Actually no.

Actually my guess is that the people that run this restaurant are actually from the south.

ACTUALLY TRY ONE SERCH FUNCTION

Hoboken vs. Jersey City FAJCP?

ACTUALLY CHAPEL HILL IS ABOUT AS "SOUTH" AS MEMPHIS IS NORTH

One search function was tried. One thread is mainly about Hoboken, the other about a long past FAP.

Bro-boken isn't bad for some things. It's a very pleasant town to walk around on a nice day, many good restaurants, but the bro factor makes it suck at night.

I live here. Great Indian food and markets on Newark Ave., Mulu Baltena (Ethiopian) and the new Vietnamese place both on Bergen Ave. are good, rent is cheap and my neighbors are nice. Other than that Dirty City is just that.

JC is not quite chock-full of good places to eat, but a couple of others I've found:

1) Lombardi's -- seems like sort of a best kept secret. AMAZING italian deli and gourmet pizza

2) Dosa Hut -- in the little India section, very tasty dosas, (as featured in The Voice)

3) Rasoi -- a good standard Indian restaurant

-- Hurting (Hurtingchie...), April 12th, 2005.

That asshole proprietor of Dosa Hut kicked me out last Sunday because - in his words - "you are taking too long to eat and I need your table". Mind you, I had my dosa all of five minutes and the place wasn't even full. I had been a steady customer of the place since they opened, but the fool decided to single me out. Never again. I left my food and walked.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 06:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Mulu Baltena (Ethiopian) and the new Vietnamese place both on Bergen Ave. are good,

Snap. I've never tried those places.

Madame Claude (French) and Marco and Pepe are both pretty good, but they're not cheap and everyone already knows about them. Ibby's Falafel is ok if you're looking to eat for 3-4 bucks. La Congajuita (Cuban) on Manilla is better than Hard Grove but kind of uneven.

That story about Dosa Hut is ridiculous.

So I guess the majority of you live in the Grove St. area? Lucky. I love Hamilton Park (that's what that little park surrounded by brownstones is called, right?) and wish I could afford to live down thereabouts.

Definitely.

Is the Vietnamese place over there better than the one on Newark Ave. more towards downtown? Cause that one was a little disappointing -- food was ok but everything was a bit sweet and bland.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I've never tried the Viet place on Newark, but this one is fairly delicious. Lemongrass dishes actually have lemongrass in them and spicy dishes are spicy.

The Ethiopian cafe I also mentioned is tiny but theirs is the best Ethiopian I've had yet. And hella spicy.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Lemongrass dishes actually have lemongrass in them and spicy dishes are spicy.

That is so key. The waiter at Wild Fusion (Thai) on Grove admitted to me that they don't actually use lemongrass.

I dig Ethiopian too -- Makeda in New Brunswick was pretty awesome, so I'll be impressed if it beats that.

Jay, anytime you want to try the soul food, give me a holler. The prices are moderate: 10-12 bucks gets you an entree, which is big and comes with two generous sides. Food is very good, especially for the price, atmosphere is very nice, and deserts are off the chain.

Yes, I have a rather unusual/unorthodox living situation and the rent is much cheaper than market for the area. The Grove area is ok but seems a little deader than it should be. Bars close too early (12pm in some parts).

I went to the Ethiopian place tonight with the gf -- sorry I didn't lget in touch with you, but it was a last minute decision. I'd definitely go again sometime. The food was not as good as Makeda in New Brunswick, but considering it's about half the price ...

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I have something to say. Marco & Pepe is wack. I've eaten there a couple of times, it was always ok but a little disappointing, and tonight was the corker.

My $10 burger was over-charred on the outside, and you idjuts even burned the bun! Maybe that's why it took so long -- you forgot it on the grill. Spinach was way too oily. Cake was dry and boring. Lavazza coffee is not worth $2. And that little cheese sample you passed out tasted like kraft parmesan. The steak and fish I've had have been mediocre. The mac and cheese and the chocolate torte are the only things I've ever been satisfied with. Way overpriced -- there are about 10,000 better meals to be had for the money in the area.

ps A friend of mine refers to the new coffee place across the street as "Marco & Pepe Lite" which is OTMFM.

As disappointing as Jersey City is in terms of music, nightlife, etc., the food situation has become really good.

Within walking distance of my place now I have very good Vietnamese, taqueria Mexican, Italian deli, and decent Greek, Cuban, and falafel/shawarma, all cheap, plus a couple of good coffee places, an excellent tea shop, and two mid to higher price-range places I like (Marco & Pepe, Madame Claude). One PATH stop away (Journal Square) there are a bunch of good Indian restaurants, both Northern and Southern, as well as the Egyptian fish place, and in the other direction (by the waterfront) there are a couple of very good, not-too-expensive sushi places. I don't really like the one thai place near me, but another one is about to open a few blocks from my apartment.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 10 June 2007 16:52 (sixteen years ago) link

The area from Grove Street to the water is getting more and hideous every day. I kind of assumed as more money poured into the area they'd at least build nicer buildings, but the whole thing just looks like a mid-level finance worker storage area (which I guess is what it is) - like I expect the buildings to be full of cryo-freeze compartments instead of actual dwellings.

JERSEY CITY (CN) - Parents say an Alcorr Transit bus driver showed hardcore pornography to 28 preschoolers on a field trip to the Land of Make Believe. Apparently it was inadvertent, but it continued "for several minutes" until the driver responded to "the screams and shouts of the parents."
The preschool, PRR Corp., says it hired Alcorr to take 28 children, ages 3 to 8, on a field trip. Apparently the bus driver watched the movie while the kids and parents were at the park, then left it on after the children returned for the ride home.
"As the bus was traveling, the children and adults were subjected to the graphic images and sound of said hardcore pornographic movie," according to the complaint in Hudson County Court. "The passengers were subjected to this for several minutes before the driver turned it off as a result of the screams and shouts of the parents.
"As a result of this incident, numerous parents removed their children from plaintiff's preschool, causing plaintiff a severe loss of income. Further, as a result of word of the incident spreading throughout the community, plaintiff suffered numerous cancellations in its enrollment and a great decrease in the number of applications for future enrollment, resulting in a severe loss of income."
Plaintiff is represented by Lonny Hirsch.
