the one thing i've always admired about jeter is he's so careful he's never once given two baskets to the same fuck

btw storms possible for nyc on thurs

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 21:00 (nine years ago) link

The weather forecast for New York City on Thursday calls for thunderstorms. Is it possible even God is trying to delay the inevitable?

"Oh, I don't know about that," laughed Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "If he really wanted to intervene maybe he'd take away a few wins from the Royals."

Kidding aside, it seems as if nature herself may step in this week to allow Jeter's successful final season to continue on for another 24 or even 48 hours.

"I'm kind of hoping that happens," admitted first baseman Mark Teixeira. "It gives DJ a little more time for a curtain call, and as long as we're still in it any extra rest we can get now is a bonus."

That's right. The Yankees still have a shot at this. The Yankees are the Yankees, and while they're far back of several other teams, those teams don't have the same end-of-season experience as this squad.

"This is a team that never quits," outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury stated, a player who left a sinking ship of quitters just in time to board a vessel destined for a playoff push. "We're just following his example."

The "his" is Derek Jeter. The example is second-to-none.

Jeter quite naturally downplays his own role in the Yankees' unexpectedly overachieving season.

"I've had some good hits land this season, but it's really the other guys who have picked us up on the occasions I've scuffled this year. Tex, Ichiro, CC, all of them."

Time for some rain to give us more time with the fearless leader. And hey, maybe Mr. November will shine in October once more. Don't doubt him for a second.

Jeetz DHing in what could be his last home game (monsoon due tomorrow)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

@TylerKepner
So the last game Jeter ever plays in New York, tomorrow night, will be the only one in his career in which the Yankees were eliminated.

Disastrous? Not seeing Clutch Over Replacement in their calculations. Sounds like these egghead schlubs can't even get a job at NASA firing rockets at North Korea, as weak as their math is. #FarewellCaptain

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Friday, 26 September 2014 02:41 (nine years ago) link

jeter was my childhood hero. not just my favorite athlete, but literally my hero: i owned several of his jerseys, read all his biographies, watched the yankees religiously, went to games as often as possible, etc. my computer passwords are still jeter-related.

life has gotten in the way of baseball fandom over the past several years, but a couple of months ago i told my mom i wanted to go to tonight's yankee game. after checking schedules with the rest of my family, she gets tickets for a DIFFERENT game. no big deal, i'm sure the mlb.com stream was just as great as being there in person

k3vin k., Friday, 26 September 2014 02:45 (nine years ago) link

(Of course that was incredible but) How many times will we see that replayed during the playoffs? 100?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 September 2014 04:43 (nine years ago) link

btw the NPR hourly news segment on this concluded "Jeter could play in the Bronx again if the team makes the playoffs." Your donations, well spent on research.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 26 September 2014 14:06 (nine years ago) link

"Broken bat, I got a run in, you know what I mean?" Jeter said. "But I've done that time and time again."

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 26 September 2014 14:07 (nine years ago) link

otoh, the Yankee fans can home and put their Giants shit on now

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 September 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link

If the Orioles win the WS it will be because Jeter blessed them as a postseason proxy for Yankees fans to root for.
