I only smoke weed when I need to
And I need to get some rest
I confess, I burnt a hole in the mattress
Yes, yes, it was me, I plead guilty
And on the count of three I pull back the duvet
Make my way to the refrigerator
One dry potato inside, no lie
Not even bread, jam
When the light above my head went bam!
I can't sleep, something's all over me
Greasy, insomnia please release me
And let me dream about making mad love on the heath
Tearing off tights with my teeth
But there's no relief
I'm wide awake in my kitchen
It's dark and I'm lonely
Oh, if I could only get some sleep
Creeky noises make my skin creep
I need to get some sleep
I can't get no sleep....

How do I learn to sleep on my back?

I had a similar problem in my early 20s. I would wake up with neck pain because of sleeping on my stomach, which I'd done all my life, so I resolved to learn to sleep on my back. The first few nights were difficult, since my mind was convinced this wasn't a position for sleep. I stayed awake hours longer than I normally would have, but my body started to overrule my mind sooner and sooner, and within a week, I was sleeping normally on my back.

Now, I sleep on my side, hugging my wife or a pillow, if she's sleeping on the couch (insomnia) or is hugging me. I find that this is the most "ergo" position for me: After years of sleeping on my back, I realized that this caused its own set of physical problems.

On the general issue of insomnia, I find that if I have a few drinks with dinner, I'll wake up between 2 and 4 and be unable to get back to sleep until about 6. When I don't drink at all, I sleep far better. One thing that does help me get back to sleep is a small snack of carbohydrates, like a piece of bread. It's probably just my own physiology, but that'll get me yawning in under 30 minutes.

libcrypt, Saturday, 23 June 2007 16:34 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, I need to try that (the carbohydrate thing) as I've been awake for well over an hour and it's 5 am here. (fell asleep in front of the telly at about 11 o'clock last night, after suddenly coming over all tired about five minutes earlier, having been wide awake before that)

ailsa, Sunday, 24 June 2007 04:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Here we go again. Nothing lamer than going home early because I'm tired and then not being able to sleep.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 24 June 2007 04:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Insomnia for multiple nights in a row sucks, and that is what I have right now. I can't turn my head off, but at least I know that I am up worrying about things that will change. (i.e. papers that need to be written for school and the imploding personal life of a friend)

My usual insomnia tricks:
get out of bed for at least 15 minutes
take ibuprofen or similar
read something dreadfully boring (I suggest an organic chemistry text)
write down what is bothering me
apply lavender scented lotion (or just inhale something lavender scented if that is too girly)

Sara R-C, Sunday, 24 June 2007 04:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I have packed my lavender oil somewhere and I can't find it :-(

(I usually put some on a tissue and put it in my pillowcase)

I'm guessing farting around on the internet isn't really the way to go.

ailsa, Sunday, 24 June 2007 04:18 (sixteen years ago) link

i am going to eat some carbohydrates
maybe not b/c i can't sleep
maybe b/c they are good and they are there

rrrobyn, Sunday, 24 June 2007 04:30 (sixteen years ago) link

the only thing thats ever come close to working for me is

laying down in a completely dark room, listening to something like cocteau twins, with headphones, and concentrate on not moving at all... pretty much strangling the senses into submission

the sir weeze, Sunday, 24 June 2007 04:32 (sixteen years ago) link

i've been taking melatonin from time to time; it seems to help.

farting around on the internet is not a help, no

mookieproof, Sunday, 24 June 2007 04:39 (sixteen years ago) link

sometimes you just need to fart, though

You want need sleep, you need Miracle Pill That Stops You Feeling Tired!

Work all day. Party all night. Never sleep. Never care about sleep. It's fun to be an insomniac!

^^
(ps: get me some if you find them)

onimo, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:54 (sixteen years ago) link

i want me some of this shit. stet to thread!

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm on it right now! It's not much cop as an everyday crutch, but when I need to get up early with only a few hours sleep, it's chemical magic.

stet, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:07 (sixteen years ago) link

You can get prescribed Modafinil in the UK now? Can you get over prescribed nudge nudge say no more etc?

I thought about using dodgy overseas dealers but cowardice got the better of me.

My getting up early thing I mentioned on the other thread didn't last. I'm back to staying awake until 3am then dragging my tired arse into work late every day.

onimo, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:13 (sixteen years ago) link

dodgy overseas dealers here.

Hi lurkers! :-)

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:40 (sixteen years ago) link

side effects?
Slightly raised heart rate; bit of an elevated mood; if you're really tired it's bizarro-world time when you're very alert and hyper-aware of exactly how tired you are, yet have no sleep drive. Like knowing you're starving, and being aware of the presence of hunger, without actually being hungry or having any motivation to eat.

stet, Thursday, 19 July 2007 16:29 (sixteen years ago) link

whoa i totally don't remember posting to this thread in late june o_O

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 July 2007 16:34 (sixteen years ago) link

5am. still awake. have to be up and about by 10:30am to work a double shift, which will probably end around 11pm tonight. not feeling so good about this. stet, magic me over some of teh good shit.

ok, am dimming my computer screen, and listening to soothing sounds of sparklehorse, and lying down....

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

See to me dimming the screen means "this is starting to really hurt but I want to stay awake and look at it for another hour."

onimo, Thursday, 19 July 2007 23:46 (sixteen years ago) link

you wouldn't be far wrong there.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 23:47 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm not actually sleepy, yet i know i should sleep, but i don't try as hard as i could. it's some kind of mental thing.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 23:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Do you sleep better in the day?

stet, Friday, 20 July 2007 02:06 (sixteen years ago) link

no. on my days off, i still wake up after about five hours, but i try to stay in bed for ages, so that even though i'm not sleeping i'm still getting some kind of rest. i'll kinda doze off and on but not sleep properly. i definitely think it's some kind of mental thing that i need to sort out. the thing is, if i try to force myself to go to sleep at midnight, i lie there in the dark feeling more and more anxious.

Rubyredd, Friday, 20 July 2007 02:16 (sixteen years ago) link

That's what's good about melantonin -- you can't "think" through it like you can some sleeping pills, it just zonks you. But there's some outside fears that using it too much can fuck up your brain's production of it, so it's not really a daily thing either.

stet, Friday, 20 July 2007 02:21 (sixteen years ago) link

thanks, stet. i'm gonna try to find some today.

three weeks pass...

Two months now. Can't get to sleep, can't stay asleep, wake up early. Cannot get a single night of sleep unaided. This has never, ever happened to me before. I am completely fucking sick of it and REALLY REALLY close to breakdown point.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

What fucks me off most is that I'm ALWAYS tired at bedtime but cannot sleep. Heart goes into overdrive and stays there. I do not know what is causing it. I have tried changing and eliminating everything I can think of. I eat well. I exercise more than most people. I am not suiffering undue work or home stress. I just. cannot. sleep.
