yeah i like that style too! but in a less 'dressy'/formal fabric perhaps, so it's obv less wedding-like

i am wearing my seersucker dress today :) dresses are fun

yeah, this one was very "I am going to a wedding." I just love that pleating technique - anyone know if there is a name for it? I saw a shirt with this style in H&M last year but it was on a mannequin and all attempts to find it on a rack were fruitless (and the H&M employees I have encountered are generally useless, so I didn't ask.) I have been coveting this pleated fabric since!

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

v cute!

ffm, i saw this woman yesterday with your color hair and a black dress with this canary yellow cardigan draped on her shoulders and thought of you and that you should rock this look if you are not already!

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:59 (fifteen years ago) link

oh gosh, that does sound cute! I want to own cardigans, but never find/buy cardigans. A few years ago, my Grandma bought me a few yellow shirts because she wanted to see me in more yellow - unfortunately, they were too baggy and shapeless! Fail, Grandma :(

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i LOVE cardigans

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i finally tried on this black cowlneck dress i've been eyeing at banana republic and it looks great except for the fact that it has the STUPIDEST FUCKING SLEEVES
http://www.bananarepublic.com/Asset_Archive/BRWeb/Assets/Outfit/124/OUT12465/outfit/br-otf-out12465oviv01.jpg

why? they are so fucking dumb and leave an awkward gap between the armpit and sideboob, as illustrated above. i reallllllly want a cowlneck belted dress too :(

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

ok that pic came out too small:

better illustration of armpit weirdness

from the front it is such a perfect office dress!

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 17:57 (fifteen years ago) link

you know when a sleeve is making a models arms look chunky - AVOID

sunny successor, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:06 (fifteen years ago) link

it made my arms look geriatric. serious ugh

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link

that is weird - because the dress is so cute! :/

rrrobyn, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i know! if it goes on sale (which i assume it will because the sleeves are so wacky) i might get it to wear with a jacket over it.

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i also love the purple tights/shoes combo

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

could you wear it with, like, a tight black t-shirt (long-sleeved or short-sleeved) on underneath or wld that be weird

rrrobyn, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:28 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah that might work! but there's no way i'm buying it on non-sale

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

oh god I've seen that cut before.. I don't understand why they do that!

Finefinemusic, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Unfortunate, because I like the look of cap sleeves. But that IS the widest part of the arm.

Laurel, Friday, 22 August 2008 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link

On the other hand, sometimes I think you just gotta suck it up and realize no one is really looking at your upper arms.

My birthday is in a few months and I spent a lot on my boyfriend, so he told me to look for stuff online (shopping is terrible in Toronto except H&M, Gap, etc) and I am obsessed with this site now:

A lot of rockabilly sites online carry clothes from stopstaringclothing.com, so that's a good place to look for the greatest variety.

Other nice 50s links I've found are reddressshoppe.com and www.unique-vintage.com. (The second one isn't actually vintage, it's all modern dresses that could be fit into various decades. Useful, if what you really need is a swing dress in perfect condition in a modern size 10.)

Laurel, Saturday, 23 August 2008 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Also mybabyjo.com but I think they carry mostly Stop Staring dresses too.

Let me say that I had mixed reviews of my last order from Stop Staring: The dress was strongly constructed but very basic -- no lining, no interfacing, no nice finishing details. It looked like a nicer dress online than it actually was, esp for $120. I returned it.

Laurel, Saturday, 23 August 2008 22:32 (fifteen years ago) link

oooh is unique-vintage the one you were telling me about a while ago? i kept meaning to ask you for the name!

tehresa, Saturday, 23 August 2008 22:46 (fifteen years ago) link

oooh thanks for the tips Laurel!

Finefinemusic, Sunday, 24 August 2008 19:56 (fifteen years ago) link

from unique-vintage, this is gorgeous:

i think i like them because they allow me to do something when i feel insecure.

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 02:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Looks like purple is trend for this season (along with "turtle"")-- I read it in amny.

