Amiga Emulator question

Are there any Amiga emulators out there that are clever enough to let me use the original Amigal floppy disk games? Or is this technically barmy to even consider.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 09:55 (seventeen years ago) link

If I remember rightly, the Amiga discs are in some kind of propritary format. This may be total bull, but I seem to remember suggestions that you needed special hardware (such as an original amiga disk drive via come kind of connector to your PC), or that you have to transfer info from your amiga to your PC via networking or something...

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 10:07 (seventeen years ago) link

cheers. an amiga hard drive might not be too hard to get hold of i spose.

i just have so many old disks and want to play them. the actual emulator is crap and buggy and there are hardly any games available for it.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 10:26 (seventeen years ago) link

"amiga disk drive" even

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 10:27 (seventeen years ago) link

More information, including actual facts etc, Here

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 10:41 (seventeen years ago) link

wow tons of info. cheers!

it doesn't sound hopeful though does it. most of my disks will have a copy protection on them anyway, so that's that shot.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 11:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Are the latest versions of the Amiga emulator any use?
I played around with one about 4,5 years ago and it was distinctly unstable.
Mind you it would probably be easier to just pull my old A1200 out of the cupboard.

Greig (treefell), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 12:32 (seventeen years ago) link

No idea. Not tried one for a while either. I seem to recall playing 'Jetstrike' on an Emulator but having to give up cos it got to a password protected bit. But it was playing all right til then. That was probably with win UAE.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 12:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I had an Amiga emulator years ago. Ran most games great but most of them are pretty crap nowadays.

Darramouss ftw! (Darramouss ftw), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 20:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Amiga games S/D then. Er... er... memory failure... c'mon help me get nostalgic here.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I tried to play Knightmare on an Amiga Emulator the other week, but I couldn't be bothered with all the tweaking just to get the thing to run. It's not very lazy user friendly.

Starray - the best Defender clone ever
Starglider 2
Damocles
Tanx - btw, does anyone know of a pc version? It's the game where you set your gun trajectories to shoot over crazy landscapes and try to destroy each others tanks
Hunter
Midwinter
Robocod
Lotus Esprit 2
kick off 2

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 27 July 2006 07:52 (seventeen years ago) link

For tanks, try and get ahold of Scorched Earth. pretty much the best Tanks-style game I ever played. but yeah, Tanks was good. Also Seek:

Moonstone
No Second Prize
Future Wars
Operation Stealth
Gravity Power
Alien Breed
Base Jumpers
Chaos Engine
Speedball 2

Magic Pockets!
Carrier Command
Turrican
Blood Money
TV sports football
Supercars
Ultima VI or was it VII?, (and this has just reminded me of my dream last night - of owning some computer system which had access to every game on any system ever made, ever!)

Can't believe I forgot about Syndicate. So much fun to use the cheats, give all your guys top armour and missile launcher/Miniguns then just terrorise the baddies, leaving the cities burning as you 'faught crime'.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:04 (seventeen years ago) link

oh yes Syndicate, fabulous game. and also the Pinball series. I still have those.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

it might be easier, and inexpensive, to just go and buy an old a500 off ebay.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I lvoed this one game that took place on some sort of spaceship in outer space. You were a small robot that looked kind of like a black, evil UAV thing. You could shoot these shitty looking sparks/sparkles at the hordes of robots who had it in for you, with a twist-- you could take over their bodies and become their head! Does this ring any bells, anyone?

Will M. (Will M.), Friday, 28 July 2006 03:11 (seventeen years ago) link

A long shot, but it wasn't Wizball was it? I don't remember being able to take over peoples bodies, but he was a pretty evil lookin ball.

Robocop3

Parasol Stars

cool about the carrier command remake, i hope the guy finishes it.
But if he hasn't got the physics and general control feel the same i could be disappointed.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 28 July 2006 08:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I always hated it when you had sent out all your planes on auto pilot and they would be circling around a waypoint whilst you did something with the tanks, then the mesage would pop up that a plane had crashed, quickly followed by 3 more messages and you realise that you didn't give the planes the extra fuel tanks.

Merrini (Mezza), Friday, 28 July 2006 09:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I seem to remember liking the Spectrum 128K version of Carrier Command better than the Amiga one, even with the crap graphics, as you didn't have to wait so long when travelling. Or am I remembering that wrong?

Greig (treefell), Friday, 28 July 2006 09:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I just remembered a game called Base Jumpers. I only ever had a demo version, which was one level, but I've got to look up a full version.

Weirdly, rather than frustrating I found watching someone else's recorded game movements quite satisfying. Reminded me of old Gamesmasters on TV - more exciting and entertaining to watch than perhaps they should've been.

Yeah Gamesmaster was compulsory viewing. Mainly to see what shambolic bully magnet crawled out in front of the cameras this week and struggled to stammer out his own name to Dominic Diamond/Bloke out of Press gang.

can anyone remember a game in which you played this little space explorer dude tumbling around some planet in zero gravity? i used to spend hours gta style finding new ways of blowing myself up. everything just floated serenely. i think it was a metroid style thing, but all the sprites were tiny. i can't remember any enemies present. it was just fun 2 blow yourself up.

rio natsume, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago) link

This thread jsut reminded me of how bad I need to find and emulate Paradroid 90. See also: weird adventure/action hybrid game "Pandora" involving... killing peopel on a space ship (although I think you could beat it without killing)

Will M., Monday, 26 February 2007 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I think rio's talking about Exile.

treefell, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

i've finally got an emulated version of Carrier Command. I am very happy.

Ste, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 10:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm enjoying IK+ right now, although I'm having problems doing the 'gut punch', why can't I do it?

My Amiga emulator came with an ST emu as well, I didn't realise how shitty the sound was on an ST.

