The round-trip Balboa Island to Huntington Beach walk sounds terrific. Thanks!

there are supposed to be some nice trails around Pacific Palisades

This is my favorite one: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=paseo+miramar,+los+angeles,+ca&btnG=Search&ll=34.049068,-118.556664&spn=0.007876,0.021629&t=h

It's 5 miles round trip, but it's an intense 5 miles. Take Sunsent from the PCH for a 1/5 mile or so and turn left onto Paseo Miramar. The trail head is where the road ends at the top. Parking on the street should be easy enough. Amazing views in every direction.

Temescal Canyon park in the pacific palisades (the part north of where Temescal Canyon road ends on Sunset) used to be a great place to hike, but it's become overcrowded recently.

Will Rogers State Park might be a good option, though.

(Temescal and the Palisades Highlands hills are the two number one spots for Palisadians to get stoned, FWIW...)

I was going to recommend Will Rogers State Park, but I've never been and wondered how easy it is to get up there

Mishe Mokwa is probably my favorite LA area hike.

Will Rogers State Park within a mile of Dead Man's Curve on Sunset Blvd.. on the outer fringe of the Palisades entering the Mandeville Canyon area (ANOTHER great place to hike, and you're practically overlooking the hills SW of the San Fernando Valley, I-405 and Sepulveda Blvd. and all that.)

I went on Inspiration Point Loop and Backbone Trail at Will Rogers State Park. There were families and couples on the way to Inspiration Point. On Backbone Trail, I saw two hikers, three joggers, one bird in the bush, one bird on the trail, one lizard, one sunset, zero mountain lions, and zero druggies. The views were terrific. Thanks, ILX!