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 02:51 (fifteen years ago) link

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 02:54 (fifteen years ago) link

ooh that dress is so cute! wanting! not sure that i'm into purple for me, maybe if it were more plum. or a nice blue-red!

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 02:58 (fifteen years ago) link

tehresa i bet that will go on sale in a couple weeks

bell_labs, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 14:13 (fifteen years ago) link

i know. i am going to stalk their website!

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 14:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I am so happy about the purple because it suits my skin & hair perfectly. Yay purple!

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 15:07 (fifteen years ago) link

me too!

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 15:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i want purple shoes to wear with purple tights.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 15:12 (fifteen years ago) link

ooooh. seriously some days i get a little ridiculous with the purple. like yesterday i started to roll my eyes at myself bc i was wearing a purple sweater, carrying my purple purse, and also my purple shopping/grocery bag. it was a little too much.

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 15:14 (fifteen years ago) link

and i bought some purple tights at uniqlo!

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 15:15 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, you have to be careful! I get over-matchy by accident sometimes.

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 15:31 (fifteen years ago) link

OK I need advice. I need to find a dress for my brother's wedding in SF in November. It is a Friday evening wedding in a Russian Orthodox church followed by dinner reception at I think the SF University Club. Not black tie, like dressy cocktail attire.

Does there exist such a dress that I could purchase for said marital occassion, but could also wear (with different accessories or whatevs) for work? Because if such a dress existed, I would feel OK about dropping bigger dough.

For example, see upthread OH HELLO PHILLIP LIM DRESS THAT IS DELECTABLE AND ALSO $650. Could that be worn to the wedding *and* to work? Because then *maybe* I could justify that kind of cash.

Anyhow your thoughts and examples would be most appreciated--just keep me in mind when browsing dresses!

quincie, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh and said dress would have to be notblack and notnavy. But I'm open to all other colors!

quincie, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:48 (fifteen years ago) link

i think you could do that if the dress looks more worky if a jacket or sweater can be put over it? i would aim to find a dress based on the party more than based on being work-appropriate. but then, i care not for work.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i'd wear that dress to work, for sure, but it really depends on your office environment. i'm a huge fan of dressing up without resorting to boring business attire.

lauren, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

I love this one so much--is it weddingable or not cocktail-y enough or?

http://www.lagarconne.com/data/item/2306/zoom/fan%20dress%20front%20kate%20w.jpg

quincie, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

i actually think it is perfect for a wedding. maybe too fancy for work?

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

mmmm i feel like it could cross over, depending on the accesories & makeup.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

great for a dressy-cocktail-y wedding. like i said, i'd wear it to work but that's just me.

lauren, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmmm it would help if the material was not shiny, but it is hard to tell from pic. Anyhow something along these lines that could go both ways would be ace, and I would totally up my spending limit for something I would get more than one or two wears out of.

My office is a business dress downtown DC place and I think I would not have a problem pulling it off for work if done correctly--maybe black tights and oxford pumps and a jacket or cardigan or something.

quincie, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

honestly i don't think it would work w/jacket or cardigan, because of the detail @ shoulder and waist. would be a shame to cover it up. it's a gorgeous dress. i think it'd be hard to wear to work. but surely you might have other dress up occasion to wear it?

daria-g, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 23:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Sadly (or perhaps fortunately?) I rarely have a dress-up functions to attend. But I am finding hope there is probably a dress out there--if not this one--that can do double-duty and thereby justify the expenditures required to get something really beautifully designed and made, in a really good fabric.

quincie, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:38 (fifteen years ago) link

btw I miss you guys

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:10 (fifteen years ago) link

quince, that dress comes in a lot of other colors and fabrics -- that was just the one I liked the best (plus some of the other fabrics are more expensive). I think the shoulder detail is, yeah, more of the problem with putting something over it, but maybe something UNDER it for cooler weather, a micro-stretch long-sleeved top in black or a rich color to give it sleeves? Matched to tights? Or one of the angular not-cardigans that are around this fall, something that doesn't close in front and just drapes? Ah well.

I hope you DO get it, because god knows I can't! Could def wear to work in NYC, but then people are crazy here.
