It's two track packs and ten cars, so yeah, if you bought a new copy and it didn't have the download card, might be worth tracking down (though obviously there's plenty of content in the game already). This is something Microsoft is doing to downgrade the appeal of buying used copies as it's a one time use code, so if one were to buy the game used, you get slightly less content. Sort of a drag.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 30 October 2009 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Hmm, yeah. Turns out the cars I'm missing are:

’65 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA
’64 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage
’81 BMW M1
’60 Chevrolet Corvette
’69 Dodge Charger
’57 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa
’80 Fiat 131 Abarth
’67 Lamborghini Miura P400
’71 Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-R
’65 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe

Which is a bit annoying, yeah, cos the vintage models are the ones I'm looking forward to most (would LOVE LOVE LOVE it if they'd included a Model T Ford). Should be able to get a code from the store though.

JimD, Friday, 30 October 2009 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

it was in GT4! but you had to complete the hardest challenge to unlock it... i forget what it was, a 7 min lap on the n-ring with some suckass car iirc

i'm fairly certain all limited/exclusive/vip content will be available over xbl marketplace

they took me a fuck of a lot of work this morning - I think I rewound that course more than all other courses combined, mind you once I did I got in top 26% - my best on any course.

I worked out the whole season thing though, after abandoning new york before, I went back and did some other races - the lotus race round Amalfi was a blinder, overtook the esprit on the very last corner to win, cue much shouting.

updates!

there has been a new patch, the inside hand on the steering wheel now DROPS DOWN TO SHIFT, small but crucial detail.

feuerdog has updated his tuning calculator for december! thankig u my good man.

the online community for this game is perhaps more persnickety and assholey than even MW2? i kept getting kick votes against me upon joining a lobby! like jeezis lemme at least race like a noob first...

goole, Sunday, 29 November 2009 20:34 (fourteen years ago) link

The online in this game has been a real disappointment and the reason I haven't been playing the game. I've seen people vote kicked for winning races, losing races, for being too low of a rank or too high of one & for no reason at all. I don't know who came up with this idea, but it is horrible.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:18 (fourteen years ago) link

are ppl kickable in MW2? i thought so, maybe not. it seems funny that this nice bright clean racing game is 1000x more aggro than the world's most crowded violence simulator, doesn't it?

the online shd be more arcadey. the lobby intermissions are interminable. i'd love to do the factory-spec races online instead of dealing w/ some asshole's ugly-ass blown out rx8

goole, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:33 (fourteen years ago) link

You can't kick people out of CoD.

I don't understand why they don't have a "ready up" between races, so there wasn't that minute and a half wait (plus all the loading between races).

Weirdly though, after complaining about the online, I went back to it today and had a great time racing in F class, which they've finally added in. Overall, some pretty clean racing and no vote kicks at all. Maybe I just got lucky?

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 4 December 2009 03:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I really enjoyed how realistically they portrayed Road Atlanta having been there for the Petit Le Mans recently.

you don't mess with the Lohan (CaptainLorax), Friday, 4 December 2009 03:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I've changed a few things about my approach to this game and I'm enjoying it more and more. First, I gave up on the cockpit view and have switched to the hood cam. Suddenly it feels a lot less restrictive and it even seems like there's more of a sense of speed that way. It's also easier to judge where other cars are in relation to you, since hood cam gives you a larger field of view, though it's still hard when you're side to side. Second, I've turned on the braking line - I just don't play the game enough to memorize each track and its variations and sometimes the curves are very hard to judge. Having the braking line on just makes it that much less stressful when taking a turn (though I still screw up now and then). I feel like trying to use the suggested braking line has really helped me be more competitive online and therefor made those races more fun.

Speaking of online, the addition of F class has really turned around my feelings there. I've been racing in F class a ton and love the feel. I've even won some races! I didn't realize what a big part avoiding other people's mistakes plays in getting a good result. It seems really important to stay out of the pack, and also if somebody is faster than you, to give them enough room to pass sometimes (rather than have them crash into you). Even in F class I have seen an unfortunate amount of accidents. Sometimes I think this is on purpose, sometimes I think it's because it's hard for people to perceive the cars to their sides accurately, sometimes I think it's just because people are driving out of control too fast and too stupid. On the bright side, people racing F class seem more laid back and there really has been much less "vote kick" nonsense than I saw in other modes earlier on. In 50-75 races I've only actually seen one person successfully vote kicked and only once have I come up for a vote (after a race I won cleanly!), though that vote failed.

A couple things I'd like to see added to the game would be a way to see the tuning and upgrades the people you're racing against have done to their cars. Sometimes when you're racing somebody with a car rated the same as yours, but they're considerably faster, you wish you could figure out how to tune your car to do better (but fuck if I want to spend a ton of time figuring that out). I've also noticed there doesn't seem to be a penalty for cutting the track... by nature and training I try never to illegally cut corners and the like, but I think I've noticed other people doing it online and posting lap times a couple seconds better than myself. Jeez, I think even the arcade racer Need For Speed: Shift has a three to five second penalty if you cut. It would also force people to race with more control, I think.

