The dry, underachieving ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS thread for 2011

GM Kevin Towers said during a conference call today that Micah Owings, whom the club signed to a minor league deal, will compete for a long-relief spot out of the bullpen in spring training.

But, most interestingly, Towers also said Owings will see time in spring training at first base.

“I would imagine he’ll see a little bit of time at first base -- how much time I can’t tell you,” Towers said. “I know we definitely want to get him some at-bats. He is kind of a dual-weapon guy. It would be nice to have a guy who on the days he may not be pitching you would still have a very good right-handed bat to win a game for you.”

He has snorted wasabi and eaten horseradish by the bowlful. He has devoured a dozen donuts and guzzled 13 bottles of water. And this is the PG-rated version. "Tooz will eat anything except poop, urine and vomit," Diamondbacks reliever Sam Demel said. "No, wait—I'm sorry. He will eat vomit."

Demel cited the memorable day when a former teammate regurgitated some yogurt and slathered it on a potato chip for Motuzas. Demel also said he once saw Motuzas ingest a concoction of chewing tobacco dip spit and 3-day-old chili.

Pitcher Livan Hernandez became something of a sadistic benefactor when he arrived in Arizona in 2006. Motuzas said Hernandez once paid him $3,000 to drink a gallon of milk in 12 minutes. The two also hammered out a deal that permitted Hernandez to punch Motuzas in the groin for $50 a pop whenever he felt the urge. Motuzas would receive a $300 bonus after every 10th punch.

"I know for a fact that every time Brad Penny pitched for the Dodgers in San Diego it was probably the lowest velocities he ever had. He liked velocity. He'd stare at the board. He was throwing 95-96 (mph), but we'd have it at 91 and he'd get pissed off and throw harder and harder and start elevating."

He pitched after THAT? What the fuuuuuuuuu

NO, he didnt --

Sunday afternoon, Angel Pagan lined a comebacker off Jason Marquis' shin bone. Marquis stayed in the game, but the next inning, he was consequently involved in one of the strangest baseball scenes I've ever witnessed:
(gif)
Marquis hit Josh Thole in the leg with a pitch. Thole went down, and Marquis went down - the former because he got hit by a baseball, and the latter because he had a fractured leg. By continuing to pitch after the comebacker, Marquis' injury got worse, to the point where this happened and he was removed.

I don't think it's unacceptable to say the fibula is also a shin bone. They're kind of side by side.

from USA Today:

According to ESPN.com, television announcer Daron Sutton has been suspended due to "insubordination." The report cited a dispute between Sutton and the club about the team's on-air dress code.

A source confirmed that dispute to The Republic, saying that while the club prefers its broadcast team to wear polo shirts adorned with the Diamondbacks logo, Sutton has lobbied to wear suits...

Without going into detail, another source said the Diamondbacks have had various issues with Sutton for years.

Bee OK, Friday, 29 June 2012 00:37 (eleven years ago) link
