moderation request: democratic bans

with a hardkore irritating poster who inspires constant requests for bannage (while never actually doing anything technically bannable) would it be a good idea to take a vote on potential ban? not like winner-takes-all 49%-51% but getting 2/3rds or 4/5ths yes vote & the ban goes through. do it by email (like old style ilx polls) instead of poll thread to prevent ballot-stuffing, and have a discussion thread to debate pros/cons. i predict this would make ilx a more enjoyable place overall and and the threat of democratic bans would increase signal/noise ratio. thank you & good day.

This is a horrible idea

I know, right?, Saturday, 2 August 2008 17:54 (sixteen years ago) link

well, I think it's a good idea only if the potential bans are nominated by admins (e.g. TOMBOT starting a "should cankles be banned?" poll rather than King Boy Pato starting a "should Dom Passantino be banned?" poll)

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 2 August 2008 18:03 (sixteen years ago) link

i still think this is a good idea

and what, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah everytime you decide to get tired of something everybody does you can start a big meta thread about how somebody who does it should be banned

ask dom how that worked out

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Hey Dom, how did that work out?

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 20:52 (sixteen years ago) link

serious answer: i think that this would lead to a whole bunch of people getting banned for the wrong reasons, esp since the drive to vote for a ban is always going to be stronger than the drive to vote against when mostly you just don't give a fuck about them or know who they are.

John Justen, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 20:54 (sixteen years ago) link

also it would lead to lengthy, insipid meta threads, which are bullshit

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 20:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Key question: in the event of a "no" result to a "should x be banned" poll, would those requesting banning agree that the battle had been lost and proceed to stfu? Cause I don't think they would, and b-hurt would abound like beasts upon the earth.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:04 (sixteen years ago) link

no, because there is no way you can create a balloting system that is completely impervious to moderator tampering, which we would all do, constantly

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I know for example that Keith, instead of trying to code a better board, actually spends all his time fucking with the poll results on ILM

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Eh?

Keith, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:21 (sixteen years ago) link

secret's out, sorry buddy

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Ha, if only it were that easy. I appear to have made that really rather hard on myself. So much s**t is cached that doing that would involve stopping and starting the site, which scares me s**tless.

Keith, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:25 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not moderator tampering that's the issue there - it's user tampering. As you know, I have actually coded the thing that and waht is asking for (a 'suggest ban' button that clocks up votes and then just automatically bans someone when the votes reach a certain level). I agree with you though, it would all go wrong really quickly.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Waht, like your name or something? I did that. Big HOOS, I have done a thing that lets you change your username. Sorry that you got stuck with it on day one!

Keith, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, Omar, are you trying to suggest that I am asking for something for my work? Because I haven't and I won't.

It worked out with the mods pretty much breaking every single promise they made.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 7 August 2008 10:54 (sixteen years ago) link

i would support more democratic bannage but i've never really been troubled by any banning of an ilxor by individual mod so it's not a big issue for me personally.

I think the premise of this thread would work better backwards. I like the idea of democratic unbanning, if the mods make an unpopular or controversial decision to ban someone and people want to vote to overturn it.

What were you getting suggest banned for LJ? The Mansun thread?

I had nothing to do with it this time, btw.

caek, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Absolutely no idea. Steady accumulation due to rants/jibes being taken too seriously, I'd assume. The (obviously deliberately OTT) Liverpool thread probably grabbed me about 5-10 more humourless SB's. Oh, and I suspected you hadn't SB'd me; you're not passive-aggressive about your objections, which is a good thing.

caek, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 19:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay as someone contributing to this, I suggest we stop this conversation as it is a) becoming a personal attack, and b) likely to goad the people participating in it into acting like knobs.

caek, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 19:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Hang on, I'm getting all this from Laurel/JJ etc about my "regular daily conduct", which confuses me, as I've actually made it my business on ILX to sincerely participate and attempt to improve relations rather than troll and irritate. If the latter seems to be happening, then there's some serious communication breakdown. Generally when I have a pop, I'm doing so with tongue firmly in cheek. What I've learnt is that ILX still thoroughly befuddles me. Can someone spell this lesson out?
