Libble invites will soon be available; please read this entire post before posting.

As a result of the authorities shutting down OiNK.cd, we have had an influx of requests for Libble Invites. At this time, our servers are at their maximum load, and we can not accept new members. However, we are working to expand our resources and will be able to accommodate a large percentage of the OiNK diaspora at a date in the near future (hopefully by mid November).

However, since we will not be able to accommodate 180,000 new members all at once, we must exercise some discretion when welcoming new members into our p2p family. To give us an idea as to where you are coming from, we require you to answer the following:

a) requested username
b) first name (no surnames)
c) age
d) gender
e) geographic location
f) desired avatar (no cute avatars allowed)

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers

2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.
2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)

3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).

4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).

6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).

7) BONUS REQUIREMENT: Please post a picture of yourself. (HINT: do this.)

Selected applicants will be notified here or via webmail. Once our server issue is sorted, you will receive your invite.

Thanks for your interest, and good luck!!!!!!!

1) Brilliant Red Lights - Touch Like You Want It; Tera Melos/By The End of Tonight - Complex Full of Phantoms; What Price, Wonderland Split With Syn-Error (Summer '07 Tour CDR)
2a) The ratio of a user is the amount he or she has uploaded divided by the amount that has been downloaded. It is generally desired to have a ratio of at least 1.000. Many trackers require a certain ratio to be maintained in regards to how much a particular user has downloaded.
2b) Many of my downloads were obscure so uploading was hard at times. At the time of its closure, i had a .8 ratio.
3) African American influence on music can be traced back to the time of slavery when spirituals were commonly sung. Later on, African-American influence would be commonly felt in the Big Band era. Jazz and blues would remain to be a source of African-American influence throughout the rest of century and even into today. However, the disco era of the 1970's would certainly prove to be a genre home to many African-American artists. Then came the '80s which brought on a new style known as hip-hop as well as "rap". These styles of music now dominate the mainstream music market but not just there. It has also extended influence to speech and clothing styles too. The modern style of African-American music certainly dominates today's radiowaves.
4a) Blonde Redhead - 23; Battles - Mirrored; Minus the Bear - Planet of Ice; Tera Melos/By The End of Tonight - Complex Full of Phantoms, Oxbow - The Narcotic Story
4b) Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II; Metallica - Metallica; Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge; Smashing Pumpkins - Gish; Nirvana - Nevermind
5) I believe the most unjust rating given by Pitchfork that i know of is their review of Blonde Redhead's "23". This album received a score of seven out of ten. I think Blonde Redhead's newest record certainly deserves a better score than that. The soaring title track and haunting melody of "The Dress" caught my interest when i first heard them. "Spring and By Summer Fall" is also another noteworthy track. In my opinion, the album deserves at least an eight out of ten.
6) For a start, I don't like Moby. I don't know if he is a good person or not, but I've never enjoyed his music. I have also never listened to all of his music either so I cannot confirm whether he truly is a bad artist or not. Morrissey strikes me as an interesting person because of his appearance yet he is considered at odds with large record labels. Many mainstream artists release material that is sculpted from the interests of record labels and not created solely from the mind of the artist(s). But in the end, I believe I would prefer Momus over the rest. His style would most appropriately satisfy my taste out of my three options.

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers

My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade (320 kbps)
Nirvana - In Utero (320 kbps)
Necro - Gory Days (192kbps)

2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.

A ratio is how much you have uploaded versus how much you have downloaded. If your ratio is bad it means you are a bad member of the community. it is best to have a higher ratio.

2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)

0.899 (i would have been over 1.0 if they hadn't been busted!!!)

3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).

African Americans invented Blues music. They also invented Jazz music. Also, they helped to popularize Reggae music and gospel music. These styles of music morphed into Rock and Roll. Rock and Roll became very popular in America and other countries in the 1950's and 1960's. Also, many African Americans popularized soul music which turned into Hip Hop. Now there are more famous Black musicians than any other kind of musicians. African Americans pwned all the rest of the musicians in the scene.

4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?
1- Radiohead - In Rainbows
2- Machine Head - The Blackening
3- Oceansize - Frames
4- CunninLynguists - Dirty Acres
5- M.I.A. - Kala

4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?
1- Nirvana - Nevermind
2- Dr. Dre - The Chronic
3- Beastie Boys - Check Your Head
4- Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
5- RATM - RATM

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).
Paul Barman - Paullelujah! is the most unjust of all pitchfork reviews. They only gave it a 2.0. That is a very bad score. Paul Barman has proven that he is a very creative and intelligent rapper and this entire album is a masterpiece! Every track on it is funky and also funny (lol). It deserved at least an 8.5.

6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).
I would pick Moby. Moby is a very versatile musician who puts out many different styles of music. If I got bored with one kind of music, I could listen to another kind of Moby music. Also, many of his songs are energetic and uplifting which would be very helpful on an island where I could be sad often. I feel like Morrissey would make me very sad a lot. I do not know who Momus is so I would not feel comfortable bringing his music with me. Moby is the winner for me!!!!

7) BONUS REQUIREMENT: Please post a picture of yourself. (HINT: do this.)

1) Motorpsycho, Jan Garbarek, Bjørn Torske

2a)The relationship between uploads and downloads. Depending on rules of site one has to stay above a certain level. OiNK had 1:1 which ensured quality and contributing members.
2b)0.85 - I had been a long time member, coincidentally below at shutdown but overall a steady and good member.

