i got my finger caught in a rope that was attached to a dog going a million miles an hour. there is a bruise on the underside of the last joint (top joint?) and it's bumpy on the top side, and it's reasonably swollen. it's super sensitive and i can't really bend it bc it's super stiff and painful. this is just a tough-it-out situation, right? i need to use both hands for my job, and they take kind of a bashing day to day, so i'm kind of nervous how much pain this is gonna cause me.

just1n3, Monday, 28 April 2014 05:15 (nine years ago) link

Go see a doctor, you need X-rays. Might be an extensor tendon avulsion and/or fracture of the distal phalanx:

http://www.fpnotebook.com/ortho/Hand/ExtnsrTndnInjryAtThDpJnt.htm

Plasmon, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 02:05 (nine years ago) link

if it's a lot better today, is probably ok? i can move it pretty fine, very little remaining stiffness, although the bruising worsened yesterday and it's still quite sensitive (caught it a door this morning, that fucking hurt). it's also less lumpy-looking.

just1n3, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 03:38 (nine years ago) link

gbx, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 16:28 (nine years ago) link

Ok I wasn't going to bc I dread Dr visits, and my finger feels way better, but it's a weird colour and I figure 2 doctors saying the same thing might just be on to something.

ken you should get checked for auto-immune disorders!!!

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Friday, 2 May 2014 17:15 (nine years ago) link

Ate a bagel last week and within 3-4 hours I had a headache, felt tired and unable to focus mentally, like when I'm coming down with a flu, went home and went to bed and woke up sweaty, feverish. I'm used to bloating and stomach pain if I over-do wheat but I'm not used to that massive...auto-immune response? Running a temp like 16 hours later seems extreme. Ugh.

I should get insurance eventually.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 2 May 2014 17:21 (nine years ago) link

I keep meaning to do some kind of trial exclusion/auto-immune diet but when it comes down to it I'm just not sure if I can change my lifestyle that much for 30 days or more :\

(symptoms: weird skin problems, mainly, but also tired and hard to focus, being fat, and having digestive issues I don't think the internet needs to know about)

Any recommendations for good approaches?

the ghosts of dead pom-bears (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 2 May 2014 18:55 (nine years ago) link

I'm just not sure if I can change my lifestyle that much for 30 days or more :\

Tbh there's no way around it--if you get a positive result for any of your dietary testing, you're going to be changing your lifestyle for more than 30 days!! Also ime my reactions to the offending food items are getting worse, ie the damage to the stomach lining (if I understand that correctly) is cumulative, so while I can get away with a few pita chips or a croissant here or there, I have to make those rarities and can't let sandwiches, for inst, creep into my regular diet.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 2 May 2014 19:09 (nine years ago) link

do the reactions get worse because you avoid it on the reg?

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Saturday, 3 May 2014 01:13 (nine years ago) link

No exactly the opposite, I think? They get worse when I have too much wheat in a row, whereas if I've stayed off it for a while, I can cheat here and there. (I hate using the word "cheat" there but wth I can't be bothered to make up new nomenclature right now.)

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Saturday, 3 May 2014 18:24 (nine years ago) link

The damage I did to my ankles 10-15 years ago during a bout of hypomania-induced compulsive running is acting up, so I'm in a bit of pain right now.
