Mods, PLEASE can you delete this thread now that I have learnt my lesson the hard way

Someone has turned the central part of it into a YTMND article about me which features in the top 10 of me when Googled. My mother just googled me and found it. Now has announced she's not talking to me again.

Holy fuck, if i find out who did it...

...but I've emailed them and asked for it to be deleted so we should be OK.

Could the parent thread also go? I've had to learn the hard way (and it hasn't taken nearly so long as some thought it would), but FUCKING HELL, I know I made a mistake, but someone (whose YTMND username is 'ILXor') has been an absolute cunt about it.

Also, Curtis, wherever you are, posting that picture of me on ILX was a fucking stupid idea. It was used in that YTMND thing to validate the claim in the post. Now everyone has access to it. The sooner the thread can be deleted, the better.

And if you ARE that ILXor who YTMND'd me, I'm asking you now, very 'funny' as it was, to delete whatever you did before I get the YTMND legal team properly involved.

Thanks,

LJ.

P.S. Don't use my name in this thread either, cheers. I know someone really 'lol internet haha' will, but you're a fucking cunt to do so.

As a thought: should ILX ban the person who made the YTMND? I understand that it's not at fault but it does seem to go beyond the limits of what is acceptable behaviour regarding other users? Sure LJ was a bit indiscrete and god knows he abused that submit button but did he do anything to justify another user setting up an easily googlable webpage outside of ILX? I don't know, I just think that he was treated fairly shabbily and while he did invite a lot of abuse intentionally (attention seeking etc) he doesn't seem to have been a bad guy. I would like to feel that the majority of people on this messageboard are okay in general and would feel much the same way at what's just happened. Could we not at least do something about the user who did this lest they try it again with someone else? [/homily]

kv_nol, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:18 (seventeen years ago) link

It being ILX as a whole. Sorry a bit unclear the whole para!

kv_nol, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:19 (seventeen years ago) link

That's a fair question. I don't think we can really ban someone for something that's taken place offboard, even if it did involve a copy of an ILX post. I'm not sure we'll know for sure who the offending poster was either.

Matt DC, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Also to the person who actually made that page, you are a creepy fucking weirdo.

Matt DC, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Pashmina, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Ask them very nicely if they keep an IP log? (or threaten with legal action unless they give you the IP address of the person who posted it over there so you can find them here?)

g-kit, Monday, 26 March 2007 12:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think we can really ban someone for something that's taken place offboard, even if it did involve a copy of an ILX post.

See, I think that because it was an ILX post and that it was such an extreme thing to have done that even though I wouldn't give away that much about me on ILX I would be uncomfortable that my minor contributions could be made such a traceable thing. There are many people on ILX known to others who have put a lot on the board and if this person did it once what's to prevent them or people like them from doing it to others? I'm just very uncomfortable with what was done, I can't help but feel that I'd love to have a precedent to warn off people in the future from doing such a thing. Act like a hateful tool = get banned. Spam = get banned. Try to fuck over someone using ILX contributions = get banned.

kv_nol, Monday, 26 March 2007 12:34 (seventeen years ago) link

if this person did it once what's to prevent them or people like them from doing it to others?

The behaviour of those others, I'd assume.

Post something (about a cat and your testicles, for instance) + be a nice guy who doesn't get into fights = no problem, nobody will abuse your openness.

Post something like LJ did + don't make peace with your enemies = you're on your own.

It's hard and it's unfair, but that's life.

It wasn't me who deleted the Dr C thread in question and I wouldn't personally have done so. But the main reason I wasn't moved to oblige LJ's request upthread is a) it's his fault for being so astonishingly short-sighted and b) the original post is all over the fucking boards and probably saved on a couple of creeps' hard drives as well and I'm not seeking out every appearance of it.