3) Partially unacknowledged influence in Western music. Hip-Hop being the obvious starting point. Late Jazz, Blues, funk and Reggae are all influenced and incorporates elements from African American music. Speaking rhymes rather than singing them are one of the main derivatives of the genre. Songs containing a melodic line and a strong rhythmic beat with repeated choruses is typical. As mentioned by others, hip-hop is not only about the music, but also represents a lifestyle or attitude often strongly opposed to authorities and alot of Hip-Hop artists have a strong political sentiment in their writings/rhymes..

4a) The National - Boxer, Ellen Allien and Apparat - walls, Blind Archery Club - The Union, Radiohead - In Rainbows, The Field - From here we go sublime

4b) Nirvana - Nevermind, The Smashing Pumkins - Mellon Collie and the infinite Sadness, Radiohead - OK Computer, Low - I Could live in hope, Nick Cave - Let Love in

5) Don't remember a rating I've considered directly unjust, maybe the rating of Badly Drawn Boy - About a Boy was a bit extreme. Anyway, trying not to get too dictated by Pitchfork as it is a bit too defining and trusted in my opinion. Unhealthy when everyone reads and trusts the same source. A bit like Lonely Planet it has become.

6) Morrisey: Pompous and depressive with a hint of hope and self-irony. Life is a pigsty would be a suitable track while chewing on some piece of bark.

7)Sorry, but I'm not going to do this. Privacy concerns.
Hint or no hint, I don't like posting my face all over the web. Hope you respect this one.

1)DogBoy "Rebel"; Skindred "Roots Rock Riot"; Direct Connection "Dub Infection"

2a) Ratio is how much user downloaded and how much user uploaded. Every good tracker has own rules when user can find info about minimal ratio. If ratio is bigger and bigger in means that you are good user, not the leecher. Tario should be always over then 1.0.

2b)My ratio at Oink was about 1.47 (over 330 albums ripped and uploaded by myself).

3)Hmm, it's not easy to explain because of me English but I'll try. In 30's there was golden era of jazz music which is very popular until present days. Americans had very great era in 60's-70's when The Doors was born. It was era of LSD anf freedom festivals agains the war in Vietnam. The Doors were inly musicans but their music was very political.American's music culture hak great moments of blues which is still playing everywhere. There was funk, now There is in Amrica the biggest market of hip=hop music. Near hip-hop is r'n'b. Many metal bands came from America (Florida was the mother of detk metal). Bay Area had own children - thrash metal. In American music history you can also find ethno music, clubbing (especcially house) and many, many more. Uff..:-)

4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?
1. Machine Head - The Blackening
2. Vavamuffin - Inadibusu
3. Paprika Korps - Magnetofon
4. Rob Zombie - Zombie Live
5. Tatiana Okupnik - On My Own

4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?
1. Slayer - Reign in Blood
2. Beastie Boys - Check Your Head
3. Adam Freeland - On Tour
4. Metallica - Ride The Lighting
5. Dreadzone - Sound

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).
I don't remember exactly one unjust pitchfork numerical rating but there are a lot so weird ratings. Why? Because if I hate for exaple new-metal than it's impossible to give some release from this music area high ratio. And second thing: we say in my country that people shouldn't speak about tastes because there are so many tastes as people.

6) I'm choosing Moby. His music is different in every moment. Sometimes you can hear pure electronic, other time you will find live instruments. Via Moby you can dance or just listen to. At Moby's music you can hear very happy music or music more spiritual. Moby gives you a chance to find sounds for your every feeling at avery moment.

7) I'm sorry but I wouldn't show my face on the net. I hope you will understand this.

5.The Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come

Gelugugu - I Love Ska Punk

2a)A ratio is the amount you have uploaded over the amount you have downloaded. A bad ratio (typically below 0.5 or 0.25) is grounds for getting banned from a site if you do not correct it after being warned. Private trackers use a ratio as an incentive for their users to leave torrents seeding for an extended period of time. This has the effect of speeding up downloads because there are more people seeding.

2b)My OiNK ratio was 2.059

3)Jazz, Rock and Roll, and Hip Hop are among the genres of western music greatly influenced by African American culture. The rythms in jazz are no doubt derivatives of traditional African music. In the 1950's Elvis Presley became popular with a style of music normally performed only by African Americans. It is worth noting that he was also instrumental in the civil rights movement becaue both black and white people came together to listen to him. This, in itself, further fueled the fusion of traditional "white" music with music in African American Culture. Hip Hop itself is deeply rooted in the oral tradition of African Culture. Today we see this its influence in rap/metal fusion bands such as Linkin Park. It seems today that African American culture has touched nearly every genre of popular music.

4a)Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in Between
Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell
The JB Conspiracy - This Machine
The Killers - Sam's Town
Serj Tankian - Elect the Dead

4b)From 1981: (Difficult because I was a tad too young to buy music)
Kraftwerk - Computer World
Minor Threat - In My Eyes
Duran Duran - Duran Duran
Journey - Escape
AC/DC - Dirty Deed Done Dirt Cheap

5)The rating of 4.9/10 for the soundtrack to the movie Run Lola Run is horrible. The review states, "The frenetic mood is pretty constant-- a highly essential feature, I admit, for a film entitled Run Lola Run-- but a few changes of mood might encourage me to spin this one more often." Seems to me that this was written by someone who is not a fan of electronic music, or psychedelic trance in general. This is one of the finest albums of repetetive trance ever written. The reviewer does not realize that there is an entire genre of music that sounds like this. Personally I would give this something close to a 9.0, based on the fact that it not only captured the mood of the film perfectly, but also stands out as a great suite of music by itself.

