Always found him really intriguing--had already won 40 games by the time he was 21, 150 before he turned 30, wins 17 twice more after that, retires at 34. As measured by the primary benchmark of his day--by WAR, he's pretty steadily in the 3.0-4.0 range--he was on track for the HOF for the first half of his career.

yeah i looked at his stats and he put up some numbers. and it's always funny how these guys who are probably regarded now as nothing more than above-average starting pitchers would regularly go out and have 12 complete games and 3 shutouts in a season.

Great line about his near-perfect game in that obit: "Pappas then began yelling obscenities from the mound, half of them in Greek."

Lots of interesting Pappas stuff in the "Hey Bill" section of James's site.
-- short version of whether or not he was on a HOF track: "No; other than Pappas himself, nobody ever suggested that he was a Hall of Famer. He was always a #2 starter."-- famous clubhouse lawyer-- suspected of murdering his wife-- published a memoir that was candid about amphetamine use in the game (post-Ball Four, I assume)-- the main player on the other end of the Baltimore-Cincy Frank Robinson trade

The Dodgers lose the pennant.
Had a chance at Cooperstown to get him and Thomson to co-sign something, but I was just against the idea of paying for an autograph. Now wish I'd gotten the two of them and Don DeLillo to sign a copy of Libra.