Ste, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 09:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I remember it being 'down' crouch, and then move forward. But the computer players (quite rightly) aren't giving me a minutes peace to try and practice it.

And oh that lovely bouncing ball bonus level. Is that the most satisfying sub game ever?

Ste, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 10:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I find it odd that I didn't see anyone suggest using a P2P client to LEGALLY download all the games in your cupboard.

Windy G Moisture, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 13:36 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, but my question was more related to 'how do i use my original amiga disks?'. but hey ho, i have hundreds of games now all on my xbox!

and the 'gut punch' is actually crouch + back, not forward. Still a bit tricky to pull off with the xbox controller. my usb Comp pro joystick doesn't seem to work with it.

Ste, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:34 (seventeen years ago) link

*blink*
Why use the discs if you have the data in a more convenient and stable format?

Windy G Moisture, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Also any working amiga isworth a decent price and rising in value.
Wish I'd bought one when they were cheapish.

Windy G Moisture, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Why use the discs if you have the data in a more convenient and stable format?

because any emulator i've used on my pc has been shit, and never works properly.

i was going to get one too, but now i've given all the disks away.

Ste, Thursday, 1 March 2007 10:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm totally baffled by all the Paradroid 90 love, I found it incredibly disappointing compared to the original C64 game which remains one of my favorite of all time.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 1 March 2007 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Ste seconded, has anybody actually played a satisfying Amiga emu?

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:03 (seventeen years ago) link

because any emulator i've used on my pc has been shit, and never works properly.
But why would the discs help you? The only way to use the data on them with a modern PC is to use an emulator.
Are you trying to confuse me now?

Windy G Moisture, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Don't bother with WinUAE, it's far too fiddly and temperamental.
Try Winfellow instead: http://fellow.sourceforge.net/new_version/index.php

It might not be as advanced, but all the games I tried on it ran perfectly well.

Also, you might want to look here for games.

Jeff Leopard, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:44 (seventeen years ago) link

But why would the discs help you?

the problems i've had with emu's seems to be down to the game roms, or so it seems, some work some don't. My favourite ones never worked properly there were always some sound or graphical bugs. I just thought having the proper disk and the software to run it, it would be better or least worth a try.

that looks interesting Jeff

Ste, Friday, 2 March 2007 09:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I've got WinUAE running with no major problems so far. Slowly working my way through all the games I can remember. Paradroid 90 = quite fun but gameplay a bit limited, gets boring after a while (=every retro game ever, I know). Killing Game Show - replay feature is great but seems a bit soulless in retrospect, a bit too polished. Turrican - now that's what I'm talkin' about! "WELcome to TURRican AH HA HA Ha ha!" The music! The awesome rotatey laser! The HUGE levels! (iirc, I haven't got very far this time around - it's hard!)

And then there's Virus. OMG still best game ever. I might just play this for weeks. IT'S LIKE THRUST BUT IN 3D HOW COULD THAT NOT BE FANTASTIC

ledge, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

yes Turrican, brilliant shooter. I got into the second one recently I think, actually a retro game that I found hard to put down. I keep forgetting about the rotary laser and the fact I can turn into a spinning razor jobby.

Still haven't got round to checking out even half my roms, gibber.

Ste, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

However according to Turrican makers the continue option means "continue... from the very beginning! No matter how far you have already got!" which makes me sad.

SHADOW OF THE BEAST

rio natsume, Thursday, 15 March 2007 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I've just tried it! INFURIATING! So I'm strolling along and I see a well with a giant red flashing IN sign. So I go in, and wait for a tedious cutscene message, then descend a ladder. But at the bottom, I can't seem to get off the ladder, let alone go through the door at the bottom. Now of course I'm not quite sure if the controller is mapping everything properly so I spend a few minutes hitting every controller button, mouse button, and key on the keyboard, several times over, all to no avail. Eventually I give up and ascend the ladder, to be greeted at the top by another tedious cutscene message saying "perhaps a key would have been helpful". THANKS A BUNCH.

Then I died shortly after. Still, great music, lovely parallax scrolling (ah those were the days), perhaps I'll give it another go.

ledge, Thursday, 15 March 2007 19:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Later... I enter a castle - this involves the inevitable cutscene message and a disc swap. Once in there I instantly discover that I need a torch so I have to go outside - message, swap discs - get torch, then go right back in - message, swap discs again.

Really, it's woeful. Repetitive and ridiculously hard, you're constantly assaulted by a an array of extremely two-dimensional looking beasties all with a pretty simple plan of attack - they run at you. Your wimpy attack and the fact that they come at you from all sides means collisions are often unavoidable and death inevitable. And if you make it to the point where the gameplay gets more exciting than RUN RIGHT, and you fail to pick up a key or spanner or something, you stand a chance of getting trapped with no way forward or back.

But I've found a faq, and I am inwincible! I'm gonna make it to the end!

are amiga emulators any better these days? i bet copyright laws wouldn't allow it but a bumper pack of the best amiga games + supereasy 'grandma-friendly' amiga emulator program would surely make big bucks and make many people happy.

just a quick flick through this thread brought back a whole host of memories: syndicate! silly putty! wizkid! pinball dreams! but i've been through the nightmare of winuae before and fucked if i'm doing that again

Hard. Played as a forward of course. On the rare occasion somebody passed me the ball it was really weak and I'd just mess it up anyway.

Struggling to understand what the hell I saw in this game, I remember playing it for ever, it's just torture.

Ever since I read this post about Amiga Disk Format firmware for a USB/Floppy emulator, I've been thinking about getting an Amiga and giving it a shot. Well, I made a reckless eBay purchase yesterday, and will soon have an Amiga 1200 (which I coveted so much when I had an Amiga 600 as a youngster).
