Or none of the above

They seemed expensive last time I looked

Everything's expensive. I thought the steam machines were cool when they came out but a good gaming laptop seems more useful plus I could pack it up on long trips. Of course I haven't played a game on PC in years and years. It just seems like there's so much good stuff now, though!

the way it was done when i was into pc games is you choose the game you wanted to play and build a machine/buy a laptop that can run that smoothly
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Friday, 22 July 2016 23:30 (seven years ago) link
I want to play all the games on Steam that you guys talk about on the other threads
― El Tomboto, Saturday, 23 July 2016 00:40 (seven years ago) link
don't bother with a steam machine. those things are enormous flops.
― big rave warrior (rushomancy), Saturday, 23 July 2016 00:43 (seven years ago) link
you can get a laptop with a card that will run most shit in fine res for about $1k or less
― calstars, Saturday, 23 July 2016 01:05 (seven years ago) link
like, teraflops or just gigaflops
LOL
― El Tomboto, Saturday, 23 July 2016 02:28 (seven years ago) link
Yeah sorry I meant the Steam Machines seem overpriced, I'd go with a laptop cos it's probably not much different money-wise and obviously more functionality
― Guangchang, thank you man (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 23 July 2016 06:21 (seven years ago) link
Gaming laptop probably more useful and better overallPoint in favor of the Steam Machine (or any desktop really) is better bang for your buck regarding GPU/RAM/CPU etc.
― Nhex, Saturday, 23 July 2016 06:42 (seven years ago) link
yeah gaming desktop is my answer.

if you're interested mainly in steamy indie stuff you don't even need a 'gaming' laptop, mb

otoh i don't even know what a steam machine is so i should stay out of this thread
― the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Saturday, 23 July 2016 07:19 (seven years ago) link
gaming desktops seem somehow overwrought and too serious for me
― El Tomboto, Saturday, 23 July 2016 15:27 (seven years ago) link
I have one of those enormous Acer gaming laptops, it runs everything smoothly on low to medium settings. You really need a desktop if you care about playing AAA games on high settings, the laptop video cards just arent there performance wise, but most games look fine on low these days, and you barely even notice the difference in indie games or games with stylized graphics e.g. overwatch

Thanks. I also feel like if I got a desktop rig I would feel compelled to get some kind of ginormous 4K display which would mean a dedicated desk setup which would mean - ugh. No. I'm not that guy.

go with your feelings imo. Nothing wrong with that guy.

laptops are expensive so if you need your purchase to align w a preexisting brand you could always think of yrself as frugal

maybe u want to get a macbook so u can wait w/ baited breath alongside the rest of us for them to port games 5 years after the fact (and never get to play an ANNO or Capcom game).
― Mordy, Monday, 1 August 2016 20:44 (seven years ago) link
jokes on you ANNO games can run on MacBook w minimal futzing some shit called wine I think but it works I got it to work then I never had time to play it rip
― droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 1 August 2016 20:51 (seven years ago) link
no shit? i know about wine but didn't realize ANNO works smoothly with it. i've wanted to play 2070 for a while. well actually i did but i think the desire evaporated during the wait. but at some pt in history i really wanted to.
― Mordy, Monday, 1 August 2016 20:53 (seven years ago) link

― the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Saturday, 6 August 2016 04:36 (seven years ago) link

agree with thomp, at least with the kind of Steam games i'm usually interested in. i have a 2014 macbook pro and it handles pretty much everything.
