so basically your argument is "back in the pigeonhole I have created for you, Kanye"

emo WINNER! (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

man i think this once again gets back to the whole thing we talked about uh somewhere in another thread about making the basic assumption of characters in songs vs. taking songs as statements of purpose/reality. like really to me (and uh dont get me wrong i am pretty into a good lyric) at the end of the day i cant really work a lot of the actual person into the song persona because that isnt how songs work for me.

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:33 (thirteen years ago) link

however i am pretty sure the dude in belphegor does in fact have a goat zombie that he uses for S&M gratification

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

It really isn't. I am not one of these people who got pissy at Andre 3000 for not rapping as much. But Kanye doing it, and then 'returning' as if rap 'needed' him is just eurgh. Like the genre couldn't survive with one dude going off singing and being a dickhole. And again, its really not hard to make an album to get people to sympathise with you and yr personal problems, just don't act like a dick about it ("my friend should me pictures of his kids, and all i could show him was my brand new cribs" being a way to start an album at the biggest time of foreclosures in decades is a p big dick move imo. etc etc etc)

Beats are nice tho.

man i think this once again gets back to the whole thing we talked about uh somewhere in another thread about making the basic assumption of characters in songs vs. taking songs as statements of purpose/reality. like really to me (and uh dont get me wrong i am pretty into a good lyric) at the end of the day i cant really work a lot of the actual person into the song persona because that isnt how songs work for me.

Yeah, that's the thing; maybe I am approaching this differently not because I'm a performer but because of the type of performing I do and the way I write, but even things that could conceivably be linked to me and my life aren't actually me when I am singing about them; like, I wrote a song about how I wanted to kill myself after my brother died, but when I sing that song I am not actually saying "btw I want to kill myself because my brother died". I am telling a story based on some emotions and experiences from my past, but the voice is a character.

Now, there are certain things that come through when you adopt certain characters that may come across as repellent, which may be your intent but may not be, which is why the whole n-word thread happened; there are certain topics that you need to be sure that your communication is on point otherwise all you will do is piss people off and brand yourself an asshole. (Arguably EVERY topic you write about should have this same attention to communication, if only to make sure that you interrogate your work from several angles and are okay with the differing responses it may evoke; "careful communication" does not equal "this song means this and this only and I will spell it out in unambiguous detail".)

xp: well Kanye's "return to rap" is the real point where his ego steps in; I see it less in his actual work and more in what projects he decides to do next and how he promotes himself. Also, to run off of that example, I don't think the timing of the financial collapse was really his fault or undermines the point made by that line, which is that Kanye-the-character is upset that he sacrificed making time for personal relationship and starting a family for acquiring wealth and that he feels empty inside in a manner that, to his eyes, his friend with a family does not.

emo WINNER! (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

ok yeah i get that. maybe i should add '+ half the lyrics are super embarrassing and he needs to go back to getting ghostwriters to help him.'

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:46 (thirteen years ago) link

tried clicking on a random song and got HOW COULD YALL BE SO DR EVIL proving my point.

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Kanye has been the king of embarrassing lyrics for his entire career with perhaps the sole exceptions of "Gold Digger" and "Love Lockdown" so I'm not overly mad at him for that.

emo WINNER! (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

oh and "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" too

emo WINNER! (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah but... aw hell i am just losing this here. I dunno, I guess his stupid lyrics used to have some charm that he started losing on Graduation for me (see stronger or drunk & hot girls or the chris martin one or the one about wanting to bum jay z or whatever) and mix in his whiny singing and i just stopped caring.

hahahaha ok i lied about vitalic, if someone had said "you know, the video with slow motion dogs and lasers" i would have known the error of my ways.

"Poney no 1 (slomo dogs and lasers remix)" is ok i guess, this "la rock 01" song is way weirder and more appealing to me, i feel like it could have crawled out of some weird pocket of the early 90s TC industrial rave scene, that wheedly high pitched wiggle thing is awesome. "My friend Dario" is fucking unmitigated electroclash garbage tho, gross.

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:17 (thirteen years ago) link

actually musically the song is ok, but somebody needs to shut that singing lady the fuck up.

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

ellen allien & apparat - listening to "Way Out" and uh. a little bored. not really down with floaty mushy vocals over the top of my techno i guess? def way more interested in vitalic based on what ive heard so far.

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

ok in the home stretch of "way out" and now ive moved on to hating the singer (not as much as that vitalic thing, but still. a lot.)

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:26 (thirteen years ago) link

ok way more into "Leave Me Alone", some really odd interesting things going on here, it sounds all lurching and broken, dude singing also works much better for me, like a creaky new order vocal thing going on. i really like this a lot actually.

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Hannah > Tina > Rachel > Jo

This has always been the correct order, well done.

