Ok I love Electrik Red as the next man, but I'm surprised that SWV have not gotten that much love on this website. They were the perfect synthesis between En Vogue and TLC. I just listened to their song "Release Some Tension" featuring Foxy Brown and Coko sounds hot as hell with the upright bass playing beside her.
Also have to point out "Use Your Heart" with Coko's and Taj's lush soulful voice against a pre-weird Neptune beat.

they were three sistas with voices iirc

don't know who either of them is but calling weak 'trashy' is weird, i think the shanice-ey innocence makes it, and the chorus vocals are super gospel, we agree it is v. v. beautiful

I think the poster was referring to Coko's nails which were very long.

Yeah the remix is classic, but I saw the original on VH1 soul and I think it's better:
Maybe because I've heard the Human Nature one toooo many times. But the remix did sort of predict the mash up thing would hit big in the 00s.

the bam jam extended jeep mix of 'weak' is one of the greatest records ever made.
the uk back to black mix of 'right here' is a surprisingly hardy alternative to the overplayed original, especially if you like upright bass and the toto bit replucked on guitar.
agree that 'use your heart' is wonderful. "real loooove - purified".

I was listening to their last album, "Release Some Tension" and remembered that they performed on the Monique Show this year:
I also remember reading an article on Vibe about 90s singers, and that Kanye yelled to the audience that Coko was one of the best singers of all time and that we (i.e. the youngings who love Beyonce) weren't appreciating her.
― lilsoulbrother, Thursday, 19 August 2010 05:07 (2 years ago) Permalink
Oh ok. I stand corrected, Kanye West was telling that to Coko's son that she was an icon.

their new album is really getting under my skin. it's a consciously retro affair, i'm constantly picking up sonic and lyrical '90s references, but it doesn't feel like a nostalgia fest - reminds me of the kandi album in the way it covers emotional issues from a grown-woman perspective, that same bittersweet undercurrent that comes from having the assumption that you finally had it figured out overthrown

coko's voice is kinda reminiscent of fantasia in places!

Yeah the new album is really good. It's really smart about the way its contemporarizes '90s sounds, and finds a smart mix between modern and retro w/o feeling desperate or obvious. And the songs have real weight to them.

So what is SWV's best album? Is there a consensus choice?

This thread is based on a false premise. No one has ever forgotten.
