I think some of the talk is pre-mature at this point. Getting Maddon was a good move, he is a smart guy and a guy used to working with young players. Jon Lester is a good starter, but I don't know that he is maybe a win or two a year better than Shark, who they dealt to the A's. Offense could be pretty good, especially if Bryant turns into something big a the plate. They of course could roll out hot and win 90 games, but I think it more likely they end up around .500, which would still be a notable improvement over last years 73-89.

Kris Bryant will be the 1st player to start at 3B & hit 4th in his MLB debut in over 50 years.

mookieproof, Friday, 17 April 2015 15:23 (eight years ago) link

@based_ball

compared to last year, in Triple-A Kris Bryant's walk rate, strikeout rate, and fielding percentage got worse, so now he's improved enough

franklin, Friday, 17 April 2015 15:42 (eight years ago) link

Is there a thread for crazy-priced baseball cards on eBay? Holy shit are people acting like Kris Bryant is an all-time HoF great, and he hasn't even played a single goddamn game. Granted I don't know jack shit about baseball cards, but these are going for literally thousands of dollars.

I don't know about Bryant and Russell yet but Soler is awesome. He actually has some plate discipline!

I feel kind of bad for Javier Baez, he was terrible last season but he's young and it was one season but it feels like people have already forgotten/dismissed him.

The Cubs are looking scary good right now, Arrieta and Lester in a best of five is scary enough even before you get to talking about their offense.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 20 September 2015 09:11 (eight years ago) link

Lester hasn't been very reliable this year. I think the lack of pitching depth is what will eventually sink them this year.

Immediate Follower (NA), Sunday, 20 September 2015 17:08 (eight years ago) link

Though Maddon has been doing a good job of pulling the weaker starters early before they can get into too much trouble.

Immediate Follower (NA), Sunday, 20 September 2015 17:09 (eight years ago) link

ou don't need much rotation depth in the PS; just 3 starters

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 20 September 2015 17:24 (eight years ago) link

Lester's overall numbers are in line with what he's done the past few years, and he's been better in the second half. Two great starting pitchers can be enough to win the WS, the Giants won last year with only one.

Keep hearing that Lester has been just okay, not sure where that's coming from: 13th-best FIP in baseball and 7th best FIP of SPs heading to playoffs; 21st-best ERA/13th-best in playoffs. Dodgers certainly have a better 1-2, and Mets are arguable (Harvey beats Lester on ERA, but Lester beats Harvey on FIP), but the Cubs' 1-2 is comfortably in the top three.

And FWIW after the 1-2, if you're going by FIP leaderboards, Hendricks is .01 away from being best third SP in the playoffs (that honor belongs to Pirates' Happ with a 3.45).

franklin, Thursday, 1 October 2015 21:19 (eight years ago) link

His big flaw is holding runners, right? Do any of the advanced stats account for that? I assume WAR does.

polyphonic, Thursday, 1 October 2015 21:45 (eight years ago) link

don't think it does. fWAR definitely doesn't (fWAR is just strikeouts, walks, and HRs iirc).

90% bWAR doesn't take it into account either? well, at least not directly. but indirectly, bWAR probably factors in poor baserunner management because not being able to hold runners on first would ultimately lead to more runners in scoring position and more runs scored, right? i dunno, i'm making all this up.

1997 ball boy (Karl Malone), Thursday, 1 October 2015 21:48 (eight years ago) link

That got a lot of press (rightfully so: he leads the league with 44 SBs allowed), and could contribute to his ERA being higher than his FIP (e.g., although his K/BB/HR numbers are good, when a runner does get on base they're more likely to score). But his ERA is still quite good, probably because it's hard to get on base against him.

xp agree with the mailman re: how likely each WAR is to take it into account

franklin, Thursday, 1 October 2015 21:57 (eight years ago) link

I sort of see an argument that this is uniquely problematic in the playoffs: the games are more important and so you're going all-out in a way you don't in the regular season. But if running all over him means certain doom, why weren't teams doing it all year long and giving him worse numbers?

Recent outings against STL/PIT, as teams that might have been playing with more of a playoff mindset: 7 IP and 2 ER (5 baserunners allowed, 0 SB and 0 CS), 6 IP and 4 ER (9 baserunners allowed, 1 SB and 2 CS), 9 IP and 1 ER (6 baserunners allowed, 1 SB and 1 CS), 7 IP and 1 ER (3 baserunners allowed, 1 SB and 0 CS).
