BANNER DAY restored by Mets for 2012 (a fan-participatory promotions thread, no beer riots or record-demolitions please)

I attended several of these in decades past! As you may know, casey Stengel called them "placards."

Sandomir, NYT:

On Nov. 16, 1961, the Mets introduced their skyline-and-Brooklyn Bridge logo. They had not yet played a game.

Their chairman, M. Donald Grant, 16 years from being reviled for trading Tom Seaver to Cincinnati, presented a $1,000 check to the logo’s creator, Ray Gotto. He was perhaps best known for being the inspiration for the Ozark Ike comic strip, which seems appropriate enough considering the almost daily comedy the Mets proceeded to create in 1962 as they stumbled to a historically awful record of 40-120.

Five decades later that logo has been reinvigorated in preparation for the team’s 50th anniversary season in 2012. Much has happened to the Mets over the last 50 years, more of it bad than good, but at a news conference Wednesday at Citi Field to kick off the anniversary campaign there were no regrets, no ghosts from the past, just enthusiasm for what is in store.

Those plans include the restoration of Banner Day, a bedsheet extravaganza that hasn’t been around since 1996; a bobblehead-a-month promotion that will feature Mets stars of each decade; and the creation of a Web site — Mets50.com — that will allow fans to post photos and words that illustrate their Mets memories, with one grand-prize winner receiving a pair of season tickets.

The 2012 uniforms will also pay tribute to the team’s original look, with the black drop-shadows removed from the letters and numbers. And there will be the new logo, which was unveiled on Wednesday, the skyline still there but the word “Mets” and the silhouette of the bridge replaced with a large “50th” and with the word “Anniversary” in a ribbon.

One of my favorites appeared in '84: SHEA BATHROOMS ARE TEMPLES OF DOOM

six months pass...

couple of faves included

OCCUPY WILPON

and a woman holding this one:

MARRY ME, MR MET. WE'LL HAVE A BALL.

Of course since they hadn't had one in 16 years, a banner honoring Piazza's allegedly "healing" post-9/11 HR won. Neat pandering.

i'm not sure what time the eclipse is happening further east, but there's some red tape involved in changing game times -- i'd be kinda surprised if any of them *didn't* do it
