his 16-23 footers are way up this season, but generally it seems to me that when harden is taking an 18-footer it's because it wasn't his first option
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 03:36 (ten years ago) link
every 15-18 footer I remember him taking this season was a great look (and he pretty much hit all of them)
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 03:37 (ten years ago) link
There's also a lot more insanity and capriciousness in his shot selection than you're implying. I think he takes a lot of midrange shots because he feels like it.
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 03:39 (ten years ago) link
well yeah i'm just trying to explain the data, he's a very good foul shooter and a good 3 point shooter, there's no reason his midrange % should be in the 30s unless something else is going on
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 03:39 (ten years ago) link
a lot of his rare midrange shots I should say xp
it's prob synergy, i was looking earlier and like 82 games and hoopdata didn't have it
― call all destroyer, Monday, 25 November 2013 03:39 (ten years ago) link
xp
he's not a good 3 point shooter
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 03:40 (ten years ago) link
he shot 36.5% on an insane amount of attempts last year doggie, 39% the year before. he's not steph curry but his 3 point shot is effective
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 03:41 (ten years ago) link
basically if you can break 35% you should be shooting as many 3s as possible
― k3vin k., Monday, November 25, 2013 3:41 AM (44 seconds ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
he is average. An average 3 point shooter.
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 03:42 (ten years ago) link
Yah man gotta be up around 40 to have green light all day.
― Spottie, Monday, 25 November 2013 03:43 (ten years ago) link
esp nowadays, how many dudes now can crack 45% even?
― shiny trippy people holding bandz (m bison), Monday, 25 November 2013 03:46 (ten years ago) link
shooting a 3 at 35% gives an expected points per shot of 1.15, which would be the best offense in the league. those are the shots teams should be maximizing, and the trend is clear -- the league average 3 point rate is over 25% this year, and has been steadily climbing.
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 03:49 (ten years ago) link
He doesn't isolate, he sets high picks and shoots right and drives left. He's the primary ball handler and jacks up a lot of late shots its hardly surprising that his FGs aren't assisted on.
And no he is well below average from midrange Last season he shot about 31%, league average was about 40% and that wasn't his first season of poor midrange shooting. If he could be iso Joe we've seen nothing to suggest that.
Haven't got a synergy subscription and such stats are hard to come by. In fact stats in general are hard to come by because he's only played 6 playoff games as a primary scorer, and stats from OKC aren't all that useful, so yes what I'm saying involves a lot of conjecture but I think broader stats bear out what I'm saying.

Do you think Kirk Hinrich should shoot 3s whenever he gets a chance
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 03:51 (ten years ago) link
there are other people on the court. Who shoot threes better than he does. He's not that good at it.
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 03:52 (ten years ago) link
he plays for the bulls so yes
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 03:53 (ten years ago) link
I mean your argument in favor of three point shooting in general is fine, but he's not a "good" three point shooter by NBA standards.
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 03:54 (ten years ago) link
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, November 24, 2013 10:52 PM (32 seconds ago)
yes, and these people are not as skilled at getting their own shots and have to be assisted more often. which is fine, but it's why i don't think the rockets should just give francisco garcia the ball and tell him to jack up as many 3s as possible (same with hinrich)
harden plays 39.3 minutes a game, has a usage rate of 27.1%, and his 3 point rate is 41.5%, which means that about 8% of all of houston's possessions are harden 3 pointers. given that he he's a 36.6% career 3 point shooter, that's a good thing, and something i'm sure houston's management wants to maximize
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 04:01 (ten years ago) link
lol bro ok average to slightly above average, whatever, harden is obv a good shooter the guy is not rudy gay or something.

but you just said Hinrich should jack up threes whenever
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 04:10 (ten years ago) link
because he plays for the bulls
also just to correct myself shooting 35% on threes would equate to 1.05 ppp not 1.15, which is still a bit above average
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 04:10 (ten years ago) link
Rudy gay jacks up a ton of threes at 34.4% career, so with a couple good months it would be a winning shot in your eyes
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 04:12 (ten years ago) link
homie that was a lil joke xp
anyone who shoots at least average on 3s should maximize the % of their own shots that are 3s, for someone like hinrich this probably means designing an offense that gets him open so someone can pass to him, for someone like harden who can create on his own this means giving him the green light
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 04:13 (ten years ago) link
if gay could bring his 3p% up above 35% in just a couple of months he would have to shoot like 90% which means yes it'd be a good shot for the time being ;)

pretty sure Hinrich is already open a ton, no need for designing
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 04:19 (ten years ago) link
and the bulls offense is doing so well, maybe i'm crazy
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 04:20 (ten years ago) link
Harden is good enough that you have to respect him enough to come up on him which is what opens up his biggest strength which is of course eurostepping his way to the basket and swinging his arms up and through defenders arms for fouls.
― Spottie, Monday, 25 November 2013 04:22 (ten years ago) link
anecdotally I think harden would be a better 3 point shooter if he was taking open spot up 3's--but, and I could be wrong, it seems like a significant portion of his 3 pointers are a higher degree of difficulty (ie, raising up over a defender or 2-3 feet back from the line).
― ryan, Monday, 25 November 2013 05:13 (ten years ago) link
would be interesting to see what the numbers are on pure spot up vs. pull up. He seemingly got a lot of wide open spot up looks in OKC and didn't do particularly well in general.
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 05:16 (ten years ago) link
kinda pumped for Suns/Heat tomorrow.

those numbers exist somewhere too, probably also synergy. guys like lowe cite them all the time. i feel like it's not too long until those kinds of stats are more widely available
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 05:39 (ten years ago) link
to me spotting up should only count if there is no dribble at all, and I don't 100% trust synergy on that. they do have spot up numbers tho.
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 05:53 (ten years ago) link
I wish synergy was easier to navigate with players. Team numbers are much better.
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 05:54 (ten years ago) link
do you have synergy? tell us the #s!
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 November 2013 05:55 (ten years ago) link
well I'm still trying to figure out how to search previous seasons, but in this season basically all his 3 point shooting is the same. Spotups and Pick and rolls both 33.3%
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 25 November 2013 06:24 (ten years ago) link
ok last year he was very good in P&R and spot up at 39.5% each, but dreadful in isos at 31%. So I guess he just needs to stop being an idiot and taking dumb 3s.
Strangely enough in OKC he was actually pretty good at iso 3s.
