding such significance
For people unlike us
People just like you and I (do you see?)

The cedars
cedars of Lebanon
The trees which live
On and on and on

Battles are fought
Over this sacred land
Shattering the the innocents
With weapons from a misled hand
The distant past
cries over the sad present
This war we fight
Is not at all pleasant
For all who win will lose (do you seeeee?)

The cedars
cedars of Lebanon
The trees which live
On and on and on
and on and ONNNNNN, edge GO

SINGLE STRING GUITAR SOLO

Black and white
brown and yellowwwww
red and blue
we are all one
under the sun
under the CEDARS
CEDARS OF LEBANON
and yes they go
ON AND ON
(forever)

I'm waiting for the sun
to RISE
I'm waiting for the ONE
to re-rise
I see the trees bend
over for you and me
I see the world end
if we are not all FREE

LISTEN TO THE CEDARS
oh yes
listen to them CRY
watch as they TRY
to make themselves heard
to us the human herd.

Yeah I didn't mean just U2, like I dunno, the new album by a big act that sucks and deserves the ilx treatment. Red Hot Chili Peppers for ilx2010?

Body Butter (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 17 January 2010 10:25 (fourteen years ago) link

That's a good call. RHCP are probably the only other band/artist that ILX cares about enough to want to do this. In an interview Chad said it would be coming out October 2010. It's a bit far off but OTOH we'll have more time to prepare. And if they release another double album (the previous one had 28 tracks) then more people can get involved.

an executive by day and a wild man by night (snoball), Sunday, 17 January 2010 10:49 (fourteen years ago) link

hum. it's a bit to far to be fun.
aren't there other big releases coming ?

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 18 January 2010 22:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Big list here:
http://www.metacritic.com/music/upcomingreleases.shtml

The only one that sort-of catches my eye that is going to be released soon is Goldfrapp (release scheduled for 23rd March). But there's no track listing yet. And they're not really in the same league as Bono in the "desperately needing a kick in the pants" department. But if people still want to have at U2, then "Songs of Ascent" is due for mid 2010 release. Recorded at the same time as "No Line..." just the title says that it's going to be full of ripe Bono-isms.

aah, too bad white stripes is only a live... interpol maybe ?
there will certainly be great titles to work with !

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 11:46 (fourteen years ago) link

interpol would be fun, everyone should just do their best ian crutis impression over a variety of backing tracks (ian crutis does super fruity swag rap; ian crutis reads poetry over steve reich's "clapping music"; ian crutis does broadway!)

thank u 4 being a fiend (m bison), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

ahah. sounds good ! but that would make it just a comedy project, wouldn't it ? (which somehow we managed to avoid with "no ilx").
I've just looked at their titles... there's some gold to expect !

yeah I know - and even if you weren't it was pretty damn funny - am gonna have to release a song by that name at some point

thing is when listening to it I was all 'wha...who uses the horn presets on keyboards' at first, then I was 'hang on, but this is pretty hypnotic', then I was 'hey the fact that someone has used the horn preset and then offset it with groovy syncopated bass is awesome' and finally by the synth solo I was convinced someone had hit on something really valuable

so yeah, if the Wire track manages a build-up half as epic as this it'll have been worth it tbh

hey thanks! I was pretty happy with the music; it's a little more "boring" (ie longer and fewer parts) than the songs I normally do but I feel like it's kind of a grower. I'm still not crazy about the vocals; I did the singing first and it didn't sound how I wanted it (my voice isn't low or weighty enough) so then I tried the robot vocals but it seemed kind of cheap so then I "compromised" and left both in when I probably should have just committed to one or the other.

I've probably linked this somewhere before but all the home recording stuff I do is at http://scarequotes.net.
