The Telescopes. Everyone laughs when I say this, but it is still true.

Actually, thinking about the question a bit more, maybe not them- they've been consistently good, but not exactly prolific. So the answer is... I don't know.

The second side of "Low" is terrific! Plus, sucking ass is pretty underrated.

My list (which no one else is going to agree with) would be Prince, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Severed Heads, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, The Prodigy, Orbital, and Tool.

Ahem.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sorry, no one but Ned. Except I didn't list Smashing Pumpkins (although I considered them) or Sparks (because I still haven't gotten around to listening to them). I want to list Pet Shop Boys, but I still dislike _Introspective_ and I'm really not familiar with _Nightlife_ or _Bilingual_. Their remixes (the unfortunate "I Want A Dog" remix on _Introspective_ aside) are brilliant, though.

For quantity and quality:

Richard Thompson.

Neil Young.(Although points need to be removed for some of that 80's business.)

..and the epitome of "quantity" -> The Fall (mostly quality.)

That's right, there's something we violently disagree over. What is it you don't like about "Left To My Own Devices" again?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What is it you don't like about "Left To My Own Devices" again?

The strings are tacky without having a point (a minor issue) and the verses and the chorus don't go together (a much more major issue). You've got this excellent minor groove set up in the verses and, just as it gets to the climax, it transforms into an insipid major-key singalong. It's hate-inducing. Add to this the deeply- inferior "I Want A Dog" remix, the unilaterally painful "Always On My Mind" (although the "In My House" segue is brilliant), the utterly loathsome "Domino Dancing" (whose only redeeming feature is that it's the A-side to "Don Juan"), and the most limpid version of "It's Alright" ever (see the "How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously" single for a much better version) and already more than half the album is sub-par.

Dan Perry, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ah, but you leave "I'm Not Scared" out of it, so you like it. Say it, SAY IT.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Of course I like "I'm Not Scared"! That's a great song. It's just too bad it's on such an icky album. ;)

Dan Perry, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ah well, one day you will see the light. In fact, seeing as I have all them reissues, I HAVE A PLAN. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Fie on you. Owning _Alternative_ makes most of the reissues non- essential, anyway; all the extra tracks I really wanted from those eras are on it (_Bilingual_ excepted, and that's the main reason I'm considering getting that one).

Dan Perry, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ah, but have you heard all the remixes? NO YOU HAVE NOT.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ahem, Dan. I agree with four of the groups on your list. Bilingual is worth getting. Definitely took a while to get used to, but worth it. I also am not fond of Introspective. The songs on that album are too long!

Vinnie, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The songs on that album are too long!

Too many notes, Mozart!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Exactly. :)

If you have a horrible song and decide to make it nine minutes long instead of three...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

...then that's where your heartaches begin. Er.

I think (?) there have been a lot of good melodies written throughout the years, especially for hymns/musical settings of psalms/etc, so I would have to say that the person who has written the greatest quantity of good music is: god
