I feel like that is gonna be an apt response to most of his early starts, just looks kinda shook all the damn time, including tonight (scoreless through 2 with 3 Ks but the giants offense does not historically work quickly so that doesn't mean much)
also i know he's 19 but damn he looks short as shit

no way... he has to somehow get traded. i look at that dudes numbers and all i can think is that this is a dude who doesn't give a shit anymore. if he's on a team where he gives a shit maybe he'll play better.

over the past three and a half seasons, b-ref has kemp at 1.7 war -- total. fangraphs has him at 0.9. he still has some power, but he can't play defense, can't get on base, can't run, and isn't known for being injury-free.
he has three and a half seasons left, for about $75m (although the dodgers are paying about $12m of it). even if the padres offered to pay half what he's owed, who would take him? $10m/year might not buy much these days, but it's still a good bit more than kemp likely to be worth whether he gives a shit or not
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 15 June 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link
Matt1:09 Did Matt Kemp's stills really erode this quickly, or do you think perhaps it's a little bit of him looking around at the state of the team, realizing he'll probably be traded and thinking "Screw it, might as well hit a few homers until they find me a new home"?
Dave Cameron1:09 Probably a bit of both.

The Dodgers pitching staff is in bad shape, as Clayton Kershaw remains out with a back injury that could require surgery, and Alex Wood is set to undergo arthroscopic elbow debridement surgery. As a result, Los Angeles is expected to look to land a top-of-the-rotation starter at the deadline.

― carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Saturday, 23 July 2016 03:21 (seven years ago) link
well the subtext is that the dodgers -- fuck them! -- can afford a terrible contract. relievers are popular and kenley's pretty good after all

And they had a 5-0 lead so there wasn't much danger of losing the game.
In the postgame, Hill faithfully recited the lines he was fed by the front office but he looked pissed off and said his finger felt fine.
