...This is the thread for the 80s direct market indie-but-not-very-indie boom! Also featuring Comico, Pacific, etc etc.

COMICO RULZ ALL! Grendel, Mage, Elementals (I kinda miss Bill Willingham, Artist), AND Robotech!

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 24 October 2004 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Don't forget Rocketeer (though Comico didn't run his first appearance), Sam and Max: Freelance Police, Gumby (Steve Purcell AND Art Adams), The Jam, Justice Machine and the AWESOME Ginger Fox miniseries by the Pander Brothers.

Eclipse is best remembered for bringing Miracleman to the US, as well as printing up some interesting horror/fantasy stuff from the likes of Bruce Jones, Mike Dringenberg, and some of the classic Studio artists. But that doesn't make 'em more of a giant than Comico in my eyes.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 24 October 2004 14:50 (nineteen years ago) link

First had Nexus, Comico had the Gumby Summer Fun Special (one of my favorite comics ever, too bad I've already used my nominations on the other thread), but Eclipse had the cat yronwode/Dean Mullaney soap opera. Judging strictly by the comics it's First over Comico by a nose, but for sheer OMGWTF it's Eclipse by ten lengths.

Hey, now - don't forget Badger & American Flagg for First! AND MUCH MUCH MORE!

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 24 October 2004 15:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Agreed, I didn't mean to imply that Nexus alone put First on top. For me, First was Nexus + Badger + Flagg (#1-27) and Comico was Grendel + Elementals + The Jam. (Whatever happened to Bernie Mireault? He was one of the most underappreciated creators of that period.) Slight advantage to First for larger body of consistently good work, though I think Grendel's best moments were better than Nexus' best moments.

I saw Antietam open for Yo La Tengo recently and my first thought was "So that's what Cat Yronwode's been up to lately..."

the apex of nadirs (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Has anyone read the Dark Horse "reprints" of Comico's Grendel? I was looking forward to them @ first, but the lackluster NEW Grendel stuff wore me down & I've been avoiding it. Also, I think I'd be better served hunting down the originals, but there's new material in the "reprints", isn't there?

Last I've seen of BM is some pinups he did for Jinx. I always confuse him w/ the Pander Bros.; no, I don't know why.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Re: Antietam: HA! But actually what cat yronwode's been up to lately is rather more omgwtf than that--see luckymojo.com . She is permanently my hero for having compiled The Lesser Book of the Vishanti, which is up at that site...

First-wise: Flagg, of course, esp. the first year, but am I the only person who totally loved Whisper? ("I'm NOT a ninja! I don't even know what a ninja IS!")

Eclipse-wise: don't forget Cap'n Quick And a Foozle, which I always suspected there was some kind of bizarre story behind. Also: the early appearances of Steve Ditko's completely batshit Static.

Eclipse is best remembered for bringing Miracleman to the US

.. and better remembered for keeping him there :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 07:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Tee hee!

Did the Gaiman issues of Miracleman actually come out in the UK at all, or not?

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 14:54 (nineteen years ago) link

I imagine so. I certainly picked up the collection in the shops, all legal like.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 14:57 (nineteen years ago) link

They came out in the UK just as much as any other comics only published in the US did, if that's what you're asking...? ie they weren't restricted from import

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 08:01 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, I bought several of them at the time.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 08:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually, I was wondering if they came out from Eclipse or another publisher. Given that Eclipse comics had troubles getting their books to stores in the states sometimes, I didn't want to assume that they'd made the effort to get 'em across the Atlantic.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 12:08 (nineteen years ago) link

FYI: Lunar eclipse tonight.

Re: The story behind Cap'n Quick and Foozle story: I have some memories of this but it's hazy. It was originally supposed to be a Steve Englehart story in DC Presents featuring Superman and ________ but it was rejected by DC because __________. Steve re-wrote it replacing Superman with the Foozle and whoever with Cap'n Quick.
Can anyone fill in the blanks.

First adapted almost all of Moorcock's Elric but Eclipse had Larry (Image) Marder's Tales of the Beanworld. Which is like comparing apples and oranges but the idea was they weren't Super-apples or Spider-oranges, if that makes any sense.

nine years pass...

re-reading a bunch of my old Eclipse comics (Zot! etc.) and man what an odd period this was for comics. You really get a sense of how small the community was. I mean there were letters page celebrities like T.M. Maple, Cat Yronwode writing columns consisting entirely of personal tidbits readers had sent in etc. A bunch of these Eclipse comics are p shitty and I barely remember most of them, and then notice that something significant somehow popped out, like Chris Ware's first comic.

also thank u thread for reminding me of Comico's Elementals, which was never really v good but man was I entranced by the artwork

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 20:08 (eight years ago) link

Bill Willingham, didn't he do a bunch of AD&D/role playing art too?

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 20:09 (eight years ago) link

And porn.

Do you have or use horses? (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 19 August 2015 20:11 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, in the D&D stuff I just gave away there were a bunch of early game modules with Willingham art. Comico had a decent hit rate -- The Jam, Elementals, Grendel.

rack of lamb of god (WilliamC), Wednesday, 19 August 2015 20:20 (eight years ago) link

I like that initial run of Mage a lot, that was the only Comico thing I've held onto

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 20:29 (eight years ago) link

First was a pretty solid company but then DC pretty much picked their talent away wholesale and they didn't have a second run of series or the ability to do back list sales to keep the line going like they do now. Nexus, American Flagg! and GrimJack were some of my favorite comics as a teenager.

Thing is that many of those titles sold crazy numbers compared to now. I seem to recall finding some tidbit in a mid-run version of Mr. Monster talking about how sales for like #4 or #3 was over 30000. That would be a sick number by today's standards but this was on a mid-line Eclipse comic back in the 80s.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 August 2015 03:23 (eight years ago) link

Aztec Ace on Eclipse was a neat Moench time travel thing.

I loooved cap'n quick and a foozle #1

Corn on the macabre (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 20 August 2015 03:29 (eight years ago) link

Willingham didn't rly do porn, and definitely not in the '80s

DC pretty much picked their talent away wholesale

iirc DC taking over their distro was the biggest kiss of death

"oh hey turns out we made you print nine times as many copies as before but no one even ordered 3 copies? Oops. Bye."