6)Moby, based on the fact that it is electronic. Electronic music is much more fun to analyze than other types of music. I could probably pass a significant portion of the time on the island before I starved to death analyzing why the female vocals on "First Cool Hive" appear in that song. Later when I become delirious from lack of food and water I could listen to the James Bond Theme remix and somehow convince myself I was James Bond to make myself feel better. Finally without anything left I would listen to "Porcelain" whilst singing along "...so this is goodbye."

Binary Star - Masters Of The Universe (320 CBR)

2a) A ratio is the user's uploaded amount divided by the users downloaded amount, in simple math
When the users' ratio exceeds 1, he has uploaded more than he has downloaded, this is ideal, as it
shows the person actually shares, and uploads more than they download. A ratio is a good indicator
of how a person behaves on trackers.
2b) My ratio at Oink was 2.491 (around 65GB up and 25 down)

3) African American culture has affected Western music in two facets; first with jazz influences of the
1950s, and second, with soul music which evolved into the hip-hop subculture, which is popular today.
In the 1950s, African American artists became increasingly popular in the jazz scene. Chief among them was
influential musician Miles Davis, whose innovations in jazz and jazz fusion have influence in music
across all genres today. In addition to Davis, New Orleans was a haven for jazz musicians at the time, with
pioneers such as Louis Armstrong. In addition to advanced in jazz thanks to African American culture, the culture
also invented the concept of "soul music." Starting with musicians such as Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye, it evolved
into rhythm and blues (R&B) and funk with the help of James Brown. Rhythm and blues is still very popular in
modern music today, R&B hits topping the charts. Rhythm and blues evolved into the hip-hop culture that is
popular today.
Over the last 10 years popular culture has taken Western youth by storm. It came mainly out of the inncer
city, with early prominent rappers coming out of the "ghetto". This "gangsta rap" evolved into the more popular rap, especially
in the 21st century. Today, rappers are often seen at the top of the charts, and it's obvious they have a huge influence on not
only the music, but the general way of life of Western society.

4a) 1. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
2. The National - Boxer

4b) 1. Pixies - Doolittle
2. De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising
3. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
4. Nirvana - Bleach
5. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

5) I don't have a HUGE problem with pitchfork's ratings - mainly, it's the reviews they give. They're laden with pretension
and general elitism a site like that doesn't need. One of the most unjust ratings, coupled with huge pretension, however, is
their review of CocoRosie - The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn. It's not only an outrageous score, but it's also a perfect
example of Pitchfork's elitism. 2.3 is an outrageous score for one of my favorite free folk albums of the year - the album was actually
quite good, at least deserving of an 8. Lines like "Werewolf" starts with a male voice describing a dream of being a werewolf, before Bianca proudly declares supposed shock'n'awe lines like "I suck dick" beside such trite juxtapositions as "stains on my sheets and stains on my soul" and lousy music writer words like "coruscate."
are hilarious because he's railing against the use of overly complicated words, a staple of any pitchfork review. To me, it seems like the reviewer (Marc Hogan)
is jaded against CocoRosie. I don't really care if he doesn't like CocoRosie as people, it shouldn't affect how he reviews the music. As
an aspiring journalist myself, I think it's disgusting to see such a predisposed and overall inaccurate review like this.

6) I'm not sure if Morrissey would be the most wise decision to bring to a desert island; I don't need to add more depression
in addition to the inevitable depression of isolation. Nevertheless, I would chose to bring Morrissey's music simply because
I enjoy it the most. The Smiths' The Queen is Dead is one of my favorite albums ever, and I think it's really haunting and soulful.
The Smiths, overall, are one of those bands who I think have such an aura about them, and Morrissey's vocals are a big part of that.
I just don't find Moby or Momus to be as entertaining to listen to as Morrissey, especially in his work with the Smiths. And I'm sure I'd
be pretty miserable to be stranded on a desert island, and misery loves company. Morrissey seems like the perfect guy to be miserable with,
as he's the archetype of depression.

3.) The influence of African American influence on Western popular music can be traced back to the days of slavery. Ragtime was on the first African American genres of music. Ragtime was one the building blocks for the genre of jazz, one of the most recognized African American genres. Jazz transformed American popular music. Jazz lead the way for other genres such as blues, R&B and rock'n'roll. Towards the end of the 20th century, African American influence on popular music switched from primarily jazz to other genres. Some of these other genres include disco, R&B, hip-hop and rap. Hip-hop culture generally dominates the US market today.

4a.) Nightmare of You - Bang EP

Moving Mountains - Pneuma
Say Anything - In the Defense of the Genre
Living With Lions - Dude Manor EP

4b.) Operation Ivy - Hectic EP
Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me
Sonic Youth - Sister
U2 - Joshua Tree
Anthrax - Among the Living

5.) "Something to Write Home About" by The Get Up Kid's was given a 2.0. It may be because of my sentimental value of the album, but either way, I think the rating is unjustified. I believe it would deserve atleast a 8/10. They try to argue that the album follows the same formula. One could listen to "Valentine" and "I'm A Loner Dottie, A Rebel" and disagree completely with that statement.

6.) I'm not a huge fan of either Moby or Momus, so I guess I would go with Morrissey. That is of course if Morrissey's music includes The Smiths and not just his solo work. I never really got into Morrissey's solo work. Moby would be the second choice just because I haven't really listened to Momus. The Smiths were an very important band in my life at one point. With albums like "The Queen is Dead" and "Meat is Murder", I could maintain a level of peace on an deserted island.

2a) Ratio is a way to display how much you seed out in comparison to how much you take. The more you seed or upload, the higher your ratio will be, and the more you download the further it goes down. Example: If you download 250MB and seed out 500MB, you should have a ratio of 2.0 since you've seeded out twice as much as you've downloaded.
2b)I believe it was 4.3 something, with me uploading near 40GB and only downloading 8 or 9.

