there was some discussion here, a while back, about a chili dog made with fritos available in NYC. i would like to get acquainted with that dog.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 24 July 2006 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

as well as you dawgs, of course.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 24 July 2006 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

that would be dash dogs, on rivington.

i mentioned asam laksa on an ile thread a long time ago. it has screwpine and tamarind and all sorts of crazy stuff in it.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 24 July 2006 21:41 (seventeen years ago) link

gbx (skowly), Monday, 24 July 2006 22:14 (seventeen years ago) link

d'oh! i thought we were pretty careful, but yeah - sounds like you may have.

(this is regarding a food allergy not food poisoning, btw. skyway rules.)

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 24 July 2006 22:19 (seventeen years ago) link

skyway does rule. slocki should go. get the oyster omelette and the something-something-mee, with the tofu and fish cakes and coconut/curry broth.

the eunuchs, Cassim and Mustafa, who guarded Abdur Ali's harem (orion), Monday, 24 July 2006 22:44 (seventeen years ago) link

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 22:58 (seventeen years ago) link

i am mad/sad i dont get to meet slocki

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I (personally) find Chowhound and eGullet to be better informed, more refined and cultured (less "oh they speak English here, praise the lord!"), not to mention similar to my tastes than any mainstream mags.

Not sure if you're willing to go the e-foodie route (as yes it is scary) but worth a peak at the very least. Vast amounts of information and the discussion stays current (chefs leaving, ownership/recipes changing), another advantage.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

aww it'll happen one day (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:19 (seventeen years ago) link

steve i'm totally into the e-foodie route, i use those sites a lot here. fuck, e-gullet people can be such bitches though... i tried to join once but they wanted me to write an ESSAY on why i deserved to be a member... no joke

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:20 (seventeen years ago) link

no wai

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:21 (seventeen years ago) link

wai dude. it's cuz i didn't want to pay but i wanted to respond to something someone (actually a critic from another paper) said about a piece i wrote!!

probably a good idea i didn't!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:25 (seventeen years ago) link

i read that ny magazine cheap eats link above and can attest that of the those i know, at least two of the 5 star cheap eats are pretty expensive. the 4 star picks are promising though.

fongoloid sangfroid (sanskrit), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:42 (seventeen years ago) link

ha probably.

hey did you ever get a chance to go to Queue de Cheval? Out of curiosity, how does it rate in the "Top X restaurants" polls?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:42 (seventeen years ago) link

i still have never been! although to be honest i think the consensus is that QDC isn't worth the mad mad cash

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:44 (seventeen years ago) link

*not expensive relative to le bernardin, of course. which i guess is what they were going for. xpost

fongoloid sangfroid (sanskrit), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Of the NY Cheap Eats list, I've been to three of the restaurants:
I rated Momofuku 3 stars (average food), with 1 star solely for being open after 11pm. It's not cheap either. If you're resourceful, you can do much better than this!
Shake Shack - it was pretty good. Not much of a line on the day I went. 4 stars.
Katz - it's a classic, 4 stars.

With Momofuku ranking so high, I'm immediately skeptical... Yikes.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:57 (seventeen years ago) link

the "cheap eats" designation is really questionable for a lot of their choices. steve's right - you'll do a lot better by checking chowhound, though the ny mag issue could be good as an address book.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 12:35 (seventeen years ago) link

get off the NY balls

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Ev, I hope you do! Will be awes.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:16 (seventeen years ago) link

cutty, what do you mean when you say "NY balls"?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:35 (seventeen years ago) link

it's like that new yorker cover, except the rest of the world begins at cutty's taint.

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:37 (seventeen years ago) link

LOL.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

so i should catch the train?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:08 (seventeen years ago) link

used to swear by Chowhound but (A) they have the worst website design ever and (B) too many restaurants are declared "over" / "fallen off" that I still think are good .... so I don't go there much anymore ...

Momofuku is expensive for ramen but cheap for as good a meal as that, IMO. Pork buns / chicken buns are legit.

dmr (Renard), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

chowhound has recently improved its website design... gah i hated those threaded threads.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 19:01 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i was thinking of hitting momofuku.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 19:01 (seventeen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 21 August 2006 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 21 August 2006 22:55 (seventeen years ago) link

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 01:10 (seventeen years ago) link

There are no virgins in NYC.
