'til the Wheelers come off; the Kiner's Kornerless 2014 New York Mets

As for being a semi-veteran now, Wheeler said he will do his part for whichever rookies in camp need assistance. There are no shortage of folks without major-league experience among pitchers, including Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Rafael Montero, Jeff Walters, Jack Leathersich, Adam Kolarek and Cory Mazzoni.

“I let it be known to some of the other guys that if they need some help with anything, if they have any questions, go ahead and ask me,” Wheeler said.

"Let me offer you this: If there are concerns, what often ends up happening is we have an opportunity, along with Major League Baseball, to sit down and discuss perhaps what the game plan might be or could be going forward," said Clark, who played for the Mets in 2003. "... Is New York one of the marquee franchises? Yes. Will they always be? Yes. Are we paying attention in general? Yes."

The Post recently reported that a current team loan, due to be refinanced, had payroll constraints written into the terms by lenders.

"No, we are not aware of that," said Clark, who spoke with media in Port St. Lucie after the union had its annual meeting with players.

The Mets also have disputed that reported language.

has Sandy solved Citi?

It seems Alderson had a specific plan in mind this offseason. He wanted to upgrade the outfield defense and he wanted fly ball hitters. He wanted players with this profile because—through some combination of a quirky park factor and perhaps poor defense—Citi Field is susceptible to balls hit in the air, and he wants to use this factor against opposing teams. If it works, perhaps Alderson will have solved the riddle of Citi Field.

Will Woods at BP:

Say this for the Mets: they’re remarkably dedicated to getting fly ball pitchers to maximize their strong outfield defense and mask their horrendous infield counterparts. But the Mets have so much good young starting pitching—to the point that they’re thinking about converting some to the pen, rather than, you know, trading for some offense—that the prolonged flirtation with Daisuke is bizarre. Jenrry Mejia is ready for his shot. By the way, here’s how you know no one else offered Bartolo Colon a second year: The Mets have so much starting pitching talent coming down the pike that Colon basically signed up to be pitching just about anywhere by the end of July.

Jose Valverde, unavailable to Yahoo fantasy team owners but available to close games for the Mets:

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140326&content_id=70168662¬ebook_id=70168378

It will be a prominent role, to boot. Manager Terry Collins said that he may hold Parnell back from appearing on three consecutive days early in the season; on those nights, Valverde will pitch the ninth.

"You'd like your closer to go three or four in a row before you might think about giving him a day off," Collins said. "[But] we've got to make sure how Bobby feels. After two days in a row, I'll certainly be on top of that.

"Certainly [Valverde] is … going to hopefully be that bridge to Bob. And those nights that Bobby is going to need a night off, it's going to have to be Jose that's going to pick up the slack."

Important comma placement in the first sentence.

Matt who?

Mets going to 6-man rotation at least for this turn, deGrom next on Monday vs Marlins

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 11:20 (nine years ago) link

The Elias Sports Bureau notes that (deGrom is) one of three pitchers in Mets history to have an ERA below 3.00 through the first 20 starts of his debut season. The other two: Tom Seaver and Dwight Gooden....

Since starting 0-4, deGrom is 8-2 with a 1.77 ERA in 12 starts. Since June 21, his ERA ranks third-best in baseball, behind only Clayton Kershaw’s 1.19 and Corey Kluber’s 1.61. His .535 opponents’ OPS trails only Kershaw’s .464 and Garrett Richards’ .510.

Not only did the scoreboard watching go right for the Mets from the perspective of the wild-card standings (yes, go ahead and laugh), it went right for deGrom from a statistical perspective as well.

DeGrom’s chief competition in the Rookie of the Year race, Billy Hamilton, finished Tuesday 0-for-4 for the Reds, dropping his batting average to .260.

Unlike the wild card, this will be a neck-and-neck race probably right down to the final day. DeGrom’s pitching entering the day was worth 2.5 Wins Above Replacement. Hamilton was a hair behind him. His offensive and defensive performance has been worth 2.4 WAR.
