Van Wagenen humored him. He organized a workout for Tebow in Florida alongside a few Cuban prospects, and after putting Tebow through a series of hitting drills, he came away … impressed. Tebow’s swing clearly needed work, but when he connected, he could really drive the ball. After watching a few drills, Van Wagenen asked Tebow if he wanted to stop. He had seen enough, and Tebow hadn’t swung in a while; his hands must have been sore. But Tebow shook him off and kept swinging. He would show Van Wagenen how badly he wanted this. Not until the workout ended did Van Wagenen notice the red seeping through Tebow’s batting gloves. He had taken so many swings that blisters on his hands had burst open, and he’d just kept going. Tebow peeled off the gloves. Blood was gushing from his palms.

Tim Tebow brought new meaning to the phrase “play ball” during Tuesday night’s outing against the Lakewood Blue Claws.
The God-fearing athlete — who is now playing for the Mets’ Single-A team, the Columbia Fireflies — threw a baseball that accidentally hit a New Jersey man right in the family jewels.
“They were warming up and throwing in front us, and I wasn’t paying attention,” said Doug Brustman, who brought his 13-year-old daughter to see her idol play.
Brustman had bought tickets as soon as they went on sale and managed to snag seats in the first row behind the visitor’s dugout at FirstEnergy Park.
But the dream location turned into a painful encounter when the former NFL quarterback overthrew a ball to a teammate. It zoomed right underneath the railing — and found its landing pad on Brustman’s nether regions.
“I hear this guy behind me yell, ‘Watch out,’” said Brustman. “And as he’s yelling, the ball comes right through the railing and hits me right in the nuts. It was a direct hit.”
As the 45-year-old, Manchester, NJ resident was doubled over in pain, he was able to squeak out one question: Who threw that?
“It was literally like a Seinfeld episode. The guy behind me shouts, ‘It was TEBOW,’” said Brustman. “It reminded me of his days with the Jets when he couldn’t complete a pass. This guy is so inaccurate, even with a baseball.”

Charleston RiverDogs: 'Our intent was not to offend anyone' by poking fun at Tim Tebow
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link
i'd be curious to see the statistics of some of the guys who are not getting promoted...
The New York Mets are promoting Tim Tebow from low-A ball to St. Lucie of the Advanced A League. He was batting .222 with 3 home runs, 23 RBIs, a .311 on-base percentage and a .340 slugging percentage with 69 strikeouts and 23 walks in 212 at-bats for the Columbia Fireflies."It's not like he's tearing up the league, but at the same time all of the indications are positive in terms of various things we look at -- chase rates and exit velocity," Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said. "The bottom line is the average isn't there, but he's improving."Tebow, 29, signed with the Mets in September and spent time in the Florida Instructional League and the Arizona Fall League. He won the Heisman Trophy with the Florida Gators and helped the team take two national championships. He played professionally for the Denver Broncos from 2010 to '11, leading them to a playoff overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011, and the New York Jets in 2012.Tebow spent time in training camps with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 and 2015 respectively, but he never played in the regular season for those teams.

mlb would be wise to try to develop this into a regular pipeline of failed football players converting into crowd-drawing novelties. imagine a world series decided by a 350lb defensive tackle sliding into home. what better spectacle could baseball provide?

Tim Tebow is not taking well to Triple-A Syracuse. He went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts today, falling to .143/.211/.186 with a 35-percent K rate in 21 games. Tebow has just three extra-base hits and no home runs.— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) May 2, 2019
