Nintendo Power -- Once great, then irrelevant, now great again?

It suddenly strikes me that Nintendo Power might be worth taking a look at again, inasmuch as any paper-based games info source is nowadays. I remember the days of yore, when you got fold-out zelda maps & posters, free games incl. with renewing a subscription(Dragon Quest!), etc.

Then the 90s arrived and the mag was lost in a sea of irrelevance, going on about how Mode 7 could beat Blast Processing any day of the week.

Now that Nintendo once again has the (arguably) best consoles, is this mag worth reading again?

Talk about NP, then and now, in this thread.

This thread sparked by seeing this cover:

Man, were they ever promoting the sit out of Dragon Quest/Warrior. Seeing the DQ/W issue of Nintendo Power in 1st grade made me absolutely obsessed with getting the game, hassling my parents every day and drawing drakmages on the margins of my homework assignments. I sure haven't read it since, but I did end up getting Dragon Warrior and spending probably 600 hours of my life with it, so it all worked out OK.

Abbott, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 04:28 (seventeen years ago) link

wait, wasn't final fantasy I also a giveaway?

kingfish, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 05:01 (seventeen years ago) link

One of the final fantasy's was, I think.
Waiting with excitement for my first freebie issue!

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Dragon Warrior was the first NES game I had, other then Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, courtesy of Nintendo Power. It also came with a sweet little players guide that told you things you'd never be able to figure out otherwise. For example, that one secret item, maybe a ring or something, that you could only get by searching in the middle of the poison swamp on the overmap. In fact, I think that was the only time in the entire game that the search command actually worked, on the overmap. Anyways.

Z S, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 22:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Ultima for the NES (a.k.a Ultima III) was like that; 65,536 squares to travel thru, only one had something to search on.

kingfish, Thursday, 15 March 2007 00:03 (seventeen years ago) link

That was officially the hardest game I've ever beaten. Pre-internet, too!

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 15 March 2007 01:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think I've ever played an RPG where the search function worked. Useless & disappointing.

Abbott, Thursday, 15 March 2007 20:29 (seventeen years ago) link

four months pass...

I recently read my free copies I received for registering games. I liked how good-natured it is towards games on non-Nintendo systems, giving kind words to Okami and Castlevania SOTN among others. But I suspect it's only because Nintendo is dominating the markets so much that they aren't worried about the competition.

abanana, Saturday, 11 August 2007 03:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow, I don't remember them even acknowledging the existence of other consoles back the early 90s.

I think this was in the letter columns

kingfish, Saturday, 11 August 2007 04:04 (sixteen years ago) link

the thing that strikes me about that cover upthread is that it's not shitty 3d CG like the covers were when the N64 hit the market

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 11 August 2007 19:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha the very first issue of NP was like a clay model of SMB2, I held on to it for years, wish I still had it. I had the first six or seven years of NP. There were also bad covers with real people dressed up as Link and Simon Belmont and shit. Those were the days.

i also had the first six years of Nintendo power. Are they all online anywhere?

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 11 August 2007 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I've just found these covers here and there. The only really cool thing about those old ones were complete maps for things like Metroid and Metal Gear.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 11 August 2007 22:11 (sixteen years ago) link

And Kid Icarus. I've never even played Kid Icarus, but I remember staring at the maps in NP for hours on end, mentally working my way through the levels.

Are Nintendo in any danger of bankruptcy? They just took all 10 slots in the Japanese handheld sales chart!

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:57 (eleven years ago) link

it's hard for me to see a future for Nintendo like its past, since the Wii HD or whatever it's called looks like a loser out of the gate, & the 3DS seems like the wrong handheld at this time; whether those spell bankrupcy I dunno, depends on their financial condition & skills, but short of licensing Mario to Apple they look like they might get Sega-ed.

Euler, Thursday, 23 August 2012 14:00 (eleven years ago) link

haha I guess licensing Mario to Apple would be being Sega-ed.

Hah, sorry I don't keep much track of the industry (the all-10-positions was the result of some frantic Googling). I know they don't get a lot of respect, and that the Wii is no longer outselling the PS3 and 360 combined.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 24 August 2012 08:37 (eleven years ago) link

The WiiU will probably sell a trillion units.

Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 11:31 (eleven years ago) link

Sony are the ones currently in trouble financially, 3DS is doing ok, really unconvinced by WiiU myself though.

zappi, Friday, 24 August 2012 11:59 (eleven years ago) link

Lego City Undercover(nee Stories) looks cool, but at this point, I'm wondering if I should just pick up a Gamecube and load up on select cheap games, as the system was good for those.

Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Friday, 24 August 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

Wii can run Gamecube games though, right? So it might be a better buy.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

Wii can run Gamecube games, Wii U won't I think (but idk probably will have them as downloadable Virtual Console titles?)

"Pffft" --buddha (silby), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:38 (eleven years ago) link

Get the Wii just because it's hard and expensive to get video component out cables for the GameCube.

BUT! the later price cut Wii models don't have GC backwards compatibility, so watch out for that. They won't have the controller ports.

Nhex, Friday, 24 August 2012 19:08 (eleven years ago) link

wow - I didn't know they dropped gamecube support... horrible.

This is sort of sad to me, but yeah I only subscribed up until N64 years and then I just pretty much never read a videogame magazine again. It's funny how many comments on various sites are "Who care this is just a 30-page ad from Nintendo WAKE UP SHEEPLE" when really what print magazine isn't basically an advertisement.

all video game mags are atrocious hack jobs but Nintendo Power at least was not also written with a dudebro core gamer male-gazey house style. I think all my back issues from my various subscription eras have been sold or disposed, alas.
