Worst NFL Head Coach as of 10/5/2015

i had a clear answer to this question prior to this morning. it's time to crown a new champion.

Bill O'Brien is completely ruining what was once a very good Texans team.

Tough question. A lot of the bad teams seem like they'd be bad no matter who was coaching.

Seems too early to judge Tomsula but they haven't looked good. Huge talent exodus though.

Campbell is 0-0 so I'll wait on him, but he doesn't seem like he's prepared for the job.

He has assistant head coach written all over him imo. Great confidant/go-between type. Not a dude you want making your gameplan or keeping your team motivated.

there was a time this was ron rivera but somehow not anymore

he's not the worst but voted mike mccarthy

my bottom 3 would be

caldwell, tomsula, lovie smith

i think i might vote for lovie... not sure a single thing has gone right for the bucs since he's been there, and there's been a lot of talk about his defense just being out of step w/ the league in a way that is really debilitating

o'brien might be another belichick guy who thinks he knows it all but is actually in over his head, then again it's hard to judge someone whose QBs have been ryan fitzpatrck, brian hoyer and ryan mallett

& this year w/ no arian foster they basically never stood a chance

can't possibly say tomsula, no way to know if he is good or bad in that situation

caldwell is a strong shout, most teams you can see what they are trying to do at least but what is the identity or area of strength detroit is trying to build? they just seem to be gradually disintegrating across all units

o'brien seems like he is probably bad but he has nothing to work with. they could've had that division on lock but that roster gets worse every year.

lovie is another good suggestion, he really does seem lost now. bucs do have some talent

i think chuck pagano is probably bad. not sure what he does for the team. dude was a defensive coordinator, no sign of that with the way this team plays. most notable thing he has done was get sick.

mccarthy is fine, maybe you can argue a better coach and gbp would dominate the league in a nasty way, they do always find players but they do also always have holes. and for some reason they are the unhealthiest team, after a while there's gotta be a reason. those are maybe reasons to give mccarthy the benefit of the doubt, but he doesn't seem to be able to creatively apply his playing resources to make up for problems or create a wrinkle, which separates the truly good hcs.

obvious answer is chip kelly, which of these dudes has done more to undermine his team in 2015?

chip might be the worst GM in the NFL but if you had to put your life on one football game played by randomly assembled players and you chose, idk, jay gruden or lovie or caldwell or pagano or tomsula over chip i bet you would die

I love tomsula and was terrified when he got the job.

I mean, I loved him as a defensive coach

and then was terrified upon hearing he was hired as head coach

xps to js, one the one hand i agree, on the other hand he tried to call an entire nfl game using 2 run plays.

it's not been a great season for #TeamChip i'll readily admit that but he's done several things in his first two seasons that many coaches on this list have and/or could not do

gotta say - i'm feeling pretty good about dan quinn!

o'brien and kelly both may end up being good coaches but i don't think it's going to be with their current teams.

pagano is certainly in the running here. i don't pay any attention to tampa but get the sense that lovie may be in the group with fisher and fox where they aren't "bad" but have been passed by.

you can sort the rest into various categories but i feel like those 3 are the only ones who are up and down great w/ no caveats

the real question is which of these guys can retire, go on a network pregame show and be called 'coach' for the rest of their lives

john fox underrated there, better than some of the guys in that 2nd tier imo. horrible game manager but as good a defensive coach as anyone.

tomlin's in-game decisions get wacky but the dude's had pretty patchwork teams for a while and has them in the playoffs or in playoff contention in week 17 every year

but that's more in the andy reid class

yeah fox went to the super bowl w/ delhomme he's prob underrated

xp i mean sure but one of the qualifications of being a great coach is being a great in-game coach.

tomlin though, i don't think he even schemes anything, he seems like a cool boss who lets you do whatever you want while trusting you to be a good employee.

fox was an excellent coach, i think he's just old now

does anyone aside from pats fans or burned out jets fans objectively think rex ryan is a genuinely terrible coach?

not terrible, but closer to mediocre than most people think

it's tempting to say "it would be great to see rex coach a team with a competent offense" but at this point it seems like incompetent offense is part of the rex package

as is the undisciplined play, as is the constant talking, as is the three-year shelf life.

he prob shouldve stayed a DC for sure. (the shit-talking makes him an immensely enjoyable presence, tho.)

was expecting at least one ken whisenhunt vote but i suppose he has a past to fall back on and its not like he's had anything to work with in tennessee

whisenhunts reign there is v weird. each season began w a fairly impressive road win........and otherwise he has one single victory over jax at home O_o

I've been big on Rex for a while but watching a Fitzpatrick-led Jets team go to 4-1 while the Bills struggle mightily is changing my mind. Buffalo sure seems like a better team on paper.

honestly i like the jets personnel on defense a lot more than the bills. bills are maybe a little ahead on offense but not much.

Bills have lost to better teams.

jets got alot better elsewhere in the offseason iirc, hell tbh fitzpatrick over geno is an upgrade too
