retrofit was $750 on special i think. i sent it at thanksgiving, only got it back last week. guys at b1l3nky are very nice tho, and i tried not to bug them. i didn't need it for the winter. the s&s case and accessories cost though. the transaction made no sense if not for my theoretical 10 year time horizon, and then...no it still didn't make sense. i'm taking it to sc on vacation though, so i'll start trying to get some value out of it.

took it for a shakedown ride, feels exactly the same as before, but the little cable splitter on the rear brake pings on the top tube and is utterly intolerable. gonna try to relocate it further forward to see if that works. it's that or like, wrap it in felt.

hmmm. at that price I'd rather roll it into the cost of a new bike.

retrofitting steel is like $450, if that makes a difference. i tried to find a used ritchey breakaway, but i couldn't seem to find one for a reasonable amount. plus, their luggage is not truly airline baggage compliant in size. i think someone on a smaller ritchey frame could use a compliant s&s case thought- you're on a 54ish?

i like it dude. i have a teammate who got his surly coupled (or did it come coupled?) and he is a field guy so he's always flying around during most weeks, he finds time to ride nonetheless. The whole cable coupling apparatus kinda blows my mind tbqh.

i don't travel v. often, i'm just tired of my couple times a year where i visit family and i can't ride. if there's something i _want_ to do on vacation, it's ride. but in the end, it's not my travel bike, it's just gonna be my only road bike.

(also, we were very close to going to italy this summer to ride for a couple weeks, but have reconsidered and decided against it ;_;).

first impression as total newb to sram-- weeeiiiird. sorta plastic-y and sticky feeling, and the throws seem a little long. not bad at all though, i'm sure i'll get the hang of it.

end aggro business now (Hunt3r), Friday, 11 March 2011 00:21 (thirteen years ago) link

think i'm on a 52, tbh, not quite sure.

cross-checks come pre-coupled as traveler's checks now---cost about a G for the frameset. very nearly got one when i got my surly, but they were backordered or something, i can't remember.

retrofitting would def be cheaper, but i'd probably want to get the dropouts replaced, too, and by that point we're getting close to whatever a travelers goes for cost (i know a store manager and two qbp employees)

Some major cleaning and rust spot removal required - have tried the alu foil trick on a few spots and that works awesomely well.

project done, got a cheap wheelset that is heavy-as, botched on my old mountain bike rear mech as the old one pretty much shattered on me, haven't resprayed it or anything as the stem and BB were *very* difficult to shift, even LBS couldn't do owt with them... Swapped pedals out from the Felt, put some nice cabling on it I had lying around, along with mudguards, is waaaaaaay twitchier than Felt, cockpit much more compact.

Borrowed my cousin's (works at warranty/return warehouse for Masi/Haro, gets to put bikes together for himself from the parts bin) SS CX bike, took it for a spin around the local mtb canyon trails and LOL if he thinks I'm giving this thing back to him easily. So so so much fun.

i have a local mixed surface ride i like to do in the winter, and i wonder if a ss would get it done for me, as it has some vert. if i ever upgrade my commuter (a ss cx iro frame but with an 8spd hub) i may build it up ss. it sounds great, but i don't know if i'd use it so much. i'd probly have to sell my reg cx to justify, but having a reg cx backup bike is v. useful. i already have too many bikes cluttering shit up, tho they all get used.

it's extremely hard to drop a chain on a ss. also, less moving parts (derailleurs) = less chance of getting your drivetrain mucked up in inclimate conditions.

reflectors are appropriate on a commuter/utility bike imo, though the pedal ones will break off shortly anyway. i mean, there are better reflectors out there, but i think they're ok for now. better than a ride on the hood of car.

Feel like reflectors are worth keeping, in general. There have been a few times when I've been driving and haven't seen cyclists' lights, but their reflectors popped out at me.

Dan I., Wednesday, 27 July 2011 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

Almost any lights below Superflash caliber are almost worthless imo, which is not to say everyone shouldn't have them anyway

they're not reflectors, they're lights. they're required by the city of alexandria. apparently cops are really vigilant about harassing bike people.
