'it made sense in the 90s' would be a companion thread to '90s hot' of equally vital cultural interest, significantly less vital cultural interest

the second one of those should read 'prurient', obviously

Frankly, if you're going to do a song titled "Hanging Upside Down" or "Twistin' in the Wind", please just choose one per album.

This video was a gas, introduced by Dave Kendall, with the album cover tiled behind him:

It's just kind of uncomfortable the whole way through even though it's Byrne doing what he's always done best. And it's so early-'90s it hurts, apart from the anachronism in a furry day-glo suit jacket who is David Byrne. Kind of sad, you get the impression the early-'90s audience would have just been bemused by this robot-dancing 40-year-old man and his lithe funky sidekick, bald eagle philosophy lecturer on keyboards etc... Such a radical change in attitude between the mid-'80s and this period, I kind of end up feeling sorry for the poor guy.

tbh it seems like the problem is there isn't a radical change in attitude

that performance ends with him in a jumpsuit with flame decals playing skronky guitar on a housey version of 'i zimbra'

It's just amazing to see what I consider to be one of the coolest live performers doing essentially the same thing as he did in 1984 (different band but, y'know) in a way that makes it look so painfully uncool.. I guess this is the way with most pop stars who make it big and are at the forefront of their game - time catches up with them and they suddenly become irrelevant and have to spend a few years out in the wilderness before coming back to popularity. See Johnny Cash, Scott Walker etc...