3) What?

4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?

5) I don't read Pitchfork ratings on anything mainly because I don't care what a website or magazine has to say about an album - period. I've found so many great CDs against the wishes of internet critics and paid opinion writers. I've figured just ignoring sites like Pitchfork and listening to music for myself is probably the best way to handle situations. Who can tell me what I like better than myself, and why would I waste my time arguing with a critic? I've got better things to do - better people to listen to.

You know what, these questions are trite. If I choose to be a "music snob" I'll do so without having to answer to some unseen body by answering questions on how I think Africa has influence music. I know it's true; I just don't see what the point is in answering a lot of questions that go nowhere to people I'm never going to meet. So either shoot me an invite - Mad_Dawg_2✧✧✧@ya✧✧✧.c✧✧ - or don't. I really don't care. If I'm persistant enough, I'll find entrance to this site elsewhere. Until said time, I hope your high school popularity contest runs just like a well-oiled machine should. All I'm saying was I seeded a lot with OiNK, and I'd love to seed more with Libble and be part of the community again.

I don't have time for bullshit questions though.

b)my oink ratio at closing was 1.2

c) African American culture has had a great impact on especially mainstream music since the early 90's. Mainly with the incorporation of rap, hip hop, and r&b. you can now find remnants of all these forms of music in every genre today, from country, to heavy metal. and especially in mainstream pop music.

4a) Agnostic Front - Warriors, Madball - Infiltrate the System, Sick Of It All - Death To Tyrants Jedi Mind Tricks - Servants in Heaven Kings In Hell, Furious Styles - Life Lessons
4b) Pantera - Cowboys From Hell, Madball - Hold It Down, Hatebreed - Perseverance, Infected Mushroom - CLassical Mushroom, Alice In Chains - Dirt

5) The Doors - Perception rating - 6.5
This was a compilation of all the doors best songs on all their best discs. How could this get a rating anywhere near this low? these albums seperately would gain ratings of at least 8.0. i think this disc deserved much more attention.

6) Morrisey. Moby just wouldnt have the right rythmn for a deserted island. morrisey always delivers a very smoothe calming rythmn which would be a perfect mood for a deserted island. i am not firmiliar with momus so not much reason to bring his music.

I'm just saying what my opinion on music, what I look like, and why I think African culture has inspired recent artists should even come into play when it comes to me seeding and sharing. I had to go to work before that and was very stressed out, but I still don't see why I have to reapply to a council with detailed essays explaining who I'd pick - Morrissey, Moby, or Momus. I'm the only person who thinks these questions are nonsense? I'm the only person with any sense?

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers:
Flogging Molly – Alive Behind The Green Door – FLAC (log)
They Might Be Giants – Then – FLAC (log)
Various Artists – Rushmore Soundtrack – V0
2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.
A ratio is a way to track a user’s contribution to a site. There are two factors to a ratio, the amount of data uploaded, and the amount of data downloaded. A ratio is calculated by dividing the amount uploaded by the amount downloaded. For example if a user has uploaded 160 GB, and downloaded 30 GB his ratio would be 5.33.
2b) If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)
My ratio at the time of closing was 5.8.
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).
African American culture has a long influence on Western Popular music. The most notable influence began in the 1950s with the advent of Rock and Roll, and escalated with the rise in popularity of Elvis Presley. Elvis was heavily influenced by the blues sound, and mixed “white” music and “black” music. Elvis’ popularity continued to rise in the 1960s, as did the influence of African American music. The 1960s also saw the rise of Motown, which began as a record label owned by an African American releasing music created by African Americans. Artists such as the Supremes, found crossover success and were embraced by American pop culture. Many bands similar to the Supremes also found success and influence. This is really just the beginning; the most recent influence is in the form of hip hop. Hip hop began on the streets of New York in the 1970s. A prime example of its influence and acceptance by Western popular music is the rap category in the grammy awards.

4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?
1) Modest Mouse – We were dead before the ship even sank
2) The Shins – Wincing the night Away
3) Lily Allen – Alright, Still
4) Minus the Bear - Planet of Ice
5) Fountains of Wayne – Traffic and Weather

4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?
1) Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Rust Never Sleeps
2) The Specials – The Specials
3) Bob Marley and The Wailers – Survival
4) Van Halen – Van Halen II
5) The Who - Quadrophenia
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).
The most unjust pitchfork numerical rating was the official release of Fiona Apple’s Exrtraordinary Machine. A release of the album produced by John Brion was leaked onto the internet, many thought this was a great release, the record company disagreed, and changes were made. The John Brion release received a rating of 7.8 whereas the official release received a 6.2. I believe this to be the perfect example of pitchfork rating an album based on factors outside of the realm of the music itself. At the time it was sort of cool to dislike the official release. I listened to both versions, and personally thought the official was just as good as, if not better than the leaked version. This is just one of many examples of situations just like this.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).
I would have to choose Morrissey. His music has always been consistently high quality. The smiths are one of my favorite bands from the 80s. His lyrics, while sometimes depressing, can be quite witty, and entertaining. Plus, his social commentary is spot on: “America Is Not The World”. Moby’s music is tolerable, but I think I would go insane after a while, because it would all sound the same after a while. I’m not sure who Momus is, and while I enjoy discovering new music, I would not want it for a desert island.

2a) A ratio shows the amount of uploaded content versus the amount of downloaded content a user has contributed to a tracker. This is helpful in determining the worth of a user to a specific community. It is generally in the best interest of everyone involved to keep a ratio of 2.0 or above, as this means that you are sharing twice as much as you receive.

