aside from the fact that there's only those 9 holes to play, it's just as deep and satisfying as playing Tiger Woods
It's pretty fun but I wouldn't go that far!

there are too many save points when you die during missions imo

i agree. in theory adding more was the right thing to do, but they have sometimes added too many, sometimes just in the wrong place. not a big deal, but occasionally noticeable.

After just under a week of solidly playing it I'm still discovering new bits and pieces. Who knew there was a racing track? Completely deserted though - as was the 'Vinewood Bowl - I wonder if these little unused places will feature in a mission, or are they just superfluous, but nice, detail?
― hewing to the status quo with great zealotry (DavidM), Sunday, 22 September 2013 18:35 (ten years ago) link
Yeah I think it's basically a certainty that it's getting robbed. What would be REALLY cool is if you rob it during a horse race.
― polyphonic, Sunday, 22 September 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link
paleto bay heist was p.good. game can feel like it's on rails at times during the missions but they give you just ~enough~ control to undermine that
FIB stealing all my cash is some bullshit though. when can I earn some serious money
― cozen, Sunday, 22 September 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link
dunno if i'm on early hype but this feels easily the best gta ever, and i loved iv (which i know people hated) but also all gtas. every element is so intensely there, and there's no real effort to get into it. personally i enjoy tatting trevor all over with "fuck cops" etc and then getting a huge beard/mullet/wraparounds, pluis beyond all this the screwing around is amazing. and the music is an incredible selection, whatever station you put on you're either hearing old classics or discovering stuff you never knew about.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Sunday, 22 September 2013 20:41 (ten years ago) link
This is my favourite GTA, definitely
But: my favourite GTA soundtrack was GTA 3. The off-track Moroder, the opera hits, the game-specific pop stuff and I'd never heard any of the other tracks anywhere else before or since. I dunno, I preferred it when the music contributed to the world-in-a-bottle rather than hearing Rihanna or Stardust on licence.
― flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 22 September 2013 20:56 (ten years ago) link
Oh yeah, I forgot to say. Before this came out I was hoping you would be able to ride horses in the countryside, a la RDR. Obviously not, and fair enough, but seeing the racing track makes me wish there had at least been a side game where you could enter a horse race.

just done the laslo mission and god the writing is so bad it's shameful. can see the cogs turning, "now we have to make this plot development happen so lets do it in the most simplistic 101 dumbfuck hackneyed way possible". also getting hugely bored of the exposition car journeys. on the other hand lamar is a great and genuinely funny character. also lold at that wade guy a bit, esp the "i just want to be wade" line
― NI, Sunday, 22 September 2013 21:28 (ten years ago) link
gotta say i quite like the trevor stuff, it's moronic but it has no pretensions otherwise. plus i got him a "fuck the cops" tattoo on his midriff and ran around killing people with just y-fronts and a camo waistcoat on, after getting him a nice mullet/massivebeard look going on.

when thinking fashion never forget ammu nation
and yeah it's impressive and great and everything but as far as a huge leap forward it's not that much different from gta4 in how it looks and works. story is more fun but that's not saying much. the difference from vice city/san andreas to gta4 was pretty huge, but this just feels a bit more polished than the last one.
― NI, Sunday, 22 September 2013 21:33 (ten years ago) link
dunno, for me the actual gameplay is just so much deeper. it really is way more inside my mind than other gtas.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Sunday, 22 September 2013 21:43 (ten years ago) link
i suppose there was a period of time before this game came out that you could pick up a ps3 for cheap, sigh
― 乒乓, Sunday, 22 September 2013 21:44 (ten years ago) link
I think its a huge leap from GTAIV, yeah visually it has a similar feel but they've improved so much. It's basically everything that was great about San Andreas with the pretty graphics from IV.

Echoing that Trevor is the most fun to play, feels the most appropriate for a gta game. I like to think of him as the gta III protagonist , a lot older, and with a voice.
― More Than a Century With the Polaris Emblem (calstars), Monday, 23 September 2013 02:20 (ten years ago) link
I haven't been paying attention to "bad writing" because I haven't played a game with good writing. I have laughed a couple times (mostly Lamar).
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 23 September 2013 02:24 (ten years ago) link
Also, realizing that Trevor is actually psycho and not just krazee has been real cool. Weird how all these American games over the last few years have done this thing where they make you realize the good guy protagonist is actually a crazy armed psycho

One that's meant to have a fairly high success rate sees you delete all game data, clear your system cache three times then delete marketplace data from storage system items before unplugging your console for three minutes. After this, you should install disc 1 and power off without inserting disc 2, then restart the console and install the second disc.
then stand on your head and hold your nose and drink water from the far side of the glass while clicking your heels together three times

hahaha
has anyone bought property? none of them seem that i've seen worth it at this point. like the Car Scrapyard is $275,000, and it provides a weekly income of "$150 per destroyed car". so...i guess if that means if I destroy 10 cars it'll pay $1500 a week? And then it'll take 183 "weeks" (275K/1.5K) to pay off the purchase? i guess i could take in 50 cars to bump the weekly income to $7500 a week. but still. that's a lot of time invested in the boring task of bringing cars to an out of the way property.
the others that i've seen seem similarly crappy. is there a good deal that i'm missing?

― goole, Monday, 23 September 2013 16:17 (ten years ago) link
the first heist brings in a good amount of money and it's not too far in if you concentrate on the story missions, so if you're in need of $$ you might want to just progress the story that far
― Z S, Monday, 23 September 2013 16:19 (ten years ago) link
Kinda surprised me actually, how much money that mission draws. I'm used to spending the large part of these games scraping along with a pistol and whatever I can collect from vanquished foes. Completed one heist mission and now my characters have got every weapon, all with a shit ton of ammo and maxed out accessories.
― Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Monday, 23 September 2013 16:22 (ten years ago) link
I blew all that money on bad investments so I'm still pissing around with pistols and bugger all ammo. :(
― JimD, Monday, 23 September 2013 17:07 (ten years ago) link
Don't make decisions based on money, but on what kind of missions you want to do. The drug running property in Sandy Shores was a no brainer. I don't care if it makes money or not. I want to fly around and distribute drugz.
― polyphonic, Monday, 23 September 2013 17:32 (ten years ago) link
Which is an argument against buying properties without missions or gameplay associated with them, I guess, but maybe you don't know that until you buy em? Do the pot stores just sit there and make money? That's kind of boring.
― polyphonic, Monday, 23 September 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link
I keep getting messages from the headshop that they're running low on supplies but how do I trigger the missions to rectify that?

only seminoteworthy thing i've done so far: did the ? mission with franklin that's a street race. i happened to be carless at the time, so grabbed some shitbox off the street and lost. i figured it would just let me retry, but i guess it didn't. later i rolled into a custom shop, and the same character (?) sassed me for losing!

― polyphonic, Monday, 23 September 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link
Noticed you can skip missions if you fail them. I haven't had to yet as this game is quite easy, but I think it's a good option. Not got the time for some repeat of that dickhead with the model planes from IV.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Monday, 23 September 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link
lol poly clearly there's quite a bit i haven't figured out
biggest mental reorientation for me is being able to do a quicksave off your phone. in retrospect, the regular rhythm of going back home to save was a strong part of getting to know the geography in SA & IV
― goole, Monday, 23 September 2013 20:48 (ten years ago) link
If you fail the air trafficking missions there's basically no checkpoint though and you have to do the drops again
I know this because I always do the drops fine then get confused about which of the three buttons I'm supposed to be holding down to land then make an immaculately straight touchdown on the landing strip at a velocity that blows the plane sky fucking high every time
