phatic banter

Unlike most other North American professional sports, legions of ministers and field workers meander about NASCAR spaces, proffering insight into God's plan, and engaging in a practice commonly referred to as "making friends." Prior to offering the prerace 2008 Daytona 500 invocation, Rev. Bobby Welch, former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach, explained the faith-peddling strategy this way: "What better opening for a conversation about eternal things than after a crash at the speedway, while sitting knee-to-knee with someone who may not have that assurance of heaven and eternal life," he said. "What an opportunity to share the joy and peace and purpose you have in life because of Christ, during casual conversations" (quoted in Pinsky, 2008).

As we learned, this form of first-person Evangelism entails approaching potential converts and converted alike to discuss faith, racing, and in some cases even the rapture. These missionaries methodically advance toward NASCAR-loving consumer-flâneurs and launch into rehearsed race-related phatic banter, such as "Who do you think'll win the race today?", to more banal conversation starters such as "Beautiful day for a race today, ain't it?", to more pointed entrées such as "Hello friend, have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?" (Fieldnotes).

"hello, friend", you feel their smooth hand coil round your wrist.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 29 July 2014 08:07 (nine years ago) link

first mistake, a single hand around the wrist is a v weak hold, simple twist and pull against the finger-thumb link breaks it even in cases of considerable disparity of strength. then like I said Trevor, ken-giri and a few choice gouges and away

tbh entire days at work can consist of phatic banter. part protective shield, part avoiding personal engagement which would be mutually baffling or unwelcome.

Q.6 As a kid, Which professional player did you pretend to be?

My player growing up was the legend Steven Gerrard - and still is today! I used to wear my Liverpool kit around the garden and speak in his accent too, haha.

Q.7 What would you be doing now if you wasn't a footballer?

I am, 17 so I'd probably be at the Sixth Form College studying something to do with sport.

“Did you catch the game?”

Athletic events are often shown on televisions in shelters. “Talking about sports can be one of the most interesting, neutralizing things,” says Robert Marbut, a homeless advocate in San Antonio, Texas. So while the game you’re referencing depends, of course, on your locale, bringing it up is like talking about the weather — sports is a topic of conversation that you don’t have to be of a certain class to experience.