2b) I was not a member of OiNK, but am currently a member of Demonoid with a current share ratio of 1.66.

3) Percussion is part of the religion for many tribes in Africa, thus making it part of their culture. Everything they do has a rhythm. So, even though they probably came to America with no instruments, the rhythm was a part of who they were, and it bled into everyday American life. Compare the works of these composers to that of 19th Century composers like Brahms, Beethoven and Berlioz and I am inclined to think that you will agree that percussion came unto its own in the 1900's with a new respectability. The influence on popular music, however, is more obvious. Simply compare the music of Steven Foster to the music of Eminem. African influences also helped break down segregation barriers, as music appeals to all races, ages, and genders. Music has a healing power and helps unite different groups of the world.

4a) Elliott Smith - New Moon
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
Band Of Horses - Cease To Begin
Ween - La Cucaracha

4b) Pink Floyd - The Wall
AC/DC - Back In Black
David Bowie - Scary Monsters
Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Get Happy
Joy Division - Closer

5) I look to pitchfork for reviews about albums I am undecided on getting. One review in particular stands out as not being fair to the album. They gave Face To Face's covers album "Standards and Practices" a 2.5. I wonder if I do not agree with this rating simply because I am a Face To Face fan, but I believe that the band wanted to compile a tribute to some songs that they felt were influential to them. They were not trying to break new ground here, just give some of their favorites a "Face To Face flavor".

6) This is a tough one to answer, though I would have to go with Moby. I like Morrissey more, but a lot of his songs sounds very much alike. With moby, I would be getting something different with every song, and that would be a good thing if I were stranded with nothing but his music. There would be the song I could go to when I'm in different moods, as well as songs that could bring me out of certain moods.

2a) Ratio is the amount of data you have downloaded vs. the amount of data you have uploaded. Therefore, to have an even ratio, one must seed the torrents they download in order to upload at least the same amount of data they downloaded. However, it is a good idea to keep seeding all the time to get your ratio greater than 1, as that will give you enough buffer to keep your ratio from dipping below even whenever you decide to download something. Plus, the more seeders the merrier, as we all know.

2b)1.7ish

3) The sounds of African American culture are echoed in a lot of popular music today. The syncopated beats of jazz weighed heavily on the development of pop music. Blues is the father of rock. Its structures and harmonies are the basis for many rock and roll songs. Reggae remains a popular genre, and it continues to influence genres such as dubstep and grime. Also a prominent genre, R&B, or rhythm and blues, developed from gospel, blues, and jazz. Hip-hop developed from R&B, disco, and funk influences, and it has exploded in popularity. Declamatory vocals and call and response lyrics hearken back to African American spirituals.

4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?

5. The Smiths - Strangeways, Here We Come

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).
The rating of 9.0 for Scott Walker's The Drift baffles me. While Pitchfork is great for introducing the masses to new music, the rating they gave this album is Pitchfork at its pretentious best. I will agree that The Drift is an interesting piece of art, but it is not music that I would ever want to listen to. Scott Walker wails and wails amid a flurry of unsettling melodies and sounds. It is the creepiest fucking thing I have ever heard.

6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).
I am not a fan of Morrissey, nor Moby, so I researched this Momus character. And despite what others have said on here, I like him a lot. It's the sort of "sounds like it was recorded in my bedroom" synth-pop that I love. And his dabbling in French and Japanese? Those are the two languages that I've studied, and I've always thought it was a weird combination. But he marries the two beautifully in his songs. Interesting! And weird! I enjoy him thoroughly. Boredoms - Super Roots 9
the bonus disc from the latest Spoon album
Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil

2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.
A ratio is... um... a ratio (ooh... circular!) of how much you have downloaded from other users vs. how much they have downloaded from you. A ratio is a long-term, ongoing project. A ratio of around 2 means you're a nice person and you're online a lot.

2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)
around 2 -- 1.9 something something

3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).
Jazz, blues, rock and roll, hip hop, house, R&B, soul, Ray Charles -- hell, I don't know. There are many perfectly good writers who could go on about the topic much longer than me, often their own embarrassment. The topic is too large to summarize, and the music is too influential to even get a clear read on anymore. The culture and music that African Americans pioneered have become an inextricable part of the culture and music of the world at large. I would rather not try to summarize something like that -- at least, not this week.

5. Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).
I'm not too keen on that grey zone between seven and eight. I don't know if it's unjust, but it's the least useful to me. There seem to be as many great, favorite albums that fall into this rating range as there are albums I listen to twice and forget about. For practical purposes (do I want this record?), a rating of five or six is not a mediocre rating, it's a bad one. Seven to eight is the true mushy middle. It often feels like a cop-out rating (unless you think all ratings are cop-outs, and they kind of are). It says, "Yeah, this is good, you might like it, sure whatever, but next time ask somebody who cares."

6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).
Morrissey. In a situation like that, I'd prefer to have someone arch and amusing around. Arch, amusing, and able to write a catchy rockabilly tune about the depths of his hate, well, that's bonus. I wouldn't be able to deal with Moby past about 1994 and -- whoops! Too late. And I'm not familiar enough with Momus's music to have formed any opinion. Too risky for a desert island.

2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.
A ratio, which, despite popular opinion, does not rhyme with patio, is a representation of the quantifiable difference between two sets of data. While it is popular on websites as a simple representation of the difference between a user's upload and download, it actually has many more uses in real life. For example, when someone is said to be acting "rational," they are actually thinking about smart things to do with often involve numbers, whereas an "irrational" person is just thinking about colors or love or some other unquantifiable thing. Ratio also does not rhyme with "kappa," a legendary Japanese monster.

