ed that is hottt

a bike shop in the next suburb is a BMC dealer, has a 2010 team machine on the floor - almost too thin and spindly for my liking tbh, would still accept grudgingly if given one

Bike Snrub ILX (haitch), Thursday, 15 April 2010 13:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I live in a cramped first-floor flat. One bike is on a rack at the bottom of the stairs by the front door, balanced above a push chair and assorted bits and pieces, the other was on a rack hanging above the really steep stairs leading down from our kitchen to our half-a-garden, dangling above various buckets and things. This set up was started when I bought my winter bike last October: the heavy winter bike was on the sturdy rack by the front door (for easy access for winter rides) and the lightweight racer was on the difficult-to-access back stairs, sitting out the winter.

Earlier this month, with spring finally here and the racing season well under way, I swapped the bikes over. Within a few days the rack on the back stairs revealed it couldn't handle the weight of the winter bike. There was a loud crashing sound and I discovered this:

The wall is too crumbly to support a rack that will take the bike. I tried this as a temporary storage solution:

but unsurprsingly that wasn't very convenient.

197something Ross Eurosport complete with FFS (Front Freewheel System; the pedals freewheel while the chain/back gear stay completely still--so weird!) and a license sticker expiring in August 1975. Also it weighs like 40 thousand pounds.

it rides pretty nicely actually. being a noob I googled the bike and found this thread. would an upgrade from the stock wheels improve the ride a lot?

SOL indeed. Didn't turn up on CL or eBay, pittsburgh's finest didn't find it.

Most of those parts need to go back on E's bike.

back from being coupled, new group, some heavyish wheels i borrowed from a friend to try out for a while. tale of the scale: 17 lbs 3 oz as you see it. too bad my riding time is nil.

niiiice

really want a coupled bike. what'd it run you if you dont mind me asking?

ullr saves (gbx), Thursday, 10 March 2011 23:45 (thirteen years ago) link

retrofit was $750 on special i think. i sent it at thanksgiving, only got it back last week. guys at b1l3nky are very nice tho, and i tried not to bug them. i didn't need it for the winter. the s&s case and accessories cost though. the transaction made no sense if not for my theoretical 10 year time horizon, and then...no it still didn't make sense. i'm taking it to sc on vacation though, so i'll start trying to get some value out of it.

took it for a shakedown ride, feels exactly the same as before, but the little cable splitter on the rear brake pings on the top tube and is utterly intolerable. gonna try to relocate it further forward to see if that works. it's that or like, wrap it in felt.

end aggro business now (Hunt3r), Thursday, 10 March 2011 23:49 (thirteen years ago) link

hmmm. at that price I'd rather roll it into the cost of a new bike.

ullr saves (gbx), Thursday, 10 March 2011 23:54 (thirteen years ago) link

retrofitting steel is like $450, if that makes a difference. i tried to find a used ritchey breakaway, but i couldn't seem to find one for a reasonable amount. plus, their luggage is not truly airline baggage compliant in size. i think someone on a smaller ritchey frame could use a compliant s&s case thought- you're on a 54ish?
