trucks and suvs? the fuck is the point of that. hope it's fun but the experience in GT4 says NO.

rollover? YES.

400 cars? eh let's see if that's not 40 identical tuner skylines, etc

100 tracks? GREAT. i'm so fucking sick of tsukuba. i never want to drive on tsukuba again. GT overused the motherfucker!! you think if turn 10 hates them they'd do something different

Huge 9/10 Eurogamer review...
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/forza-motorsport-3-review

"Forza 2's handling model offered tremendous depth and satisfying heft, but on the surface, it was dry, a tad uninviting. With Forza 3, Turn 10 has managed something that not even GT creators Polyphony or simulation experts SimBin has done to date; loosen the handling, lighten it, add a flick of tail-happy PGR flair, a deliciously dynamic and supple relationship between car and road, and all without sacrificing one iota of sim credibility. In simple terms, it's kept the depth, but ladled on raw feel. It's a masterpiece."

"the boasts of lavish content - 400 cars and 100 tracks - ring a little hollow when you realise how much of it has been recycled from Forza 2. You will very often experience a strong sense of deja vu as you take the same car round the same track that you did two years ago."

"Finally, and most controversially, there is the look of the game. You would expect Forza 3 to boast staggeringly faithful and detailed car models, and it does, no doubt. But despite that, it's graphically sterile and bland, with few effects, poor environmental detail, and a relatively basic in-car view. In a side-by-side comparison with GRID or the thrilling showboating of Need for Speed: SHIFT, Forza 3 will leave you cold."

"Turn 10 has sacrificed flash for a faultless 60 frames a second, and understood that in simulation, what you feel is far more important than what you see. It has diverted all of the 360's resources to giving you the smoothest, most believable, most physically rewarding drive you've ever had."

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:51 (fourteen years ago) link

this doesn't seem like much of a criticism tbh, i had the same feeling going from GT4 to FM2 anyway. driving the same car on the same track ought to seem like the same thing if both purport to be sims, right? i'm disappointed by the bland car interiors/animations but i wasn't planning on driving that way much anyway.

can't wait! i might self-punish to get some more achievements knocked off in 2 while waiting for a used copy...

9 from Edge too...
http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/review-forza-3

"Grid still offers the most on-track excitement (and better car damage), and the forthcoming GT5 already looks graphically superior, but anyone looking for the most rewarding console driving experience to date has found their ride. Where does the genre go from here?"

goole - I got the game tonight and have put in a couple of hours. The amount of content here is pretty fucking overwhelming! Besides having to install the second discs content (about 2 gig) the game comes with a code to download another half gig of tracks and cars. It does feel like a big step up from Forza 2, particularly in terms of presentation, though I'm not sold on the calender mode (I don't understand it yet). You can also do free races or time trials with any car in the game and on any track, right from the start, as near as I can tell. Plus multiplayer. I feel like there's a good year's worth of content here if one were to play the game every day. It's crazy!

cialis morissette (goole), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 20:41 (fourteen years ago) link

polyphonic - I love the driving pretty much. Shift is more acrade-style fun, while Forza is really a true sim and cars behave pretty much like cars. Definitely if you found the demo boring, Forza isn't for you as the demo is a very good representation of the kinds of experiences you can have in the game. It's a much more technical game. I enjoy both games, but really appreciate the more precise, more realistic control of Forza.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 20:55 (fourteen years ago) link

It's weird there's an achievement for doing a race with the in-car cockpit view. I guess they really want people to try out that view?

The kinks they added into the New York track are annoying - even the AI drivers rarely make it thru without a few crashes!

Day two of loving the game though! Had a few crazy high speed ring R1 races online. Supposedly they're going to add some lower tier stuff into the online hopper later. Don't know why they aren't in there to start - seems like you'd want to ease people into racing online, not start right out with the crazy, difficult to control cars.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 05:28 (fourteen years ago) link

this is fairly amazing. my initial reaction is that everything is one full step better that FM2: it looks better, sounds better, drives better, the menu interface is better, the details make more sense, it's much more fun

things i noticed right out the gate:

the car classes are tighter, so the AI field is more of a pack. i guess it starts you at the back all the time now? that's kind of a pain. though it makes racing more important than winning -- you get bonus credits for completing a series, not just winning it. they tried really hard to make it less of a grind, so far so good. i've had fun scraping my way into 4th place. it's hard in a fun, exciting way, it's like they flipped the tedium switch to "off".