2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)
It was just under point-5... I didn't use it as much as I should have, sadly, because I only used it for things I couldn't find elsewhere-- and when something was that unpopular, it took weeks just to seed them to that point-5 mark. It WOULD have been higher, too, because I was about to start ripping my dad's weird vinyl folk records about entirely forgotten political causes (Ding Dong Dollar-- the BEST anti-Polaris record ever made! Err...)

3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).
It all started in the era of slavery, when fat white children no longer needed to actually do their own chores because someone did it for them. At first, this seemed fantastic, as all humans tend to try to get the most out of life for the least effort made. However, the daily routine of chores is good for the mind, and without it, ennui can seep in. The joy in white music slowly leaked out as all the honkies got more dead-eyed and disappointed with their empty lives of leisure. While slaves were set free, this attitude was never shook by white America, and the melancholy of never knowing a day of hard work truly took its toll. The explosion of office culture, where thousands of these whiteys were packed into closed quarters to stare at spreadsheets and make meetings, while black people cruelly prevented them from taking more rewarding, lower-paying blue-collar jobs in their urban areas. The levels of bummer-ness in white culture exploded into American popular culture over the fifty years following, taking various forms such as Old Sad Bastard Country Tunes, Grunge, Emo, Goth, and Reggaeton. Without the significant effect that African American culture had upon the youth of America, we would have been robbed of these incredibly relevant and timeless genres of music-- and for that, I thank them. I thank the entirety of the culture in a blanketlike fashion.

4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?
patrick wolf- magic position, black lips- good bad not evil, the field- blah blah sublime, ulrich schnauss- goodbye, god i can't think of a fifth... liars s/t?

4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?
Prince - Purple Rain
Black Flag - Slip It In
Bruce - Born in the USA
Spinal Tap - This Is Spinal Tap
a-ha - Take On Me single

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).
0.0 is the most unjust because it implies that there is nothing good coming out of a given record. First of all, at worst, you have a beautiful, shiny frisbee. You could also use it as a signal to airplanes in the event of a crash or something. You can use it as a prank-- secretly replace your mom's favourite Pet Benatar record with it. Those three things alone make any record worth AT LEAST 8.7 by Pitchfork standards.

6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).
Momus, I haven't heard much of his stuff and besides, I am probably not going to listen to music on this desert island. I don't want to be distracted as I try to find a way off, and I don't want to be distracted from making up my own songs when I finally give up.

7) BONUS REQUIREMENT: Please post a picture of yourself. (HINT: do this.)

1) Silversun Pickups-Carnavas, Bootsy's Rubber Band-Live in Oklahoma 1976,Johnny Marr and the Healers-Boomslang
2a) A ratio is the relationship between the amount a user has uploaded over how much they have downloaded. Having a low ratio brings the rest of the torrent community down, so users are usually required to uphold a good ratio (usually above 1.00).
2b) I was a power user on OiNK (rip) and had a ratio of 1.37
3) When African Americans were forced into slavery, they sang soul and the blues. These a capellas were mostly spiritual and had a huge influence on the black church, consequently affecting African American culture. After slavery was abolished, African Americans continued their music which was integrated into the civil rights movement. Ragtime performers, jazz artists, and blues artists, such as Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, and Robert Johnson, not only fueled the civil rights movement; they also were a major starting point for rock and roll. Bo Diddley, Chuck Barry, and Little Richard influenced Elvis Presley who in turn made rock and roll mainstream. They also influenced the Beatles, the greatest band in the history of the world. These artists made reggae and funk possible in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Rap also stemmed from the free form lyrics of the earlier artists. So basically, African Americans made western music possible.
4a) Justice-Cross, Kanye West-Graduation, Infected Mushroom-Vicious Delicious, Brother Ali-The Undisputed Truth, Radiohead-In Rainbows
4b) Pixies-Doolittle, Beastie Boys-Paul's Boutique, Dream Theater-When Dream and Day Unite, The Red Hot Chili Peppers-Mothers Milk, UB40-Labour of Love II
5) The most unjust pitchfork rating is definitely their rating of the Dandy Warhols-Odditorium or Warlords of Mars (a score of 1.2). Okay, so this album did not have any memorable singles (like We Used to Be Friends), but that shouldn't matter. It is a great album overall, the song Down Like Disco itself should boost the rating to at least a 6. The song "Easy" has all the classic Dandy sounds and includes a newer, orchestral sound. It's not a breakout album, but it is awesome nonetheless and the rating should be revised to at lease a 7/10.
6) Morrissey is the single greatest singer in the world. His voice, his lyrics, his stage presence, his ego, his persona are exactly what a musician should be like. He sets the standards for all new singers. His solo work is (almost) as good as The Smiths, and the only reason it isn't better is because Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke are not in it. I'm very glad this question is up here because I am very passionate about the Smiths (I have almost every CD and several vinyls) and consider them the greatest band besides the Beatles. Morrissey never gets boring, he only gets better and if I am ever stuck on an island, I would be fine as long as I have my Morrissey albums.

