Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth. (A.k.a. "We can't call it Alpha Centauri 2; EA owns that")

Get hype!

"It's also important to note that you're not going to get all the technologies in a single game," McDonough explains. "The clash between your technological limits will drive a lot of the in-game play. The web design allows you to play the game in a discovery-oriented mode."

"Set in the future, global events have destabilized the world leading to a collapse of modern society, a new world order and an uncertain future for humanity," Firaxis said in the press release. "As the human race struggles to recover, the re-developed nations focus their resources on deep space travel to chart a new beginning for mankind."

Eight different expeditions have found a new planet to settle. The game begins with the player choosing one of these factions. Then they pick their spacecraft, cargo and colonists. All of these conditions affect how they begin the game.

Players then land on an alien world and grow their civilization. The usual Civ gameplay is all here: creating cities, commanding armies, and dealing with other civilizations. There are also some new elements to the strategy, though. Players can create orbital units with various benefits to their settlers below. Units can be upgraded and customized to suit players' preferred tactics. Quests will give players insight into the planet as well as material rewards.

Sound familiar?

Cautiously optimistic. Alpha Centauri was the best Civ game.

four months pass...

available for digital pre-order.

i'll probably do the thing where i wait a couple months until it goes on sale, but i suppose this is my most anticipated game of the year

it's 2K, there will be plenty of sales on this in the future. i'll probably be lazy and wait for the inevitable first expansion

It's OK, think I prefer the presentation of AC despite its age

yeah the joystiq review spent 75% of the words bashing on the production value and that sort of stuff then gave it a 4 out of 5.. who knows. im sure over time the game will be pretty dope.. just might not make sense to pick it up day 1..

It was a (voucher) birthday present so I thought I'd just buy it, the chances of it being outright shit (it isn't) were pretty remote. It's good, mostly because it's Civ, but it lacks the personality of Alpha Centauri. Perhaps a later patch will smarten it up because a lot of the interface feels a bit unfinished

DG, Friday, 24 October 2014 17:58 (nine years ago) link

it's a 2K game so it will on sale a bazillion times over the next year, no rush

it's the "sid meier" game that's consistently given me the most alive situations, where turn-to-turn decisions are stark + momentous. (also, bizarrely for a 4x, one of the best plots in video games.) after civ5 i'm worried beyond earth is gonna be watching large numbers accrue in space. will buy it when it sales tho yeah, bundled w/ expansion + $20 worth of $1.99 wonder videos.

i mean writing rly, not plot. "world-building." tho the way the recurring narrative of the worms weaves into the procedurally generated narrative of yr specific game is always p special.

Thinking of holing up with either this or Endless Legend over the holiday. The Rock Paper Shotgun reviews etc of EL made me think I should try that - anyone given it a go or know how they compare?

(fwiw I could take or leave Civ V, but still play IV a bit)

woof, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 15:14 (nine years ago) link

EL is supposed to be much better, yes
