yeh totally
guess it's the nomenclature that really throws it into vw territory

man I've been so obsessed with the last track on I'll Try Living Like This, legitimately think it's one of the greatest and most haunting things I've ever heard, then it turns out it's just a mash-up of two songs from Sonic-R. lol.

frogbs, Friday, 31 March 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link

Haha. Amazing track!

Feel like artists like V/vm and plunderphonics in general peaked too soon; they would florish under the vaporwave moniker.

I searched down Mello Mist, an album by dang Olsen that's not on Spotify. Nice as expected and brief. 8 tracks in like 28 minutes which could as well be a single telepath track.

I think some of Vektroid's releases are completely unaltered muzak tunes, not sampled, not looped, just the original song. I don't have a problem with this though

I know this is an old post but I've been thinking about this a bit. I've been listening to the 情報デスクVIRTUAL album quite a bit lately and I decided to listen to the originals (you can find most of them on whosampled.com). They aren't completely unaltered - everything seems to be pitched down 15% or so, there are a few loops, and most of the tracks are excerpts - but for the most part she's just sampling easy listening and New Age records. It isn't even muzak or infomercial stuff, it's like...John Tesh and David Sanborn. The whole thing is like a brilliant prank, attempting to get kids who hang out on /mu/ or reddit digging the same shit they'd make fun of their moms for listening to.

(and yes, I dig the album too)

beautiful

fairly new record from one half of death's dynamic shroud.wmv
https://dreamcatalogue.bandcamp.com/album/flight
"The follow up to 2012’s ‘Honeybee’ on Orange Milk, ‘Flight’ is a return to Webster’s progressive rock past with new ideals he has learned from his explorations in dds.wmv, taking the guitar-based experimentalism of the former and integrating the twisted audio manipulation of the latter to create something unique for the artist. Conceptually, it arrives from a similar place as ‘Honeybee’ too, in that HCMJ uses the music as an outlet for his own internal anxieties."

also new on dream catalogue, & very different to the above, ends with an almost wolfgang voigt esque movement
https://dreamcatalogue.bandcamp.com/album/integrating-clouds

away from dream - probs belongs on the future funk thread but i guess it goes down here too, hit vibes vibes obvs

Hosono's Coincidental Music is definitely a great example of proto-vapor. One of the cool things about following this scene is watching people discover this stuff organically who definitely wouldn't otherwise. I'm very amused that Pacific is starting to reach a new audience - not his best work, but still.

here's another version of that first track - better, in my opinion

I read that Washed Out's next record will also be called Mr Mellow and well, could it be an homage?

On the hyper/breakbeat tip is SAYOHIMEBOU (a la Machine Girl, Vaperror, Foodman)
http://music.businesscasual.biz/album/ok

honestly this stuff isn't really vaporwave, but uses its imagery, retro-futuristic fetish and *some* of the sound sources to make sugar rush IDM. and there's a Kool & the Gang cover!

new Nmesh album announced, this time on Orange Milk

now with fewer anthony fantano samples

clouds, Friday, 16 June 2017 14:25 (six years ago) link

hah I know most people hated it but the last track on Dream Sequins really cracked me up

frogbs, Friday, 16 June 2017 14:31 (six years ago) link

Alex Koenig seems like he'd be a good guy to crack open a cold one with. probably the only vaporwave musician I could say that about.

frogbs, Friday, 16 June 2017 14:31 (six years ago) link

it just went on for too long is all xp

love nmesh and am okay with him being indulgent and fucked up

calstars, Saturday, 15 July 2017 00:57 (six years ago) link

Have folks heard this?
https://dantemarsajeto.bandcamp.com/album/celebrating-digital-artifacts

weirdo plunder-pop, kind of post-Econo Jams hypnagogic...or something or other. If Future Funk is on the low stakes end for vaporwave, this is probably on the more ambitious end.
----

also, re: Hosono, check out that SAYOHIMEBOU I posted above as well, as it's kind of a 21st Century update to Cochin Moon

Dominique, Monday, 24 July 2017 17:21 (six years ago) link

New Nmesh album is out and it's pretty fuckin wild. It's not even really vaporwave, more like a plunderphonic EDM album (one track is Squarepusher-like drum n bass), but if you dig his other stuff you'll probably like this too. Not even done listening yet and I think it's his best one.

frogbs, Monday, 7 August 2017 02:23 (six years ago) link

sweet
i'm guessing it's the one up on orange milk? fell behind with them - popped open their bandcamp and there's about 10 records i'd missed
gonna be a good morning

nxd, Monday, 7 August 2017 08:19 (six years ago) link

btw thanks for the Sayohimebou rec, listening now and it's quite good. not sure I hear the similarity to Cochin Moon, it just sounds like a pure sugar rush to me

this may be of interest to some of you, apparently there's a legit Floral Shoppe vinyl you can get now:
https://oesbee.bandcamp.com/album/floral-shoppe

always kind of resented how this album overshadowed the rest of Vek's discography but whatever, I still bought one