Pash said he'd look into getting the original thread de-indexed, that should be enough really.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

The person who registered and linked from ILX should be banned.
That's what i was saying.
Fuck it, I'm not worried myself, but it is a bit INSANE that this happened.
Carry on.

aimurchie, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not advocating zapping LJ's thread, I just think a mod in the NU-no-admin-log-era should have known they would have been opening a can of worms by fufilling a request w/o a discussion on it.

Is it because Dr. C is an otherwise responsible poster who couldn't have known his thread would end up the way it did? Is it because he asked nicely? Is it because the rep of non-ILXors was at stake? I never got to read it, it got zapped pretty fast.

If we're not getting admin log back, at least use this board to explain non-routine admin actions.

It's just really bad minded of somebody to do that. I just hope they are very ashamed of themselves. Maybe they shouldn't be banned, but if the IP was requested without threatening, at least they could be unmasked and maybe they would leave themselves. That's probably a terrible idea, but it seems pretty just to me, not that handing out justice is the administrators job (I think). Disregard this post!

I know, right?, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:23 (seventeen years ago) link

The person who registered and linked from ILX should be banned.

marissa, is that you?

srsly wtf are you talking about? there is no link to ilx? there is no way to know who came onto ilx, copied a post and a picture and took it elsewhere? you wouldn't even have to register to post on ilx to be able to do this, actually? what are a couple people not understanding about this? not to mention if you're going to ban people for doing douchebaggy things then, well, goodbye 98% of the board.

^ this sums it up. To the best of my knowledge, ytmnd does not publically display the ip data of people who make pages there (wikipedia is the only place that I can think of that does off the top of my head). I emailed Louis a couple of days ago & suggested that he try and get the data out of them, but I suspect his chances of getting this are slim-zero. If someone from another board came to me asking for IP data from one of our users, there'd have to be some pretty major reason for me to do so. I can't actually think of a reason, tbh. If I were to approach ytmnd asking for the ip data of the person who put this up, they'd tell me to fuck off, face it.

I do not know who deleted Dr C's thread. I tend towards deleting individual posts from threads, myself, and then only if there are some serious IRL circumstances for doing so.

If LJ had requested deletion of his post, I might well have considered that a reasonable request under these circumstances, though it would have been locking the stable door after the horse had bolted in this case. I didn't delete the whole thread b/c a bunch of other people had posted to it, non related to LJ's story, and I don't think it would have been cool to shitcan those ppls thoughts because of that.

g®▲Ðұ, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 23:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Whatever. My understanding was that someone registered just to do this to LJ - and I believe every registration is monitored?
I have to sign in - I assume everyone else does - and it would not be hard to figure out who/where I am. it seems, to me, that somebody did this on purpose, and was registered under "Ilxor".
I'm asking a fucking question here, as opposed to amusing myself to death with my perceived cleverness.

But if making fun of me makes you happy, go right ahead. There are several threads that you can do so on, as well. Go for it.

aimurchie, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 23:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not making fun of you?

You don't have to sign in to read any thread on ILX, you only have to sign in to post here. In theory anyone could copy & paste any text they find here into any other board or WTFE on the interweb. I would assume the person who made the YTMND page is a regular here, why would anyone else bother?

YTMND is a completely different site to ILX, it has no connection with us, nor us to them, except (presumbably) for a (small) number of common users.

I still think it's like leaving your bike unlocked and then complaining it has been stolen. Of course it's wrong for someone to take it, but you should have locked it.

I think making that YTMND page was a really shitty thing to do, but it doesn't warrant a witch hunt. Google LJ's name and you still could have found that picture, that story and more, all on ILX, even without being registered here. All that ILXor did was link it all together on one page.

Also, a simple "haha you didn't actually believe that story, did you? I was just kidding!" could have defused this a bit, I think (regardless of whether it really happened or not), but now it's probably too late for LJ to start saying that. Especially since I just suggested it.

aimurchie, no one is going for you (least of all me). I'd leave your real name out of posts if poss, no point in making tracking your posts down too easy :)