In single player season play I've reached the R3 championships. Trying to drive those cars is tough, but I feel like I'm figuring it out and that's very satisfying. The sense of speed with those things is crazy. Hopefully I'll be able to get okay enough at it to take those beasts online someday. One of my problem areas is launching those things... I just can't seem to get a smooth launch. Either I'm pressing the gas too much and skid out, or not enough and crawl off the starting line (which often causes me to panic and floor it, which causes me to skid out - sigh). Any advice on launching would be most appreciated.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 16:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i've never figured out launch! it's different for each car, obv, and the TCS doesn't even help until after the initial skid. you just have to feel it out i guess, and the computer will always do it a little better

i did the R3 with the ferrari FXX (insane) which wasn't that hard, but the FXX stock series is unreal, so hard. i've been racing a lot of series as if they were stock races -- checking the opposition and then buying the best car in the field and racing w/o mods. makes it a fun challenge. and cheap!

i have not raced online in a long time, tho, i shd do some F races, i have some of those cars that i really like.

goole, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:06 (fourteen years ago) link

and i've been getting into this to avoid DOG RAPIST pwnj in MW2...

goole, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I also haven't been upgrading, just buying a better car when I need it, except for online, where everybody upgrades their car to the highest spec for that class, so you really can't race competitively without upgrading to top spec (which is a slight bummer). I do wish there was an online mode where you could only race race stock / non-tuned cars, where everybody was given the same car, but a different random car for each race.

yes!! i wd be all over stock, same-car racing, but damn if motherfuckers can't even agree on a track half the time, just imagine... turn10 would have to pick a handful of cars at each class, and it'd get a little weird in upper classes where you can tune the stock car a little bit. ah why daydream, it'll never happen.

speaking of stock races, the lighter-wheels loophole has been closed, i'm sure you've noticed :(

bracken free ditch (Ste), Thursday, 8 April 2010 07:21 (fourteen years ago) link

While Dirt 2 and NFS:S are both pretty fun games, I think they both fall a little short in significant areas compared to Forza 3. Dirt 2 just doesn't have enough tracks or variety (and the x-games presentation can get crazy annoying). NFS: Shift has a very weird handling model that seems more broken the further you progress into the game. I honestly do feel the later levels (Tier 4 and on) of the game with the higher powered cars are basically unplayable due to all the bounce. The graphics in both those games are better than in Forza though and both have better online systems. Forza does beat both in its handling model and car and track variety - especially the handling model, which I think is probably the most important thing. Anyhow, glad for all three - too bad they all came out so close together last year as I think it diluted the impact of all of them.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 8 April 2010 14:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Another thing I was thinking about Forza 3, the driving is very good, but the racing often isn't. The game has a hard time finding that sweet spot. I often seem to be in an overpowered car that basically wins the race after the first lap even if I started at the back of the pack. That makes the game into kind of a leveling up grind to unlock new cars, but there's so many cars, unlocking new ones doesn't feel that important, since you really just need a good one or two for each class - not four hundred.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 8 April 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

a game like this should have some kind of auto-leveling function where the opposition is tuned to be very close to whatever car you show up in. the only races that were consistently fun and challenging in this were the factory stock events

goole, Thursday, 8 April 2010 16:19 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i totally agree about Shift faster cars becoming a little unplayable, and i think i had the same issue with GRID.

This is why whenever i load up shift now i still race around in the lower ranked cars. it's still a blast.

soz, i wasn't really comparing dirt and motorstorm to forza3. i was just surprised that i got enjoyment out of them after initially being disappointed with both of them.

i am still enjoying this game.

my recommendations for maximum fun are: to not fuck with the auto-tune-up feature, but figure out how to do it yourself (not that hard really), do the "rivals" bit after each race, which is more of a skill challenge thing and squeezes a little more life out of each car/track

i really wish games like this had a "call race" feature -- the fun of the 1p game is all the permutations & restrictions. why not allow the player to set those (country, drive type, class, track, etc) and the AI puts in a field that fits? couldn't be that hard to do.

i am playing forza 4. it's ok. man, i was INto this shit 4 years ago.

it's an odd mish-mash of the highly technical (tuning options that you basically need an 2nd party app/spreadsheet to use capably) and the panderingly arcadey (each race is like 2 laps and there's no place qualifying lap). so you spend 45 mins setting up your expensive precision machine and then it's 6mins of bumper cars against the AI.

the 'career mode' just puts the events in some kind of order with some interstitial world map graphics and a plummy british announcer saying what you're doing.

i haven't done any online racing yet but i have noticed several anime-chick themed paintjobs for sale in the marketplace

oh and if you want to hear a different british guy wax on about cars or about how liberals and environmentalists are ruining the good things in life, jeremy clarkson is in it too.
