i like that this time their strategy for making it seem like gucci is not away in jail is releasing one video a week instead of one mixtape a week

i think one of the problems with this new diplo tape (and diplo in general) is that although it contains tracks by artists who i don't hate (and who in some cases i actually like), it makes the mistake of assuming that because ppl like both these artists on a separate level, they will gel and fit together to produce a product equal to, or greater than the sum of their parts. but this never ever happens.

ianmaxwell, Monday, 11 January 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

but of course. lotsa people will love it.

Not bad, he's decent on it being a tough sell 'til it gives up its pleasures and what those pleasures are. would nitpick about

And with Gucci, there's also a sense of shared experience. People are listening to this guy; he's not just another voice in the internet echo chamber.

This idea smacks more of the rap writers echo chamber. "internet" rappers with 100,000 downloads are also a shared experience. Also no one i've read has done a really good job explaining why this merits a paragraph. this ties into considerations of matt's "old or new music" question that got bumped recently. also XXL or film columns publishing first week numbers, like who gives a fuck and why exactly? how important is it that the music become part of the pop culture, besides being easier to sell pieces on it?

He's found his audience by elevating ignorance to expertly absurdist art

gonna come out and call this flat out wrong, or at least not as true as saying like rapreviews did that he's built his buzz post-"So Icey" by killing guys and beating the case/beefing with jeezy.

Of course, the album came out when Gucci was back in prison and sold way fewer copies than expected.

it's dishonest to connect these.

Gucci's detractors took the opportunity to declare his regional stardom a grand illusion. Those detractors should [not detract but realize he's dope

a point nothing to do with the shared experience point these particular detractors are attempting to weaken, the one already he gave a graf to.

also think he rated the album about ten per cent too highly. that, like me, he doesn't dig "the run of mid-album R&B tracks" i think shows grading on a curve and what a low bar we have for the rap album format these days.

i always thought deej was of the anti-"so the joke is this guy's retarded, right?" brigade

ke$nan (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link

hes a gangster rapper of course hes promoting 'ignorance' at some level

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:12 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean his hit single is called 'wasted' -- i think ppl just make a whole bunch of assumptions about what 'ignorance' actually means.

i think the question of popularity is absolutely relevent to the discussion of an album, & a discussion about where a record's place is in the grand scheme of things

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:13 (fourteen years ago) link

gonna come out and call this flat out wrong, or at least not as true as saying like rapreviews did that he's built his buzz post-"So Icey" by killing guys and beating the case/beefing with jeezy.

thats bullshit, his beef w/ jeezy & the murder case were in what, '05?? & his buzz only really started growing in mid-late 07, only really seemed noticeable a year after that.

it's dishonest to connect these.

a point nothing to do with the shared experience point these particular detractors are attempting to weaken, the one already he gave a graf to.

this is the problem of living w/out regulated measurements of sales though, right? his detractors are wrong, gucci's music has resonated w/ huge numbers of rap fans.

also think he rated the album about ten per cent too highly. that, like me, he doesn't dig "the run of mid-album R&B tracks" i think shows grading on a curve and what a low bar we have for the rap album format these days.

if you read his blog he actually does like the R&B tracks aside from spotlight, he just doesnt like their sequencing & how it slows down the record in the middle.

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:18 (fourteen years ago) link

fucking brand nubian promoted 'ignorance' too, the problem is w/ ppl confusing style with substantive ideas -- gucci's style embraces 'uneducated' slang-y street dialect but that doesnt mean hes an ignorant person or that his ideas are any worse than lord jamars, which is kind of tom's point in bringing up 'worst enemy'

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:22 (fourteen years ago) link

of course i also think the idea that records are any more/less consistent now than they were back when is a total fallacy

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:27 (fourteen years ago) link

it's called "the best of the cold war mixtapes" but like half of it is from burrprint 3d and "photo shoot" is on it

i want more SBs, lots of SBs (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:29 (fourteen years ago) link

rap reviews get systematically lower scores on pitchfork compared to other genres. it's a brilliantly produced album by one of the most exciting rappers around, with some questionable pacing and a dogshit lead single. i am sure there are billion of non-rap albums with imperfect pacing and a couple dud tracks that have scored at least ten per-cent higher than 8.0. the album's a pleasure to listen to, i think that counts for a lot.

ENN-Bomb (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:46 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i just threw my personal opinion re rating in there as an aside to a nitpick, i wouldn't make too much out of a person's exact tally of their reaction unless there's some huge gulf.

zvookster, Monday, 11 January 2010 21:55 (fourteen years ago) link

not a lot wrong with what deej says in isolation, but not really responses to what i said.

zvookster, Monday, 11 January 2010 21:59 (fourteen years ago) link

lol..."free gucci mane. free boosie. keep lil wayne outta jail." also if anyone can tell me anything about the 25 different companies he shouts out at the end that would be nice

woulda liked to hear him flip the hook

i liked tom's review(s) a lot

total eclipse of the shart (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 January 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

except when he said on his blog that svrd isn't better than carter III

total eclipse of the shart (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 January 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

he said carter ii

een, Thursday, 14 January 2010 21:01 (fourteen years ago) link

word-- well i would agree with that but i think he means carter III anyway, cuz otherwise i don't understand the comparison at all.

total eclipse of the shart (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 January 2010 21:02 (fourteen years ago) link

well, in the pfork review he says it again

Like Wayne's Tha Carter II, it translates Gucci's mixtape triumphs into something more digestible and immediate.

this must be a mistake unless he's talking about the first dedication, but i mean obv the comparison would fit dedication 2 -> weezyana -> drought 3 -> carter III sessions -> carter III in terms of making wayne's mixtape triumphs more digestible and immediate

total eclipse of the shart (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 January 2010 21:04 (fourteen years ago) link

you right, iii makes way more sense wrt that sentence

een, Thursday, 14 January 2010 21:25 (fourteen years ago) link

it kind of seems like he's out to prove that he's listened to weezy albums before he was a phenomenon with white guys on the internet--i'm pretty sure he's spuriously referenced his "carter ii peak" in like every news item about lil wayne in the past 6 months.

een, Thursday, 14 January 2010 21:28 (fourteen years ago) link

well he was def one of the most vocal & visible voices when it came to 07/08 wayne

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 January 2010 21:50 (fourteen years ago) link

also here's a crazy thought maybe Tom actually does believe Carter 2 was his peak

some dude, Thursday, 14 January 2010 22:22 (fourteen years ago) link

i do too but if that's true then i don't think the analogy is really relevant-- i mean obviously wayne was putting out mixtapes before tha carter II but i don't think anyone at the time was viewing that album through the prism of his mixtapes (as opposed to tha carter or his younger cash money days) as everyone had no choice but to do w/ tha carter III or the state vs radric davis

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 January 2010 22:26 (fourteen years ago) link

i figured "tu casa, mi casa" was a bad sex jam so i put off listening to it but gucci's verse is sick!

J0rdan S., Saturday, 16 January 2010 07:13 (fourteen years ago) link

mi casa so full a rastas

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Saturday, 16 January 2010 07:15 (fourteen years ago) link

this song reminds me that a few days i was thinking about how "dey know" and "foolish" are two of the most improbable (near-)classic singles in recent memory considering how genuinely shitty shawty lo is as a rapper. easily my least favorite rapper who i still might be forced to listen to. does he have a song with a trey songz hook?
