Collins hinted that he might use a lineup with the pitcher batting eighth, Juan Lagares ninth, and Curtis Granderson leading off.

Matt Harvey is 26 today. Getting a little too Namath-like off the field for socialists to love:

Adam Rubin:

The New York Mets addressed a left-handed relief void Monday, trading for Padres southpaw Alex Torres. Minor league right-hander Cory Mazzoni and a player to be named later are headed to San Diego.

The Mets again addressed that void later Monday in a trade with the Washington Nationals, acquiring left-handed reliever Jerry Blevins for outfielder Matt den Dekker.

Left-hander Sean Gilmartin, a Rule 5 pick from the Minnesota Twins, is likely to make the Opening Day roster even with the acquisition of Torres. He is not considered a lefty specialist, however.

RJ Anderson of BP on Lagares:

Every hitter is dependent to some degree on his batting average, but Lagares is reliant upon singles to an extreme extent; he's simply not going to be productive at the plate if he doesn't have a high average.

With that in mind, going year-to-year with Lagares would've been a sound play; the risk being that he wins another Gold Glove or two, posts a high average a couple more times, or employs an agent who convinces arbitrators that his client is the best defender on the planet. Ultimately, the money involved isn't enough to fret too much about it one way or another; however, it is a surprising and perhaps unnecessary investment for a franchise that, as of late, has been reluctant to spend.

<3 this guy btw

The Mets’ phenom, who spent a lot of time fishing and hunting growing up, still bears the scars of his days spent out in the hot Florida sun.

“I used to ride fawlers a whole bunch,” he says.

Fawlers?

“We would have tracks, fawlers and dirt bikes,” he says.

Ah, four-wheelers.

“We would build some pretty big jumps,” he reminisces, “The days I wasn’t playing, I would definitely ride.”

But before you have a heart attack, Fred Wilpon, know this. The kid is over fawlers.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea,” he says with a mischievous grin. “I had my fair share of getting injured.” Pulling up his pants legs, deGrom shows off the battle scars on his right knee. “I busted up my knee and had to get 20 stitches in that,” he says. “The back of my leg had to get stitches. I’m lucky I never broke anything, but I was always having to get stitches.”

Murphy is ready for the opener; roster has 8 relievers anda 4-man bench, which means deGrom could pinch-hit.

Mejia to DL -- "no structural damage" -- and righty Erik Goeddel up. Familia presumed to close.

The 'unorthodox' lineup will continue. (On Monday Ron Darling pronounced himself "irritated" at Lagares 6th, Keith felt similarly about Wright 2nd. I really don't understand their reps as superior analysts, except for the extreme idiocy in other booths.)

Mets-enfreude, eh? I'm not sure why 2 WAR is significant... Meant to look up Rusty Staub's pair of deluxe PH years, when he was 40 or so.

I will be in the first row in the LF corner if you wanna look for me on the teevee tonight.
