You can, but like the game, you're prone to wanted levels, etc.

When you appear online, usually your car is parked nearby, so it's easy just to run and grab that.

Every so often, I'll start a mission with some randos and we'll spawn next to my car. To them, it looks like any old car to steal, so they'll jump in. We're doing a mission anyway, so whatever, here are my keys, baby you can drive my car if you want.

(I assume theirs doesn't show up because they have, you know, GARAGES.)

pplains, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

are you not able to just steal cars off the street?

Unlike in story mode, the cops will never stop noticing high-level cars are stolen in online mode. I don't think you can even respray them. The spray dudes will say that the car is too hot or etc. But that doesn't mean you can't put a car in your garage and deal with it.

And there are limitations when it comes to stealing the primary cars of other online players. There is a setting that allows you to not even allow people to enter your car as a passenger.

Is there actually a way to buy/sell bawsaq from a PC? I can look at the stocks but i can't see any transaction buttons...

I don't believe you can.

When I was like halfway across the lake I thought "oh maybe this one is just a swimming one" but nope.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 23:30 (ten years ago) link

Is there something I'm not getting with the cycling section? Every time we went up steep hills I was overtaken even though I had full stamina.

Still won though.

Sounds like you guys are going for 100% completion ?!? Why else subject yourself to such finger torture?

I haven't even reached the infamous torture mission yet. I am going so slowly, but really enjoying it. THE GOLF! Oh boy do I love the golf.

Indeed

polyphonic, Thursday, 17 October 2013 16:09 (ten years ago) link

But you don't even need to do that mission to get 100%

polyphonic, Thursday, 17 October 2013 16:09 (ten years ago) link

really struggling with this game at the moment, starting from shipping container stacking through the whole tedious submarine stuff (so many many times i've trudged towards the yellow blip only to find i'm in a dead end and have to go all the way back and round) to that merriweather heist mission has been such little fun. not played it in a few days and have no urge to. gone back to non-stop cartoon fun of borderlands 2 and hanging on for the new batman.

having said that, the online stuff sounds truly great. gona be about a year before i get round to it though, will it still be worth it then or will everyone else in the gta universe be so far advanced i may as well not bother? not quite sure how the whole ranking system works.

loved this:

So I'm robbing this store clerk, right? Got the shotgun aimed right at him and he's emptying the register. I hear one of the other players say, hold up, there's a helicopter here. I think someone's in there. Dude comes in with his little cowboy hat on and stands right in front of the counter. I don't have a mic, so I can't ask him what he's up to. So I just assume the worst, that he's going to steal my money and helicopter. With that, I turn the shotgun and blow him back out the door. Everyone chattering goes nuts. I JUST GOT SHOT! WHO WAS THAT?

(would make a great youtube video)

i'm online now but i can't seem to really find anyone else and i'm not sure exactly what to do

and yeah, stuff like the shipping crates in the single-player is inexcusable, though i have been having fun with the rest of it

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 17 October 2013 22:51 (ten years ago) link

When I play online I spend basically no time in the free roam. I just go into my phone and pick the game mode I want to play (usually Races, Missions, or Survival).

Ha, apartments online are pretty cool. You can watch all the other players on Tv. One guy was getting chased by the cops in freemode. Another guy was in a death match, hiding in an alley.

pplains, Friday, 18 October 2013 05:13 (ten years ago) link

I don't know when I'm gonna get online, have a similar worry that by the time I do everyone else will have moved on. Spent an hour playing golf last night.

Defund Phil Collins (stevie), Friday, 18 October 2013 06:37 (ten years ago) link

My dilemma is: after finishing the main missions, should I go for 100% or go online?

I also want to find all the hidden letters and spaceship parts...50 of each I think. Not sure if those count towards 100%

Weird that people are fixating on that one crate mission thing, when it was over in about three minutes and I would have completely forgot about it if it wasn't for everyone on here banging on about it constantly.

it didn't bother me until my game froze in the middle and i had to restart the entire thing

Mordy , Friday, 18 October 2013 15:43 (ten years ago) link

it's partly because it amuses me how this billion dollar game with so much time and energy spent on it, probably the pinnacle of videogames making to date, has a mission that's so utterly shit. also it sums up a lot of what's bad about gta5 - sticking tedious shit in for the sake of the bloated 'story', boring, unnecessary, etc.

