Interesting - basically Share Play is the old network tunneling / Hamachi / LAN simulation to allow local multiplayer-only over the internet.

There are a couple of ilxors - myself included - think it's that neither PS4 or XboxOne has reached critical mass enough (nor has enough exclusives), so the only chatter seems to be on 'The upcoming console generation' thread.

I decided to take the plunge on one of these things; the lack of backwards compatability REALLY blows since I have a ton of old games that I still want to play, but between the good games that are out for it now, all the PS4 games I've already banked using PS+, and the fact that my old PS3 was getting too loud to use as a blu-ray player any more I said fuck it.

I can't quite dive into it full-on just yet since I'm going to swap out the stock HD for a 2 TB drive tonight and I didn't want to install everything twice (Destiny took HOURS to install last night ffs), but the little bit of tooling around that I've done with it so far has been really impressive. the new Dualshocks in particular are just a treat to use, although I had to get 2 just because the charge drains so fast (still better than the Wii U Gamepad, though). the Gold headset is p slick too - it's obviously the least of all the sets of headphones I own, but it's comfortable enough for me to wear it down until the battery dies, sounds good enough that I can turn off my speakers during gametime, and includes a built-in mic for chat & voice commands (which would be a lot cooler if I hadn't seen how much slicker the Xbone's voice stuff is).

anyway feel free to add my PSN ID (trdn89) if you need folks with whom to play.

the charge on the pads drains so quickly you need more than one pad? how quickly are we talking here, like minutes?

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Thursday, 25 September 2014 23:20 (nine years ago) link

I think I typically get a few hours, but the cable provided is like 30cm, so you can't charge-while-you-play unless you're parked in front of the TV. Also, what typically happens to me is that I've charged it, played for a couple of hours, watched some Netflix. Next day I go to play and after 5mins it says it's dead.

CraigG, Friday, 26 September 2014 14:28 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, the battery life on the DS4 is terrible. If you've got an outlet near where you play, though, you can plug a microUSB cable into any USB charger and play and charge at the same time.

I was playing Yooka-Laylee, the Rare tribute, recently, and it's bright and colourful, but I suppose depending on mood it might be either "I'm making new friends who will help me" or "Great, another fucker who wants something from me"

spider-man still has the eerie loneliness imo. even though it’s a bustling city 99% of your interactions with it are either bashing baddies or single-handedly attempting to overcome devious challenges set by often unseen ne’er-do-wells

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 26 October 2021 11:49 (two years ago) link

I started Ratchet And Clank. It's wonderfully realised and quite good fun, although a bit like playing a Pixar also-ran; it's definitely a youngster's game. I feel like I'm being very hard to please here, but it feels like as soon as we start trying to appeal to people over the age of 7 in any way it's suddenly got to be all gritty and depressing ;-)

Immortals: Fenyx Rising is a good Zelda clone.
Super Lucky's Tale is a decent 3D platformer. Spyro Reignited is great. A Hat in Time is another decent one.
Wandersong is a simple 2D adventure/platformer with a plot.
Donut County is a short simple game with a plot.

I think "Sekiro" broke my controller. For sure the left stick drift is now bad enough that I've died a few times in Dark Souls 2 doing nothing but standing too close to a ledge or something. Can anyone recommend a good third party replacement for the wireless DualShock, or is there a reason to stick with the real-deal?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 November 2021 16:04 (two years ago) link

have you tried blowing some compressed air into the stick shaft or anything like that? drift can sometimes just be due to some dust/debris underneath the stick

ciderpress, Wednesday, 17 November 2021 16:17 (two years ago) link

I tried some method I found online, but despite compressed air being the most obvious solution I don't think I've done that yet, lol.

Hmm, ok, what should I play next among the PS4 titles I've accumulated over the years for a pittance? (I'm done with Dark Souls 2; too long, DLC not holding my attention.) I've got a ton of stuff to choose from. Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharteds, Last of Us 2, Ghosts of Tsushima, Dying Light, Disco Elysium, Plague Tale, Prey, Outer Wilds, Mad Max, Control, Resident Evil 2/7/8. I've never even played Bioshock or Witcher 3.