Puyol Live in a Yellow Submarine (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:32 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd offer to guide peeps through the zone with stuff i dig from the list so far, but as i mentioned upthread i am apparently a moron that doesnt hear as much music as he thinks he does, so unless somebody needs a hard sell on Future Of The Left or the liars album, i got nothing for you prob unless you live in a darker cave than me and haven't heard "My President"

xpost wait huh what

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:34 (thirteen years ago) link

oh i see. sigh. i am old and feeble and confused

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:35 (thirteen years ago) link

lol got distracted by work but you already picked up the Vitalic/Ellen Allien & Apparat tracks I would have recommended

"La Rock 01" would have been very high on my track ballot assuming I remembered to nominate it

emo WINNER! (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:35 (thirteen years ago) link

if you promise me that there is nothing else like "My Friend Dario" in the vitalic catalog i will prob seek it out once i get home (uh and finish recovering files from my dead hard drive)

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:37 (thirteen years ago) link

also is the female vocal on the ellen allien a regular thing, because that will be a problem.

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:38 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha i rescind my liars offer, that is the album i hate, never mind

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Vitalic's Flashmob album is great, too

btw if you dig the music but are annoyed with the vocalist on EA&A, check out Moderat, specifically "A New Error", "Rusty Nails", "Sick with It" and "Porc #1"

EA&A switch back and forth between her and the dude from Apparat

also lol @ u because u hate gurls

97. RHYTHM & SOUND See Mi Yah (2005) [185 points, 9 votes]

depends on how into reggae you are, as a sound, but this kicks ass

goole, Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

hmmm reggae can be a problem

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

actually it might not, since i'm not the biggest reggae fan in the world and i like that album a lot. heavy as fuck.

lol xp

also, since I'm already recommending everything else on this record label, this is Modeselektor at a live set doing a fucking great track off of their Happy Birthday! album

emo WINNER! (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Hey im bored, so i am going to defend listening to Liars in the modern day with a song from their new album, which is not the one that made the countdown, because that one sucks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baq3EjdZ7vw

NOTE: dont get all weird on me and stop listening halfway through, its a slow build and then big payoffs from there you fuckers.

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Start sounds exactly like a Drums Not Dead song so I don't get yr point?

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 8 July 2010 22:15 (thirteen years ago) link

bump for my feelings as described in thread title about "dear science" TVOTR

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 22:45 (thirteen years ago) link

basically oh look a new tv on the radio album lets NAP

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 22:47 (thirteen years ago) link

oh and re: Liars ick, drums not dead just left me completely cold, maybe the whole annoying 2 character thing and the fact that i couldnt tell the song titles apart and the fact that it was mostly kinda boring i guess? earlier shit was just so unhinged album to album that drums just felt like a rut to me.

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 22:48 (thirteen years ago) link

goddamn, talk of early liars, you are bringing back memories from 2003 or some such wackity crack year of my life.

phoenix barf

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Friday, 9 July 2010 19:41 (thirteen years ago) link

also HI DERE u should school me on how to not dislike the yeah yeah yeahs i have been so far incapable of doing so

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Friday, 9 July 2010 19:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Phoenix seems like a band designed to be used in commercials (ie, their songs are fine for like 15 seconds, but around second 16 you're like "wait this is horrifically annoying, fuck off")

re: YYYs, what have you heard? All I've really heard are "Maps", "Y Control" and It's Blitz!; I think the video for "Y Control" is way better than the actual song, "Maps" is just gorgeous in how the music is arranged and the way she sings it, and IB! pretty much front-to-back is fantastic, especially if you listen to it as a series of EPs rather than an entire album (meaning I usually take "Zero", "Heads Will Roll", "Soft Shock" and "Skeletons" as a unit, then "Dull Life", "Blame and Fortune" and "Runaway" as a unit, and "Dragon Queen", "Hysteric" and "Little Shadow" as a unit).

For me, the album hits its stride around "Dull Life"; however, you are never going to like them because yet again it's a band fronted by a woman with a yelpy laserish voice and by now it is pretty well documented that you hate that type of thing.

"Don't forget to bring a juggalo towel!" (HI DERE), Friday, 9 July 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah that might be the big issue tbh

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Friday, 9 July 2010 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

also they are the band where the guitar player released a book of photos of their tour and them being AWESOME and doing ROCK AND ROLLING things and pimped it like some art triumph when in fact it was kind of like jerking off into a baggie and trying to get your friends to frame it and hang it on their wall.

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Friday, 9 July 2010 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I am kind of surprised you wouldn't fuck with "Maps" or "Y Control" though considering she's not at all yelpy or laserish on either of those

hxtp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIIxlgcuQRU

xp: but if the book had featured pictures of them jerking off into a baggie that would have been kind of funny; also the guitar player is a massive nerd and should be ignored whenever he's not playing

"Don't forget to bring a juggalo towel!" (HI DERE), Friday, 9 July 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link

all i can think of when i hear roison murphy is how much i prefer moloko. its the beth gibbons rustin man to molokos portishead imo.