i dunno if its the lighting or increased detail or what but it feels much faster. in FM2 you had to get up into the S or R level before it started to feel like you had some speed, not here.

you get much bigger bonuses for upping the difficulty level, awesome.

wait, there's a clutch now?

i'm glad the home region thing was scrapped. fewer prize cars, too; unless i'm a dunce i don't think winning a series gives you a car? i guess they want you to spend more time and money buying your own, fine with me.

did you notice there are some nascar type cars, with the faring completely blank? those creeped out manga painter dudes must be happy

cialis morissette (goole), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:02 (fourteen years ago) link

You get a gift car when you win (or maybe complete?) a championship. I've yet to have to buy a car, 'cause I'm always winning whatever level car I need next, it seems like. I've bought a few just to try them out though (so many cars!).

It seems like leveling up goes faster? Or maybe I'm just leveling up faster because I'm playing assist free (except for ABS) and have gotten better at racing? Unlike the last game, I've learned my lesson and am not over-upgrading my cars. The races are tight, but I'm winning my fair share (usually on the last corner though, instead of on the first).

The game has great implementation of damage. I've definitely fucked up a few cars, but it feels fair, and is pretty funny when you limp across the finish line, smoke pouring from the back of your car, sounding like a model-T ready to explode.

I think the faster feeling may come from the new tracks, all which seem tighter and more curvy - a couple of them are really nice to look at too (the one on the coast, the Japanese track).

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

got the mustang awarded to me last night (think it was that anyway, a ford shelby muscle car, didn't look like a cobra, but I was a bit frazzled), immediately upgraded it and went for the muscle car series. That car is really *really* hard to drive. Love the feel of the Impreza though, you can feel *just* where the grip is about to go when slinging it round a corner.

wait, that was me :(

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 29 October 2009 04:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Had a couple more good online races last night, but then had a couple of multiplayer experiences that soured me on the game a little. I forgot that one of the reasons I didn't play a bunch of Forza 2 online is that the Forza "community" sucks. I don't knw why, but I got vote kicked from two games in a row without even being able to drive a lap (maybe because I didn't have a mike? but fuck that, I wanna race, not chat with some random xbox live fucks. It couldn't be that they kicked me because I was "beginner" class on a game that has been out for two days, could it?). It's especially annoying beause there are surprisingly few races going on online (less than 1,000 players?), so I you get stuck in a hopper with a race in progress, wait five+ minutes for it to end, then get vote kicked as soon as the racers finally make it back into the lobby? Fun times!

It's annoying too that still the lowest class race you can get into is an A class. I wanna race mini coopers too sometimes dammit!

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:22 (fourteen years ago) link

is that true about the A class minimum?? that's fucked. i hope it's just cos of the small online community at the moment -- my guess is everyone is bashing thru the single player to get hot cars.

but, yeah, i feel u, i raced online maybe 5 times and it never really did it for me.

goole, Thursday, 29 October 2009 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

There was something else weird too - in some of the races online I did, people had different / better cars that I couldn't select? Like the best car I could select was rated A595 while others had A600 (models that didn't show up in my select screen). Is that because they were further along in single player or was that because they had paid extra for the "limited edition?" Or is there some other reason? Either way it's fucked up that the playing field isn't even - racing is hard enough already.

Yeah, I think I'll stick to single player, and get my online fix out of Dirt 2 and NFS: Shift (both of which have been pretty much only good experiences online).

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 29 October 2009 16:16 (fourteen years ago) link

can't you race online with a car out of your own garage? that would explain dudes with an even 600

goole, Thursday, 29 October 2009 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

That's possible. For a game that looks straight-forward, it's actually surprisingly confusing (for instance, I only just discovered last night the dedicated time trial modes (where everybody uses the same car). It's weird that there are free play time trials and dedicated time trials. Also the 10,000 different leaderboards filled with unexplained symbols and weird, counter-intuitive metrics...