2a) The amount uploaded divided by the amount downloaded. Generally the threshold for a good ratio is 1.00. This is attained by uploading more files (both of your own torrents and others) than downloaded.
2b)I remember it was about 1.54.
3) Most important, I think, is the African-American origin of rock music. Beginning in the early fifties, luminaries such as Ike Turner essentially performed musical alchemy on the stew of the time to create a distinct, simple form, endlessly combinable and remarkably accessible. Culled from other Western forms of music, also largely invented by African-Americans (blues, jazz, etc.), rock, within ten years of its inception had claimed primacy as the most popular and relevant form of music being produced. Interestingly, unlike jazz and blues, wherein the most important music was always being made by African-Americans, rock was soon appropriated by whites, who gravitated towards the fact that soul was not necessarily needed to create it, unlike with the former genres. Thus, onto others, such as R&B, soul (which coexisted with rock for many years during the heyday of independent radio), and most recently, hip-hop. This genre has proved most interesting and volatile. Experiencing an unprecedented rise in popularity throughout the nineties and early '00s, it revealed an inclination in the music listening public towards an even further distillation of musical form than rock. However, this form has levelled off in popularity as of late, producing a new question in Western music - what will come next?
4a) Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Panda Bear - Person Pitch, Akron/Family - Love Is Simple, M.I.A. - Kala, Beirut - The Flying Club Cup
4b) The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs, The Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come, The Dukes of Stratosphear - Chips From The Chocolate Fireball, New Order - Substance, Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription
5) The 2.7 given Anathallo's "Floating World". For a band that encapsulates everything that Pitchfork seems to love, it seemed almost on principle that the rating was so low. That notwithstanding, the review even was generally positive, giving rise to the question as to whether the numerical rating had anything to do with anything but a statement of personal dislike towards the band. The music itself, an enticing mixture of polyrhythms, orchestral horns, and hooky melodies, is Pitchfork fodder, and has an essential well made quality that even with a subjective dislike would not warrant less than a 5.0. Obviously, then, it is not about the music and thus a worthless rating.
6) Moby. I like Morrissey best, but I imagine that his moping about would get old quickly. Moby may not be the best artist in the world, but I imagine that his music would be fine background for island living. His blues samples seem to be a bit more genuinely sad than Morrissey's fictive emoting, and I think a stranding would not be as overwrought an experience as unrequited love. Momus can be interesting but is even more pretentious of a twat than Morrissey, and for the rest of my life I would rather have pretty good music that I don't intensely like than an occasionally great artist that is usually annoying. Further, I think Moby has enough sonic variety to keep me interesting, and plus he's a fan of Public Image Ltd. Though if The Smiths counted with Morrissey the scales might tilt in his favor.......

1) I'm not sure if we were supposed to have made the torrents or not so I'll mix it up.
Aceyalone and RJD2 - Magnificent City
Modest Mouse - Birds vs Worms
The NoTwist - Neon Golden

2a) A ratio is a value of uploaded (contributed) material to downloaded material. It represents how much you are giving back to the community on file sharing sites.
2b) My ratio was a 3. something I had about 400 gb uploaded and 140 downloaded.

3)
African American culture has influenced Western popular music from many angles. Most notably now is the hip hop culture's fusion with Western popular music. Pop music in the Western culture has expanded from softer "cute" or "honest" songs to the point where hip hop is just as much, if not more prevalent in today's pop music. In fact, sometimes when popular artists do collaborations, it becomes a complete homogenization of the two. Most true rock bands are now known as indie music. This shows just how far the focus of Western popular music has shifted. I do not feel it is better or worse, but it is what it is. I do have to say though, I am always a fan of a sick beat!

4a) cmon man thats hard! alright
LCD Soundsystem - The Sound of Silver
Busdriver - RoadKillOvercoat
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury

4b)
The NoTwist - Neon Golden
Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Sound Tribe Sector 9 - Artifact
Green Day - Dookie

5)While I put both LCD Soundsystem and The NoTwist on my lists at number one, there is a big difference between best album of the year and best album since I was born. Pitchfork gave these albums both a 9.2. The NoTwist deserve it fully. Not only did they make deep, catchy (sick) beats, but had thought provoking lyrics and a theme that went throughout the whole album. One can tell by listening striaght through that the songs make a clear but natural transition from begining to end. LCD Soundsystem has some rediculously sick songs on their new album. The introspective "All My Friends" and "Someone Great" are awesome tracks, and who can't get a huge smile of familiarity when they hear "Time to Get Away". But some tracks just don't hit me as being as good and the flow of the cd seems too calculated and cold, which is why I listen to the songs I like as singles. "New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down" seems like a very forced ending to me. So ya, while I like both albums, I feel the same rating was unjust and Neon Golden should be raised or Sound of Silver should be lowered. Thank you.

6) Alright so Moby I would just make fun of all the time. While that is all good fun, I would probably get sick of it fast, so Moby is out. Morrissey wouldn't be bad to be on an island with but I would get bored of him too pretty fast (not as fast as Moby though). As for Momus, hell yes I would pick him I like how he has not stuck to one project all of his life. Seems like he would be the most interesting for the longest amount of time. He would have the best conversations. I mean, c'mon, he made an album about animals and sex. He's ready for island living!

1) The Bees-Octopus, Joy Division-Live in Amsterdam, Dyke & The Blazer-We Got More Soul.
2a)Your ratio is basically the amount you have uploaded divided by the amount you downloaded.
2b)Thanks to a crashed hard disk my ratio plummeted from power user to roughly 0.6 at the time of Oink going down.

3) From the early 20th century African American culture has always, and continues to influence Western popular culture. From the early blues of Elmore James and the later B.B. King, the West always looked to the States for the new sounds coming across. Without the blues and R&B tracks of the 50's, there would be no Rolling Stones, there would be no Led Zeppelin, there would be no Beatles.

As the sixties came and went with the biggest ever witnessed explosion in musical culture, Western Europe looked to Black America yet again as the single most influential artist (IMHO) of all time reinvented black ryhthyms to create FUNK! One single man through the medium of his band of musicians managed to put more soul and feeling onto a record than anybody had previously conceived possible.

