shooting & driving just feels like GTAIV to me. driving is noticeably twitchier tho, & not for the better

movement & shooting still feels like GTAIV. did they gimp the shooting from the car? feel like that was better in GTAIV but may be misremembering

lots of pop-up

thought the tennis was awful. imagine the golf & cycling are equally terrible

I already faked illness at work about 5 months ago, or I'd do it again tomorrow just to play this.

yeah the shooting from car thing has changed for the worse, weirdly. might improve - ie. lock-on quicker - once shooting stats are up. i really liked the tennis game, mega simple, almost pong-like but weirdly playable until it got super easy once you suss out the winning moves

My initial impressions are that it's insanely pretty and the early missions are much more enjoyable than in GTA IV. I've barely scratched the surface though.

treefell, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:29 (ten years ago) link

This is great. I killed a mountain lion! Red Dead Redemption is just about my favourite game, but this might topple it - especially if there's mountain lions to be killed. And the sounds you hear being out in the countryside at night - superbly atmospheric. I haven't done many missions yet because eh. I like all the "boring" stuff that people with no patience hate: exploring the world; driving, riding around and stuff.

I would like driving in these games more if you could turn traffic off (could do that in Saints Row 2 I think? it ruled)

Euler, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:50 (ten years ago) link

I may just have to buy this tonight. Was hoping to hold off until the weekend, but I'm weak.

Very much like IV but a lot nicer looking so far, and the characters all seem wicked cool this time out. Only been playing for about 2 and a half / 3 hours so I really haven't even started to get to grips with it. But holy shit is this map huge. Had one huge car chase along a freeway that went on for about 10 minutes, checked it on the map and it turned out I hadn't even changed direction at any point, just a straight line run

The atmospheric sound in this game is amazing!

The driving is the same for the most part but the HUD is much better.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 03:00 (ten years ago) link

My housemate busjacked a bus, drove it up a very very steep hill, then steered it off a cliff and bailed at the last moment. The sight of this bus careening endlessly down ravines, a la the Lisa Log from the Simpsons, had me in tears of laughter.

I'm hardly getting anywhere with this because I keep sitting gazing at the map screen so I can listen to that Tangerine Dream track.

And does the weather change? Not seen any rain yet.

These things are important to me. If there's no dynamic weather nor hidden items I'm going to be pretty cross.

on a down point, frame rate is pretty turd. Looking forward to pc release.

Came across an old antique tractor, couldn't believe it but it was drivable!

prop forward turned celebrity chef (Ste), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 10:16 (ten years ago) link

(to be fair I have been playing Just Cause 2 a great deal on pc, and it has a silky smooth frame rate so I could just be used to that)

and also I keep trying to grapple hook everywhere.

prop forward turned celebrity chef (Ste), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 10:19 (ten years ago) link

JC2 grapple hook & parachute should be incorporated in every game

shooting & driving just feels like GTAIV to me.

Noooooo. This has actually cast doubt on whether I try to pick this up any time soon... I found GTA IV damn near unplayable due to the way the cars drove. Like this syrupy no-man's-land between arcade driving games and simulations, but keeping all the bits that don't feel like real driving and all the bits that aren't fun.

CraigG, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 10:59 (ten years ago) link

I don't think its as 'syrupy' as gtaiv

jonah hill huh

Mordy , Wednesday, 18 September 2013 13:08 (ten years ago) link

I think the driving has slightly improved since IV, but the braking on motorbikes is too artificial. You can be going at full speed and come to an almost immediate stop, and turning is almost Tron lightcycle-like. Also I've dropped down mountains on a bike and it remains upright, just bouncing off the rocks and very easily controllable.

What about the radio? It seems sometimes that when I 'tune in' to a station the same track will be playing. Could be just coincidence as I haven't been playing that long, but I've heard "Still DRE" and Wham's "Everything She Wants" a hell of a lot. But it's still great to just race along the ocean highway at dusk with "Music Sounds Better With You" followed by "1 Thing" and "With Every Heartbeat" blaring from the car's radio.

Oh yeah, what is wrong with the characters in Blaine County? I stopped off at some small road side place and walked past this woman character who then said "I'm calling the police". I thought it was just some random dialogue, but next thing I know I'm on a one-star wanted level and I have to evade the fucking cops. Is it because I is Franklin? I didn't even hold up and rob the store (which is quite fun for a couple of times).

I couldn't stand bikes in GTAIV, awful control. They're improved for me in this one.

I found the muvva of all dump trucks too.

i don't think i have time to play a game like this (been working through the last Dishonored DLC for weeks now, 1/2 an hour at a time), but how's the Flying Lotus station?
