Wow, I can't imagine how mammoth the vinyl version would be if every track is extended. Does it end up being over 100 minutes? I know the vinyl also has an extra track not on the cd.

(villalobos contributing a mix to the fabric series, sometime in the next year, apparently)

Hi Omar!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Is the vinyl version floating around online in mp3 format anywhere? The only thing I've seen floating around is the cd version with the last track cut off. I thought the cd was a great improvement, but if the vinyl is amazing.... I'd copy it off myself, but I'm not sure my needle is up to the task right now.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Hi Tracer :)...(I'm here all the time, really.)

Fabric mix sure is good news, hope it has loads of "space children from outer space singing" type of tracks on it.

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

'stereobox' isn't on the cd. not every track is extended, just 'hierklon' and possibly 'true to myself' (haven't heard the cd vers of that to confirm, just the fucked up mp3)

a, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:26 (nineteen years ago) link

That fucked up mp3 has caused great anguish.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I know, "True to Myself" is like one of the best tracks! You need to hear it in it's full glory. Perhaps the ripper has cruelly screwed it up in order for you to buy the cd.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:05 (nineteen years ago) link

"True To Myself" is amazing, far and away my favourite track on this. Actually I may be in the minority in thinking the album gets better as it goes along.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd agree that the last few tracks are probably the most accessible songs on the album.

Somewhat boringly I tend to like Villalobos at his most accessible - but I also love "True To Myself" because it reminds me of Isolee's "I Owe You".

"dirtyirishhooer - 24-Aug-03 07:17 AM
I saw him in the amazing La Terrazza in Barcelona when he supported Sven Vaeth. He was out the back knocking out minimal house while astoundingly out of his box. He kept on knocking the needle off the record and laughing his head off. Stumbling 'round the place, disappearing for a few minutes every now and then and generally enjoying himself.

Having said that, his set was fantastic. Which is more than I can say for Sven - the big gurning lunactic."

Just got Villolobos new double 12inch on Cadenza, "Achso". And after being so underwhelmed by most of his recent stuff, I really start liking his music again. Beautiful tracks, especially "Sieso". Wonderful winter melancholia. Four tracks, all at least 12 minutes long, every track as trippy as a Villalobos track can be, but much more focused than everything else he did this year.

And the the whole concept is so great: "Ichso", "Duso", "Erso", "Sieso" - that's "I'mlike", "You'relike", "He'slike", "She'slike" in English. That's what weird communication at 6am feelslike.

Achso is great. The layering and hazy semi-structure of everything is really engrossing. Sieso has that kernal popping drum programming ala Flutter, only way more engrossing due to its consistancy.

Alexander (Alexander Buckiewicz-Smith), Friday, 13 January 2006 21:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I've only listened to Achso at the shop but it sounded really good, I imagine I would like it more than either of his two albums. He's discovered honest to god grooves again! But not abandoned the ketamine...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 January 2006 23:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I like Achso better than The Au Harem but probably not better than Alcachofa ...

Renard (Renard), Saturday, 14 January 2006 06:02 (eighteen years ago) link

"seiso" shows the man has discovered the ebow as well.

Beta (abeta), Saturday, 14 January 2006 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm tempted to say Achso is his best release yet (at least best "album") -doesn't have the immediacy of Alcachofa, but I also like the utter lack of pop-ness. It's basically a far morme realized The Au Harem.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 14 January 2006 18:04 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah it's like The Au Harem stripped away almost everything .... now he let the door open a crack for the light to leak back in (but only a little bit)

Renard (Renard), Saturday, 14 January 2006 18:24 (eighteen years ago) link

i just listened briefly last nite, but alcochofa sounds like someone with sensory damage made it -some totally bizarre sounds and percussive sounds that don't really follow the rules but you can still sorta identify with it. is there something wrong with villalobos? i like it though - but its very very bizarre.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 14 January 2006 23:30 (eighteen years ago) link

while i dig it (the gatefold penumbras make for gooey gazing), i haven't been as lost in it as i was with even the recent "Chromosul"/ "Fadutron" single.