It was these records that formed the basis of the next musical revolution in Black America as hip-hop was born. As artists began to 'rap' over the beats sampled from James Brown, evryone in Western Europe began to look to the States again after their own revolution of Punk was on its final ebb. Although hip-hop has eveolved into various forms such as R&B, we still await the next true Black American revolution whatever that form shall take.

4a) Octopus - The Bees, Heliocentrics - Out There, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - 100 Days/100 Nights, The Aliens - Astronomy for Dogs, Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare

4b) Innervisions - Stevie Wonder, Solid Air - John Martyn, Just Outside Town - Mandrill, River - Terry Reid, Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd.

5a) I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to pardon my ignorance on that one as I have never actually heard of Pitchfork before. I tend not to read (or trust) many reviews of music unless they are recommendations from friends or Piccadilly Records. I much prefer their weekly approach of letting you actually listen to some of the songs before you part with hard earned cash.

6) Its going to have to be Morrissey on that one simply for being the catalyst of turning me onto 'good' music instead of being force fed chart music. The Queen Is Dead was the first REAL album I ever fell in love with and can still hammer it endlessly now. In fact, Morrissey would be pretty perfect for those days when you just got sick of all that nice weather and just fancied getting a bit happier.

I wouldn't dream of listening to Moby whether I was stuck in the house or on an island, in fact I would probably make a swim for it given the choice.

As to Momus, again I am going to have to plead ignorance on this one for never actually knowing of his existence. Now that I do know and have done a little digging about, I'm quite intrigued. What I could do with is finding a kind friend that has some of his work so that they may allow me to hear it too :)

3) African American culture has ruined western culture and Popular music. Now that they have taken over, It is all about killing and street cred when it shouldn't be like that. you should not be popular because of how many people that you have killed (Young Buck), How many times that you have been shot (50 cent), how many women that you've had sex with (Eazy-E) how much weed that you smoke (Afro man), how man people that you piss off (eminem) or how much money that you have (lil' wayne). It should be about how good you are. It should be about the music that you create. It should take time to make, and not just be some senseless babble that you write on a piece of paper that isn't even true. Although some of the songs are good, a select few by a very, very small amount of artists, it is not good music. It is just catchy beats with funny/creative puns and plays on words. African American Culture and popularity has ruined music.

The Album is not only not bad, it is actually good. I liked it a lot, and though that it was a solid Album. Pitchfork is known for giving unjust ratings especially to indie rock/punk bands, but this is just ridiculous.

3) The Western sound began as early as Dvorak's lecture during the turn to the 20th century and his introduction of his "American" string quartet as his definition of a purely "American" sound, picked up over the years following by influential composers including Gershwin and Copeland. During the introduction of the jazz era durign the 1910's and '20's, African American rhythms were applied to this "American" sound as ensemble music including basic brass and string instruments, vocals, and percussion. These ensemble pieces came with a timbre/sound of it's own that can also partially be attributed to the often poor conditions of their instruments/ad hoc augmentations (i.e. plungers for trombone mutes). Over the course of the 20th century, the rise of Beatles "pop" in the 50's and "rock" in the 60's and 70's redefine what we consider western "popular" music today. African american rhythms were combined to create what would become "funk" in the 70's and "hip-hop" in the 80's and 90's. Today, the influence of african timbres and rhythms is undeniable. Hip hop is heard in every major dance club that features western popular music. As well, with the genre-crossing nature of popular music today, the african american musical influence can be seen everywhere from Justin Timberlake's production team (aka "Timbaland") to NIN's opening acts.

Iron & Wine
The Shepherd's Dog

B/c I loathe Iron & Wine. Wtf nothing by these guys should get over a 4.0, their sound is OBNOXIOUS. I take it as a personal insult to today's bands to put these guys up there, bands who make an effort to create undulating melodies with harmonies that haunt you and make you fall in love with music all over again. From what I've heard by these guys, and I feel that their sound is contrived, cutesy and elementary. But w/e matter of opinion right?

6. Morrisey. You thought going home alone from the club YET AGAIN sucked. Alone in the middle of nowhere, vulnerability is high. Who better, then, except for him which understands misery the best? (save trent reznor but you didn't mention him sooo) I don't think i'd want to be too aware of just how fucked I was on that island. Morrisey can sing me a lullaby any day and put me right to bed. My ativan could have crashed with the plane and still I'd be totally set. However, if the question were not "whose music" but rather "with whom," I'd say Moby. He's mad chill.

3)i'd rather be honest and say i know very little about this subject rather than just hoof an essay off google. i'm sorry if this ruins my application but as i'm not looking at other people's entries i dont want to risk 8 sentences of writing virtually identical to, i imagine, a lot of other enties.3.4.5.6.7.8.

4a)
raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely,
The Whip - X Marks Destination,
Foals - Antidotes,
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend,
Crystal Castles - Thrash Thrash Thrash.

4b) 1989(had to check the dates to be honest)
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses,
New Order - Technique,
Soundgarden - Louder Than Love,
Bob Dylan - Oh Mercy,
Cyndi Lauper - A Night To Remember (obviously).

5) again. i'm no authority to say, because i don't like em. soz.

6) Morrissey, because he spits everywhere and i would find that mildly amusing for a few minutes.

7) BONUS REQUIREMENT: http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p111/Reece1989/DSC00550.jpg note the rushes t-shirt, leeds festival band *still wearing :)* and jsuk that is cake-mix with a load of skunk in for good measure.
