statcast data say that eaton is underrated by UZR, btw

looked at the nationals top prospects and while their best prospect is a centerfielder, he's only 19. i don't see any reason to panic for the time being tho. re-evaluate around trade deadline

k3vin k., Monday, 1 May 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

Is it a foregone conclusion that Harper doesn't resign with the Nats when the time comes? Am I missing something? He seems love it there and the Nationals are raking tons of cash these days.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 May 2017 19:30 (six years ago) link

I always figured he was going to sign an insane, record-breaking deal with the Yanks, but I can definitely see him playing his career in Washington

frogbs, Monday, 1 May 2017 19:40 (six years ago) link

According to Joe Posnanski quoting somebody else, on track through 25 games to score the most runs ever.

clemenza, Monday, 1 May 2017 23:43 (six years ago) link

Checked that. Their projected 1,102 would beat the 1931 Yankees' 1,067, but not the 1894 Boston Beaneaters' 1,220 (Hugh Duffy). More realistic targets: 1950 Red Sox (1,027), 1999 Indians (1,009).

clemenza, Monday, 1 May 2017 23:51 (six years ago) link

great job whoever decided to do that the day they scored 23

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 00:29 (six years ago) link

harper himself is on pace to absolutely shatter the modern record for runs in a season tho (ruth with 177 in 1921). harper on pace for 207, assuming he plays the whole year

k3vin k., Tuesday, 2 May 2017 00:40 (six years ago) link

i don't think anyone has any idea what will happen when harper hits free agency. it's an unprecedented situation, like trying to put together a trade package for trout

mookieproof, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 00:40 (six years ago) link

PECOTA has them scoring 623 the rest of the way for an unhistoric 793.

Looking like the Nats might have to open up the bank to fix that bullpen if they want to win it all. Scherzer you could just let him go for nine, but you are not going to be able to play match up with these guys against the other NL likely playoff offenses.

earlnash, Tuesday, 27 June 2017 02:32 (six years ago) link

I normally don't pay much attention at this time of year but CW is as follows: Reliever situation apparently being relieved. Offense generally smoking.

Now they just need to decide when to choke in the postseason, right?

didgeridon't (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 17 July 2017 16:53 (six years ago) link

i think there's also the question of whether dusty will exhaust his starters while running away with the division

mookieproof, Monday, 17 July 2017 17:39 (six years ago) link

two relievers may not be enough

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 17 July 2017 17:39 (six years ago) link

Definitely won't be.

Gukbe, Monday, 17 July 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

So, when does the inevitable chokefest begin?

didgeridon't (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 17 July 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link

Are you thinking a big enough chokefest to cost them the division? Some other year, not this one.

Cannibal Adderley (WilliamC), Monday, 17 July 2017 20:32 (six years ago) link

Oh no, the division is clearly theirs. They easily stomp the Mets/Braves/etc. The question is when they fold against more spirited competition.

didgeridon't (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 17 July 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

But nobody's shit works in the playoffs. I'd be loath to call it a chokefest unless they get swept in round 1 and don't score any runs.

i can't imagine even humoring the term "choke" for any team that isn't houston or LA. this nats team is good but not on that level (and they play in the easiest division ever)

qualx, Monday, 17 July 2017 22:47 (six years ago) link

Gukbe, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 13:30 (six years ago) link

Eddie Matz
ESPN Senior Writer

With thousands of local campers in attendance at Nats Park, Washington has homered eight times through four innings. That's two shy of the single-game mark set by the '87 Blue Jays. The Nats tied an MLB record by going deep five times in the third, including four straight (also record-tying).

Surprise!

While pitch counts are crude metrics, only 10 teams have allowed a starting pitcher to exceed 120 pitches this season; only two teams have allowed it to occur on multiple occasions.

Baker and the Nationals have accomplished it four times.

Baker is lapping the field....

It’s not curious just that Baker is leaning on his starters to an unusual degree relative to the league in 2017, but that he’s doing so at a time when the Nationals have a 14-game lead in the NL East and a 100% chance of reaching the NLDS according to FanGraphs playoff projections entering Monday. This would seem like the time to give players more rest when possible.

I was looking up something about Scherzer this morning and noticed that three of the Top 10 career leaders in K/9 currently pitch for the Nationals. Conceding there's a heavy era-bias there, that's still amazing--could you find another team in history where three of the top 10 anything played for one team? Maybe Ruth, Gehrig, and someone else were once 1-2-3 in career HR, I don't know.

clemenza, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 14:39 (six years ago) link

Strasburg tossed a complete game shutout! only his second career shutout, and in his second career complete game. i remember the good ol days when a John Tudor could startle everyone and even himself and throw 10 shutouts in a season.