Beta (abeta), Saturday, 14 January 2006 23:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Susan, have you listened to anything else? Villalobos was probably doing his most conventional song stuff on that album.

mike h. (mike h.), Sunday, 15 January 2006 00:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm sure he makes a lot of money, but plenty of people who make a lot of money wouldn't do well if their main source of income was cut off for 12+ months. (n.b. I have no insights into his financial situation, maybe he has millions in the bank.)

davey, Monday, 21 June 2021 14:14 (two years ago) link

For map's benefit, I pulled together a shortlist of villalobos faves which I realised contains a lot of his pre-Alcachofa material when he could be surprisingly straightforward and obvious - reflecting that my taste in his work mostly skews towards the more populist material. But yeah there's a lot of fun to be had in some of the earlier tunes like "H.E.I.K.E. (Ricardo Villalobos Mood Mix)", as well as from that early 00s period where he was starting to develop his mature sound but was still pretty banging (e.g. "Bredow", "Alsbalduin").

Anyway:

808 the Bassqueen
Sieso
Beck - Cellphone's Dead (Ricardo Villalobos Entlebuch Remix)
Que Belle Epoque 2006
Ichso
Alsbalduin
True to Myself
The Contempt (Last H of Porto Mix)
Richard Wolfsdorf - Buena Onda
Bredow
Rhythm & Sound – Let We Go (Villalobos Remix)
H.E.I.K.E. (Ricardo Villalobos Mood Mix)
Bakasecc
Fool's Garden (Black Conga)
Thomas Dolby - One of Our Submarines (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)
Ric Y Martin - Sini Est
Senor Coconut - Behind The Mask (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)
Fadutron
Nightmares on Wax - Back To Nature (Lobos On Wax House Mix)

man that shit is just so far out and sick. i love how he mixes together menacing and inviting textures.

his music just bursts with unique personality and it's such a thing of beauty when he makes the necessary effort, which strikes me as probably a difficult and time-consuming thing to accomplish.

of all the musicians that build a cult following around them ricky has to be one of the most deserving.

I own more releases by RV than anyone else, which I owe to coming of age as a dance music fan in the mid-00s, when it seemed like his infallible-minimal-auteur status was untouchable. Few artists have had a similar impact on me, yet I’m amazed at how many things (including many just listed that I don’t know). Plague raves do bother me as does his decision to play one, since it’s not like he hasn’t politicized his choice of gigs before (for instance, he refused to play in the US during the Bush years) and the zanzibar one seemed particularly questionable.

Some favourites that haven’t been mentioned:

Miami
Frank Mueller Melodram
For Disco Only 2
Richard Wolfsdorf - Bosch (which desperately needs a repress)
Wispa, which is the latest thing of his I’ve really liked
His Tony Allen Remix
Tu Actitud
His remix off isolee - I owe you
fabric 36
Uli, Mein Ponyhof

etc etc

Definite cosign on "Miami" and in particular the "I Owe You" remix which I had intended to include in my list above. All the others that I know in that list are great too.

I don’t think he does 10+ Mins songs because of megalomania, it’s common to have this long tracks for other djs to use when mixing… and also: drugs, lots of them.

if only his stuff was available via an official bandcamp page.
other than the fabric release there is very little out there for non-vinyl folks.
hopefully at some point there will be a nice boxset released,
but i suspect the legality and multitude of labels involved will make such a treat impossible.

Taka Taka is fantastic. I like the Love Family Trax mix as well but Taka Taka is the better of the two.

I do kinda miss that era of impeccably curated commercially released mix cds - i think Taka Taka and Immer and The Button Down Mind Strikes Back and Friends were all released within about the same12 month window.

Also cheers Tracer for the public service.

the pre-Alcachofa corpus is such a treasure trove! there's an exhilarating moment half-way through "Damm3" where it mutates into this Phylypsian half-step skank, undergirded by an almost impossibly elastic bass structure ... the way in which he confounds the formal conventions of house music is always so impressive
