Ain't over 'til it's over! And I still have so many comics here to read!

I haven't finished my list yet. But I think Cairo (which I'm in the middle of) is gonna hit. Likely Sunderland too. And a few FirstSecond's. Otherwise it'll all be superhero comix.

Just finished Cairo. It was good, if not a little rough (the plot moves too quickly for any of the relationships to make much sense). I'm (hopefully) reading Black Dossier tonight (and I've got M.F. Grimm, Scott Pilgrim 4 still to go).

DrSupes, should I read Houdini?

i think we liked it when captain american died, but i'm not sure.

did anyone but me like maggots? it's not an intellectual thrill ride, but it's got some the most animated illustration--more than anything else i've read lately, even tho it was originally written in the mid-nineties.

I think we like that an event occurred in which Captain America died.

I've spent all of last year getting caught up on things from the past 15 years, so I have been hitting a bunch of things that were huge in years past.

Preacher - especially War in the Sun, Proud Americans and the first two trades. This was some amazing stuff.

Transmetropolitan - solid all around, but my favorite issue is the one the one shot about him sitting and watching TV.

100 Bullets - especially Wiley Runs the Voodoo Down & Hang Up on the Hang Low

Planetary

Justice (mini-series) - I still have the last three issues to go on this one, so hopefully they don't blow the ending, so far it is has been a real fun superhero story.

Global Frequency

DMZ

Punisher MAX- especially the Slavers & Barracuda trades

Batman - two Matt Wagner mini-series

Immortal Iron Fist - new trade #1

I've been curious about the whole Captain America run, as I really like Brubakers run with the Batman. I have not been able to pull the trigger, especially if they are going to end up making someone else Cap. My theory is that bumping off Cap was an attempt at covering up that he actually brought Bucky back to life, which to me seems more of a no no than killing off Steve Rogers.

I don't know how they handled the death and burial, but one way I figure they could explain Steve Rogers survival to slow regeneration of his tissue like Wolverine, just not as quick from the Super Serum. After all the guy was buried in a block of ice for over twenty (or maybe more now) years and didn't die.

Comics I want to check out in 2008-

Get caught up with current Green Lantern and Superman comics.

Re-read Byrne's run on Superman & Fantastic Four.

Re-read some Mike Grell's work on Green Arrow, Jon Sable and Warlord.

Check out more of the DC Elseworld tales like Kingdom Come, New Frontier, Superman & Batman: Generations.

Check out first trade of Casanova when it comes out in soft-cover.

Keep picking up old issues of Grim Jack and Nexus.

Read some more Jack Kirby, especially Fourth World stuff. (Then maybe check out what Simonson and Byrne did with the characters a few years ago.)

Check out some of the Alan Moore ABC comics.

Get Goodwin/Simonson Manhunter trade and look up some of Simonson's Thor run.

re: houdini

I dunno, I kinda liked it a lot. It's nothing MINDBLOWING, but if you like Nick Bertozzi, it is a very good example of his art. I read it before I even knew about The Salon, so it was a good appetizer for a big meal I didn't even know I was hungry for!

Special Forces deserves a special mention. I really love everything about it. Baker's style on it totally reminds me of the old Jack Davis Slim Jim ads.

This list goes to 11 - in no particular order (And I reserve the right to change it):

1. Silver Surfer Requiem: When Norrin actually goes, I hope they just reprint this.
2. Silent War: Hamlet on the moon.
3. Alice in Sunderland: Epic history of Sunderland, and graphic novels. Talbot's magnum opus.
4. The Professor's Daughter: Sfar = Genius.
5. Astonishing X-Men on Breakworld: If Whedon kills Kitty, I'll kill him.
6. Morrison Does Tights: All Star Superman + League of Batmen
7. Fables - The Frog King Arc: Fables comes into its own. Gorgeous and epic.
8. Penny Arcade: Video game commentary that's smart, funny and OTM.
9. Dan Slott's She-Hulk: Funny meta Chuck Austen jokes.
10.Iron and the Maiden: Like playing a pretty cyberpunk video game.
11. Messiah COMPLEX: The military complex but so SO SO much better.
12. [Space reserved for Scott Pilgrim 4]

WELL OKEY DOKEY...:

1. CHANCE IN HELL by Gilbert Hernandez. I call him "Beto", which I think will catch on among right-minded folks.
2. SCOTT PILGRIM VOL. 4
3. LOVE AND ROCKETS #20
4. TWO "PUNISHER" ONE-REEL WONDERS:
PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #4: where Frank blows up what amounts to a wake for the Silver Age.
PUNISHER MAX #50: The final page of which was the best punch to the gut I've gotten all year.
5. TOWN BOY/KAMPUNG BOY by Lat, the latter of which was released last year. A great deal of thanks to Douglas for the recommendation.
6. CASANOVA, with special mention of the most recent issue.
7. IMMORTAL IRON FIST
8. ALL STAR SUPERMAN

Lotsa other stuff I'm probably forgetting as well.

I liked a bunch of things this year. Um. My favorite thing that no one's brought up yet is Matt Fraction's ORDER for Marvel, one of their best launches since Runaways, and certainly the best thing to come out of Civil War. He's working through all the usual humps of a team book where the entire cast is invented from scratch, and managing to sketch out the characters with enough speed and detail that there's something to grab onto. Coming up with good villains is clearly a bit tougher, but he's got enough soap opera material within the team that you really don't care who they're fighting this issue. This just hit issue 6 and apparently sales are disappointing - if there's a trade out soon, that would be a really good place to jump on board.

I really love The Order, but I don't really know any of the main characters even though I read it week to week. And I'm not sure I have any idea what's going on at all. I still thoroughly enjoy it, but not being able to name a single character is a little troublesome for me.
