A noir, E blanc, I rouge, U vert, O bleu: voyelles,
Je dirai quelque jour vos naissances latentes:
A, noir corset velu des mouches éclatantes
Qui bombinent autour des puanteurs cruelles,

Golfes d'ombre; E, candeurs des vapeurs et des tentes,
Lances des glaciers fiers, rois blancs, frissons d'ombelles;
I, pourpres, sang craché, rire des lèvres belles
Dans la colère ou les ivresses pénitentes;

U, cycles, vibrements divins des mers virides,
Paix des pâtis semés d'animaux, paix des rides
Que l'alchimie imprime aux grands fronts studieux;

O, suprême Clairon plein des strideurs étranges,
Silences traversés des [Mondes et des Anges]:
—O l'Oméga, rayon violet de [Ses] Yeux!

I can't make out what you're driving at, M. White, in the majority of that alphabetical melange, but the poll seems straightforward enough. I see you neglected to add an option for all of the above. Pity.

However, seeing as ouzo, grappa and arak may be considered as 'white' under certain circumstances (ouzo, when adulterated with water turns milky, for example), I have voted for Synesthesia causes me to have conniption fits.

It is my constant policy to tell the truth, even when I am not placed under compulsion, as this tends to sow confusion among my enemies and friends alike. However, since the majority of my friends are hopelessly confused at all times, this is no objection.

It's from 'Rambo XI, Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Softer', Aimless.

In my experience, absinthe makes the tongue grow numb. This is utterly frustrating, as it makes ordering a second bottle all but impossible without resort to clumsy miming, made all the more clumsy by the handicap of being face down on the floor.

The only answer I've found to this intolerable dilemma is to have one's valet drinking nothing stronger than boilermakers, so as to be fresh and relaible when one needs assistance in reordering, and in manipulating the sugar cube. And lifting the glass. And swallowing.

(Sorry about the second comma. I know it's superfluous.)

Michael White, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 22:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I find a plenitude of commas to be the mark of a fecund mind, an inexhaustable breast capable of exuding a surplusage of milky sustenance for nourishing one's thought and a sense of intellectual satisfaction. Don't, you?

absdsolootyitue, lely,

(In my family, we weren't allowed to use words like 'fecund' until we'd moved out of the house.)

How niggardly of them!

Aimless, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 22:54 (fifteen years ago) link

They were rather suspicious of Shi'ites, too, though to my knowledge they'd never met a one.

Michael White, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 22:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I suppose they didn't let you drink anything but rose' wine, and not more than a bottle or two, either! You have my condolences.

Aimless, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 22:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I would have haled them before the assizes, if I'd been allowed.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

But, we've scarcely had time to think!

or drink, for that matter

I may have to close my eyes and point by way of selection, under this sort of pressure.

It was always the favourite, surely.