JimD, Friday, 30 October 2009 15:40 (fourteen years ago) link

http://assets.vg247.com/current//2009/10/IMG_4208.jpg

It's two track packs and ten cars, so yeah, if you bought a new copy and it didn't have the download card, might be worth tracking down (though obviously there's plenty of content in the game already). This is something Microsoft is doing to downgrade the appeal of buying used copies as it's a one time use code, so if one were to buy the game used, you get slightly less content. Sort of a drag.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 30 October 2009 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Hmm, yeah. Turns out the cars I'm missing are:

’65 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA
’64 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage
’81 BMW M1

’57 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa
’80 Fiat 131 Abarth
’67 Lamborghini Miura P400
’71 Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-R
’65 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe

goole, Sunday, 29 November 2009 20:34 (fourteen years ago) link

The online in this game has been a real disappointment and the reason I haven't been playing the game. I've seen people vote kicked for winning races, losing races, for being too low of a rank or too high of one & for no reason at all. I don't know who came up with this idea, but it is horrible.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:18 (fourteen years ago) link

are ppl kickable in MW2? i thought so, maybe not. it seems funny that this nice bright clean racing game is 1000x more aggro than the world's most crowded violence simulator, doesn't it?

the online shd be more arcadey. the lobby intermissions are interminable. i'd love to do the factory-spec races online instead of dealing w/ some asshole's ugly-ass blown out rx8

goole, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:33 (fourteen years ago) link

You can't kick people out of CoD.

I don't understand why they don't have a "ready up" between races, so there wasn't that minute and a half wait (plus all the loading between races).

Weirdly though, after complaining about the online, I went back to it today and had a great time racing in F class, which they've finally added in. Overall, some pretty clean racing and no vote kicks at all. Maybe I just got lucky?

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 4 December 2009 03:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I really enjoyed how realistically they portrayed Road Atlanta having been there for the Petit Le Mans recently.

you don't mess with the Lohan (CaptainLorax), Friday, 4 December 2009 03:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I've changed a few things about my approach to this game and I'm enjoying it more and more. First, I gave up on the cockpit view and have switched to the hood cam. Suddenly it feels a lot less restrictive and it even seems like there's more of a sense of speed that way. It's also easier to judge where other cars are in relation to you, since hood cam gives you a larger field of view, though it's still hard when you're side to side. Second, I've turned on the braking line - I just don't play the game enough to memorize each track and its variations and sometimes the curves are very hard to judge. Having the braking line on just makes it that much less stressful when taking a turn (though I still screw up now and then). I feel like trying to use the suggested braking line has really helped me be more competitive online and therefor made those races more fun.

Speaking of online, the addition of F class has really turned around my feelings there. I've been racing in F class a ton and love the feel. I've even won some races! I didn't realize what a big part avoiding other people's mistakes plays in getting a good result. It seems really important to stay out of the pack, and also if somebody is faster than you, to give them enough room to pass sometimes (rather than have them crash into you). Even in F class I have seen an unfortunate amount of accidents. Sometimes I think this is on purpose, sometimes I think it's because it's hard for people to perceive the cars to their sides accurately, sometimes I think it's just because people are driving out of control too fast and too stupid. On the bright side, people racing F class seem more laid back and there really has been much less "vote kick" nonsense than I saw in other modes earlier on. In 50-75 races I've only actually seen one person successfully vote kicked and only once have I come up for a vote (after a race I won cleanly!), though that vote failed.

A couple things I'd like to see added to the game would be a way to see the tuning and upgrades the people you're racing against have done to their cars. Sometimes when you're racing somebody with a car rated the same as yours, but they're considerably faster, you wish you could figure out how to tune your car to do better (but fuck if I want to spend a ton of time figuring that out). I've also noticed there doesn't seem to be a penalty for cutting the track... by nature and training I try never to illegally cut corners and the like, but I think I've noticed other people doing it online and posting lap times a couple seconds better than myself. Jeez, I think even the arcade racer Need For Speed: Shift has a three to five second penalty if you cut. It would also force people to race with more control, I think.

In single player season play I've reached the R3 championships. Trying to drive those cars is tough, but I feel like I'm figuring it out and that's very satisfying. The sense of speed with those things is crazy. Hopefully I'll be able to get okay enough at it to take those beasts online someday. One of my problem areas is launching those things... I just can't seem to get a smooth launch. Either I'm pressing the gas too much and skid out, or not enough and crawl off the starting line (which often causes me to panic and floor it, which causes me to skid out - sigh). Any advice on launching would be most appreciated.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 16:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i've never figured out launch! it's different for each car, obv, and the TCS doesn't even help until after the initial skid. you just have to feel it out i guess, and the computer will always do it a little better

i did the R3 with the ferrari FXX (insane) which wasn't that hard, but the FXX stock series is unreal, so hard. i've been racing a lot of series as if they were stock races -- checking the opposition and then buying the best car in the field and racing w/o mods. makes it a fun challenge. and cheap!

