Will Greg Oden ever step on the court and play for The Miami Heat?

Message Bookmarked

Greg Oden last played professional basketball in the 2009-2010 season when he put in 21 games for the Portland Trailblazers. He has signed a two-year deal with The Miami Heat, the second being a player option. If he suits up for by Christmas it will be over 4 years since he last stepped on the court.

"I'm not going to sit and here and say I'm 100 percent," Oden said in published reports. "I am feeling good, but I have a lot of work to do." Oden said in published reports.

Oden has undergone three microfracture knee surgeries and numerous other medical procedures since being drafted in 2007.

not play a single minute

lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 00:08 (ten years ago) link

- In sixth grade, Oden underwent surgery to repair his hip . Following the surgery, one leg was then longer than the other, resulting in his unusual gait which is often misstaken for a limp.

- His senior year of high school, Oden underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his wrist , an injury that kept him out until December for his freshman year of college, after which he helped push his team to the NCAA Championship Game, only to fall short.

- On September 13th, 2007, during preseason before his rookie season, he underwent microfracture surgery to repair his right knee. He would miss the entire 2007-2008 season.

- Oden managed to return from his first microfracture surgery only to have Andrew Bynum land on his foot on October 28th, 2008, injuring it . He would miss only two weeks, though.

- Then on February 13th, 2009, he bumped knees with Corey Maggette and chipped his left patella . It was the first injury sustained to his left knee and he missed three weeks due to it.

- He recovered from that and 2009-2010 was set to be his year. He was looking very much like finally the player he was supposed to be. Then on December 5th, 2009, he landed without contact on his left leg, and badly fractured his left patella . His recovery was projected to take him right up until training camp of 2010.

- After missing training camp, preseason, and the start of the regular season , and after saying he wouldn't return until he was 100% healthy but that he could still be an impact player and that he was not a bust, it was announced on November 17th, 2010 that Oden would undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee and would miss the entire 2010-2011 season.

- On February 3, 2012, Oden underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

- During the operation, further damage to the articular cartilage was discovered, and Oden underwent his third micro-fracture surgery.

Yes, Oden will play before the All-Star break of the 2013-14 season.

only because this option includes the possibility that sometime during the first quarter, his legs will fall off.

yeah i was going to include the "Yes, he will play, but he will die on the court" option but it felt cruel in its likelihood

Dude will not play a single minute

Hooks on Phoenix worked for me (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 04:16 (ten years ago) link

Worst case is he gets injured in practise and never sees a minute of game time. Best case is he averages about 3 minutes per game over the course of the next season. I think he probably got some close scrutiny from Heat doctors before they pinned $2 million onto his shirt, so they do expect he'll see some game time. I'm betting he can make it out of training camp and comes off the bench briefly at about twenty games into the season. I know he's motivated.

Aimless, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 22:45 (ten years ago) link

I wouldn't even let him walk until the minute they want to play him, just wheel him over to the bench to check in.

lag∞n, Thursday, 17 October 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link

My post was the most optimistic one on this thread and that was predicting he'd only average 3 minutes per game as the very best case imaginable. The question isn't if he'll contribute meaningful minutes. We all know he's cooked. He knows it, too. This is all about a kind of redemption, proving to the world he is willing to do whatever it takes to play. Yeah, it's sad, but he needs this to happen.

just thinking abt ades comment and its understandable that teams would want to take the center over the wing even tho durant was p obvs a generational talent, i mean it was the wrong decision but its understandable, but then just thinking like the blazers gave oden a check up before they drafted him, they knew one of his legs was wildly shorter than the other which is really well known to cause all sorts of injury up and down the body, and they still drafted him, that is insane

Will Greg Oden ever step on the court and play for The Miami Heat?

does preseason count

By the terms of the thread title, it would appear the answer is yes.

Aimless, Thursday, 24 October 2013 17:11 (ten years ago) link

preseason def does not count and i will tell you why, everyone involved in greg getting that one min playing time admitted that he wasnt nearly game ready and it was just for fun, ie it wasnt real playing time cause it wouldnt have happened in a real game, also it doesnt count cause it wasnt a real game, might as well give him credit for scrimmages or practicing free throws