The Resident 2 Remake is pretty great. Think I’ve enjoyed that more than the proper later entries, though those are solid as well.

It could be fine on PS4, not sure, but the PS4 Outer Wilds played on a PS5 is a clunky, ugly, glitchy mess. Weird input lag, locked at 30 FPS (not a pleasant experience for a first person game), and just feels janky overall. Was bad enough I asked for a refund and Sony just told me “tough shit”.

TLOU2 is a total stunner and a must play imo.

I’m vastly in the minority here, but I couldn’t get into Witcher 3 at all. Wish I got the hype.

circa1916, Monday, 31 January 2022 02:06 (two years ago) link

Err Resident EVIL 2 obv

circa1916, Monday, 31 January 2022 02:07 (two years ago) link

Well, at my rate Horizon Zero Dawn may take me through much (all?) of the winter. Yours might be the first bad thing I've heard about Outer Wilds. It's a little indie that could, isn't it? And Witcher 3 is a giant epic, right? Both seem like spring games, though TLOU2 may come first. I just didn't want to play it in the winter, because I assume it is no pick me up. And I know it's pretty long, though god knows it can't be as long as Dark Souls 2.

The Resident Evil games, especially the recent ones (new and reboots) look like tons of fun, though I've always had mixed experiences with them (long) in the past. Iirc I found the resource management system really stressful, which I'm sure it was - probably by design! Installments 7 and 8, however, from what I've seen of them, seem kind of campy, though, which may slightly undercut the horror/stress elements. When it came out I watched the first 20 minutes or so of Village, and the dialogue was sooooooo stupid that I could see the whole thing as good fun.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 31 January 2022 13:46 (two years ago) link

BTW, today I disassembled and cleaned my PS4 controller. Inevitably, I broke some part of it that doesn't seem important, but the controller does seem to work better, or at least the drift has gone away a little. I'm still tempted to buy a second one as a backup, though they're kinda hard to find these days.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 31 January 2022 18:55 (two years ago) link

Outer Wilds played fine on my PS4. But, as I've mentioned in a few other threads, it didn't blow me away.

circa and I on the same wavelength re: TLOU2 and Witcher 3, the latter of which (ahem) also had painful load times that compounded my dislike for the game. I guess if you really wanted to you could knock down the difficulty so that you don't ever die.

I'm playing Witcher 3 again on NG+ on the hardest setting. Certainly makes things like the combat a lot more challenging than the first time round. It was the first game I played on PS4 so I feel a bit spoilt, seeing as it is considered a Best In Class RPG. It really is an epic game with a huge amount of attention to detail.

Coming back to it again now I've played a few other things though, I'd say there are a few things they could have improved:

- More interesting and varied combat. This is where Bloodborne wins out. In Witcher there's a ton of different spells and potions you can use to win fightsz but ultimately it's a bit like following a recipe and once you know that recipe all you really need to do is go in and melee a bit until you eventually win

- Less of the rote fetch quests. I remember this from the first time round. For all its depth and world building, the majority of Witcher is "Speak to a peasant, go kill the monster, come back and get your reward". The minimap tells you where everything is, so once you're leveled up enough, you can complete quests in a zombie-like trance without really absorbing too much.

- Horses and NPCs. I didn't think RDR2 was a better game, but these two factors are where it clearly topped Witcher. It's barely worth riding Roach the vast majority of the time because she's just so unreliable and doesn't really handle much like a horse. Also, you can't attack NPCs and they really don't mind if you walk into their homes and Rob them in broad daylight.

Other than that, it's the best game ever made

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 08:25 (two years ago) link

Sony bought Bungie yesterday for $3.6 billion. Bungie have some very talented people, but the only series of note that they own is Destiny. Hope Sony's money guys know what they're doing.

adam t. (abanana), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 10:19 (two years ago) link

I think one of the main reasons Sony spent all that money was for the tech and expertise in running a global online service game, something they didn't have which would be v expensive to build out. e.g. how much money would an Uncharted themed Destinylike make?

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 10:55 (two years ago) link

From that end it does make sense; they already have the lock on critically acclaimed single-player cinematic adventure from their first-party studios, but multiplayer addiction is the real moneymaker these days.