and like i said above, when it started up i was grinding my teeth appalled at what i was being asked to do, skimmed the instructions, rushed it and ended up spending 20 mins+ redoing it it and by jove with god as my witness that gives me the right to whinge about it on the internet

i'm delighted for everyone involved that this exists. complete price history for every stock on the market is fantastic devotion to detail

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Friday, 18 October 2013 21:18 (ten years ago) link

yeah, getting the google finance api thing to work for something whose prices are completely artificial is some funny shit.

apparently the in-game graphs are totally divorced from displayed price. completely meaningless.

goole, Friday, 18 October 2013 21:31 (ten years ago) link

the overall crate mission was a quite long and boring possibly deliberately so it's still an amazing game but that mission was definitely principally boring enough that it is natural that some people have remarked on it

like it was quite funny how long and boring it was but it was still long and boring, it was like the middle bit of a stewart lee bit but for videogames

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 18 October 2013 21:39 (ten years ago) link

It wasn't that long!

pplains, Friday, 18 October 2013 21:47 (ten years ago) link

obviously meant to be some 'atmospheric' busywork while trevor grills that weakling dude about the port. which is only entertaining if that v/o is hilaaarious and it's not really.

it could have been a minigame where you slap that guy around or like shoot valuables in his house to get him to talk about his job. just imagine.

goole, Friday, 18 October 2013 21:47 (ten years ago) link

many many xposts, but...

Honestly for me the one crate mission thing really is just the exclamation point on the worst movement of the entire game mechanics wise and especially plotwise. Pretty much everything from when Trevor arrives in Los Santos and meets the cousin Floyd until that plotline kinda wraps up is just stupid and shitty. I think this is when I took the biggest break from the game too (there was a solid 1-2 weeks I let the game 'cool off' before picking it up and finishing it). Everything that was wrong with every other GTA game since 3 was on display with any mission involving Floyd. The torture scene and every Floyd mission. Just unempathetic, poorly-planned, poorly-written, poorly-implemented garbage.

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Friday, 18 October 2013 21:48 (ten years ago) link

i kind of enjoyed that mission! idk, you got a nice view of the city

i was expecting some violence to break out where i had to mash one of those containers into a bunch of dudes or something, but, nope.

goole, Friday, 18 October 2013 21:49 (ten years ago) link

To be honest, that's where I'm at right now in the game. Just got done with the docks. Still got that paparazzi guy on Franklin's map. Would just as soon go on a 10-wave hillbilly killin' mission online.

pplains, Friday, 18 October 2013 21:50 (ten years ago) link

yeah the pap missions are the worst imo... also the minute men ones later in the game

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 October 2013 21:50 (ten years ago) link

there wasn't even the joke of you getting some inflated union paycheck for 25 mins work, which i was also kind of expecting

xps

yeah the use of trevor's homicidal psychosis for plot purposes is really lazy. but you know, 'satire' right.

goole, Friday, 18 October 2013 21:52 (ten years ago) link

At least Minutemen and Paparazzi you can do one mission here and there while progressing with the rest of the game. The Floyd section is necessary to continue playing. And it is maybe the utter nadir of Rockstar's work. Worse than Brucie Kibbutz parts of GTA IV.

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Friday, 18 October 2013 22:34 (ten years ago) link

what about the car-towing ones... is there any reason why i would want to do those

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 18 October 2013 23:05 (ten years ago) link

so when you get the army helicopter, you'll know how to do this:

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/193dbcvmeyk6egif/original.gif

pplains, Friday, 18 October 2013 23:16 (ten years ago) link

oh god the car towing missions, this game really is jampacked with anti-fun (every time i have to dick around with the phone or go on the internet i die a bit inside). and like will. m so perfectly put, a huge % of the writing is just pissweak unamusing crap. but at the same time i know it's not a 'bad game' as such, they've just gone overboard - around a third of it should be edited out to leave a slick great game.

also worth noting - that incredible feeling of disappointment when you complete some epic mission to the best of your abilities and it flashes up with 'bronze' and a bunch of unticked boxes. superfun!

NI, Saturday, 19 October 2013 02:53 (ten years ago) link

Some of you guys should definitely not play Euro Truck Simulator.

one of the things i just dont understand is "exiting" a web page and having to go back through a bunch of unloaded pages, why add that extra time waste to an already huge game