i have not raced online in a long time, tho, i shd do some F races, i have some of those cars that i really like.

goole, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I also haven't been upgrading, just buying a better car when I need it, except for online, where everybody upgrades their car to the highest spec for that class, so you really can't race competitively without upgrading to top spec (which is a slight bummer). I do wish there was an online mode where you could only race race stock / non-tuned cars, where everybody was given the same car, but a different random car for each race.

yes!! i wd be all over stock, same-car racing, but damn if motherfuckers can't even agree on a track half the time, just imagine... turn10 would have to pick a handful of cars at each class, and it'd get a little weird in upper classes where you can tune the stock car a little bit. ah why daydream, it'll never happen.

speaking of stock races, the lighter-wheels loophole has been closed, i'm sure you've noticed :(

got this, having fun so far much more playable than the GT games imo.

but it's got that same thing i hated about the hd GT games, the overly done squeaky clean graphics thing. i want dirt and oil and loud misfiring engine noises in my car games.

I get what you're saying - it's very much car porn of the most refined type - everything is very clean, basically a high performance car ad you can play.

i've already got shift, and yeah love it for that reason!

also, last night when a mate came round we ended up playing dirt 2 and motorsports2. both of which i've had a moan about on ilg before but fucking thoroughly enjoyed them last night.

love games again

bracken free ditch (Ste), Thursday, 8 April 2010 07:21 (fourteen years ago) link

While Dirt 2 and NFS:S are both pretty fun games, I think they both fall a little short in significant areas compared to Forza 3. Dirt 2 just doesn't have enough tracks or variety (and the x-games presentation can get crazy annoying). NFS: Shift has a very weird handling model that seems more broken the further you progress into the game. I honestly do feel the later levels (Tier 4 and on) of the game with the higher powered cars are basically unplayable due to all the bounce. The graphics in both those games are better than in Forza though and both have better online systems. Forza does beat both in its handling model and car and track variety - especially the handling model, which I think is probably the most important thing. Anyhow, glad for all three - too bad they all came out so close together last year as I think it diluted the impact of all of them.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 8 April 2010 14:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Another thing I was thinking about Forza 3, the driving is very good, but the racing often isn't. The game has a hard time finding that sweet spot. I often seem to be in an overpowered car that basically wins the race after the first lap even if I started at the back of the pack. That makes the game into kind of a leveling up grind to unlock new cars, but there's so many cars, unlocking new ones doesn't feel that important, since you really just need a good one or two for each class - not four hundred.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 8 April 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

a game like this should have some kind of auto-leveling function where the opposition is tuned to be very close to whatever car you show up in. the only races that were consistently fun and challenging in this were the factory stock events

goole, Thursday, 8 April 2010 16:19 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i totally agree about Shift faster cars becoming a little unplayable, and i think i had the same issue with GRID.

This is why whenever i load up shift now i still race around in the lower ranked cars. it's still a blast.

soz, i wasn't really comparing dirt and motorstorm to forza3. i was just surprised that i got enjoyment out of them after initially being disappointed with both of them.

fancy version of forza 4 has been pre-ordered. jeff u gonna do a new thread?

i am still enjoying this game.

my recommendations for maximum fun are: to not fuck with the auto-tune-up feature, but figure out how to do it yourself (not that hard really), do the "rivals" bit after each race, which is more of a skill challenge thing and squeezes a little more life out of each car/track

i really wish games like this had a "call race" feature -- the fun of the 1p game is all the permutations & restrictions. why not allow the player to set those (country, drive type, class, track, etc) and the AI puts in a field that fits? couldn't be that hard to do.

i am playing forza 4. it's ok. man, i was INto this shit 4 years ago.

it's an odd mish-mash of the highly technical (tuning options that you basically need an 2nd party app/spreadsheet to use capably) and the panderingly arcadey (each race is like 2 laps and there's no place qualifying lap). so you spend 45 mins setting up your expensive precision machine and then it's 6mins of bumper cars against the AI.

the 'career mode' just puts the events in some kind of order with some interstitial world map graphics and a plummy british announcer saying what you're doing.

i haven't done any online racing yet but i have noticed several anime-chick themed paintjobs for sale in the marketplace

oh and if you want to hear a different british guy wax on about cars or about how liberals and environmentalists are ruining the good things in life, jeremy clarkson is in it too.
