Montgomery mocked Ramanauskas, who underwent surgery and two bouts of treatment last year to remove a tumour from his shoulder and neck area.
The AFL last month warned players they could be penalised for sledging opponents, in the wake of a torrent of sexual assault cases that have tarnished the game.
But the AFL did not level a penalty on Montgomery, satisfied that the All-Australian backman was fined $2000 by his club and his public apology.
Montgomery is believed to have sledged Ramanauskas during a scuffle in the final quarter and the taunt was overheard by field umpire Mathew James, who decided not to lay a report or award the Essendon winger a free kick.
"In the heat of the moment and out of frustration I made reference to Adam's medical treatment," he said in a statement.
"My reactionary comments were a spur of the moment thing, and something I regretted immediately.
"I tried to apologise that night, and have since sent a letter of apology to Adam.
"I certainly feel for what Adam has gone through and respect his efforts to get back and play football at the highest level.
"I apologise for saying what I did, but reiterate it was done in the heat of the moment and it was not meant to hurt Adam personally."

At least the small-occasion hack apologised, which I suppose is something.

Nah sorry fellas, I disagree. If Rama is going to sledge someone, he should expect it back. What was said was nasty, but in the middle of a stouch, things get nasty...
Too much political correctness in the game now.
The other thing that pisses me off is the neverending claims of racism. For me, the colour of someones skin is a physical attribute. Calling someone black is no different to calling someone fat - they are both references to physical attributes. If the black was followed up by something like "unemployed petrol sniffer", then maybe its gone to far...
I'm willing to get flamed on my stand on this, but PC has just gone too far...

Benno, id be interested in the reponse you would receive if you called someone a fat c.. and then called someone else a black c..., i think the diffences in responses would be huge.
Not sure what you'd call dean roili tho?? Fat Mexican??
― jsa, Thursday, 1 April 2004 23:31 (twenty years ago) link
Re Rioli: I might call him a fat prick but it's almost in admiration of the fact that he's survived to play nearly 100 games despite having a body shape that couldn't be more unsuited to the game if it tried.

"Benno, id be interested in the reponse you would receive if you called someone a fat c.. and then called someone else a black c..., i think the diffences in responses would be huge."
Both are just words describing physical attributes? I don't know - racism to me is preventing someone from opportunity due to their colour or background - not petty namecalling on a footy field...

Not sure how I feel about this sledging, I agree that in the middle of a game if sledging starts on one side be prepared to get it back, but yes Montgomery's words were very low indeed. Rama has obviously gone through not only physically trying but mentally exhausting times with the chemo, have nothing but admiration for him being able to come back and play elite level footy again. The cynic in me says Montgomery apolgised because he got a fine, but then maybe he is sorry.
As for the physical attributes stuff then to agree calling someone a Fat C and be as offensive as calling someone a Black C, but again it is how the individual receives it - it they deem it offensive - then it is.

There are sledges and there are sledges, what Brett Montgomery said crossed the line.
Are we allowed to start calling the St Kilda player a rapist?
― chrisso (chrisso), Friday, 2 April 2004 04:27 (twenty years ago) link
Do you have a red headed mate called Blue? A white haired mate called Snowy? Ever called a port fan a toothless feral? its a name based on a physical attribute...
REB, I don't necessary condone calling someone a black basta5d, but I believe it is name calling about a physical trait.
As I said before, as far as I'm concerned, racism is not allowing equal opportunity based on skin colour. Its preventing people living a normal life due to the colour of their skin, their upbringing etc.
I'm probably outta line with the rest of the world on this, but I could argu forever.
PS - Go the Pies this weekend... avagoodweekend the rest of ya!

Aboriginals were not even included in the census in this country until 1967 so it is not a case of 'pc gone mad' but rather some belated enlightenment and a half-arsed attempt at real equality that is going on today.

Personal attacks should be out of bounds on the full, no free kick, no possession, no 50 metre penalty but a bloody big fine, and a weeks rest depending on the severity!
As for the soapbox - I'm staying on it!

As usual Caro nails it. I missed her on 'Talking Footy'. Also Rohan Connolly on Essendon (his team) is also interesting, although you gotta wonder what the motivation for the article was. He basically accuses Essendon of being all bluff and bulldust nowadays.

The fact that these things happened before my lifetime should not make me accountable for them occuring. In the civilisation I live in in 2004, I do believe that opportunity is as close to equal as it has EVER been.
Yes, people get descriminated against for age, height, weight, sex, sexual preference, skin colour, religious beliefs and a plethora of other reasons, but the basic fabric of society, rights and obligations are available to every person regardless of social or racial upbringing.
As for personal attacks, ffs, what happens on the field stays on the field (within reason), you have a beer with your opponent after the game and any ill feelings is left there.

Exactlty WTF is it about the 'right' to slag off a bloke who's got cancer, that makes it worth anybody's while to put up an argument for?
― Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Sunday, 4 April 2004 22:30 (twenty years ago) link
I go back to what I said at the start - Rama mouthed off at Montgomery in the heat of a footy match, so in response, Montgomery gave him a mouth full back. Montgomerys was below the belt, but probably never have happened if Rama hadn't fired off irst.
If you start a verbal war, don't go running to your mummy or the media if you cop a low shot...
As for this, its end of story. Apology made, headlines printed, story over. Lets get back to footy!
― Bennö (Bennö), Sunday, 4 April 2004 23:34 (twenty years ago) link
You would have to be kidding. Do you really beleive that sh1t??? Ramma gave him a FOOTY related sledge, what the Port idiot gave him was highly PERSONAL, if you don't know the difference I can't help you. The Port idiot should have reminded him that Essendon always lose to Port in the finals or somethying akin, there was no need to get personal.

Or can I assume that you have never said anything in an argument and regretted it before the words came out of your mouth?
― Bennö (Bennö), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago) link
Of course I have said things in the heat of the moment I have regretted, but I can honestly say I have never gone as low as to tease or taunt someone about a life threatening condition. Benno, you are defending the indefensible.
P.S He wouldn't need 5 minutes to work out that Port have dominated Essendon recently, he only needed to look at the scoreboard.;-)

I found about 50 empty nitrous cartridges and empty packaging (Ultra-Purewhip). I know which tenant is using them (not for whipping cream). This is not the first time I've found these cartridges. Not quite sure what to do with this info but I am alarmed by it.
