i mean i don't know, on one level this is the most retarded thing imaginable but on the other i started playing shadowgate and after about five minutes i thought "life's too short" and then ta dah

I only watch these to see what a game is like. Can't imagine watching them for the personality of the let's player

polyphonic, Saturday, 8 June 2013 18:44 (ten years ago) link

Shadowgate's a great example of that kind of game actually; really cool in concept for the time (as was Deja Vu) but who really wants to actually comb through that game now

Nhex, Saturday, 8 June 2013 18:50 (ten years ago) link

also for skill games or competitive games, it's easy to justify watching LPs

Nhex, Saturday, 8 June 2013 18:51 (ten years ago) link

Kikoskia is pretty good if you like his presenting style. Scott Manley is great for Kerbal Space Program stuff (he's an astronomer). AccountingNightmare is good for the first four Devil May Cry games.

these are good for walkthrough purposes but when i started using one for half-life i just started having a great time with it and watched every one, the guy doing it was entertaining and occasionally adorable. all the other ones i've used have been horrible gamer personalities tho

Nakar's journey thru Ultima 4-7 is hilarious, written more like a play

These can be quite entertaining but it depends on who does it; for example, the Giant Bomb playthru of Deadly Premonition is worth it for the commentary.

Also, one of the stretch goal bonuses with Obsidian's Kicktstarter earlier was to force Chris Avellone to play thru Arcanum and document it

mainly i started this because six hours into dark cloud i went "fuck this, i wonder if there's a let's play of it" and i wondered if other people were having this feeling as regularly as i have

im not a big LP guy but i like the informative ones, that delve into development history and in-game secrets and that kind of thing. my favorite is this one for Trespasser:

http://lparchive.org/Jurassic-Park-Trespasser/

the guy who did it sounds like tom bodett and knows an insane amount about the behind-the-scenes of trespasser

i wanna be a gabbneb baby (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 9 June 2013 11:16 (ten years ago) link

yeah that's half the stuff i want from these, the other is just 'this is the experience'. for if i'm curious about a game but can't be bothered emulating / buying / actually playing. though i don't tend to watch video ones because ...

i think it's funny that there's an 'informative' tag on the archive, like there are some of these that are 'not informative'

i have never heard of 'jurassic park: trespasser'

i remember the ads for it when it came out, because the graphics looked unbelievable at the time. they really reached for the moon on that one

The Ultima playthroughs do rock

I'll watch LP videos sometimes. When Minecraft came out for the xbox360 I watched a bunch of LP's, wanting to see all of the unique things people are doing in the game. I was actually thinking of watching one for "Last of Us", since that game looks amazing. I don't own a PS3, never will, but wouldn't mind watching some hours of the game since it's apparently very cinematic.

I watched a lp of starcraft 2 because no fuckin way was I gonna buy that to watch the cutscenes. I also watch a fair amount of these videos at work where Im chained to a desk.

I've said this on another thread but they are really best for reliving CD-ROM era adventure games that you don't actually want to go through the hell of playing again, while working on something else in another window.

fuckin love robbaz but some of his videos are a little one note. his kerbal space program videos are pretty good because you can tell how much he loves the game and theres a good amount of lols from watching things explode.

uggggh I hate the voices and personalities of 99.9999% of the guys that do this. Most of the time I just want to watch a playthrough, but instead it's all these guys that won't shut up. The only exception is "Criken", who doesn't really make "let's play" videos, but they're video games with talking that are actually funny so close enough

Homestarrunner guys doing a short parody Let's Play for a short fake Atari game. Cute, though maybe not as funny as I wanted it to be.

so many strategy games have terrible tutorials and/or offer no real indication on how to get going that these things are basically essential/save you hours and hours of grief
